The banner bearing a canton of her brother Scott Harlan Severson's arms was conceived as an expression of family allegiance and respect, acknowledging his position as head of the family while preserving her own armorial identity.

The banner of arms of Kimberly Louise Severson designed by her and emblazoned by me. In this interpretation of the banner of arms, the banner is shown mounted on a pole. The upper end of the pole has been ornamented with an element derived from the heraldic badge, namely Aslan's paw print. This is, however, purely an artistic and decorative feature and does not form part of the heraldic description, that is, the blazon.

Design rationale

Mathematician and astrophysicist from Harvard and Princeton Universities, as well as a classical musician, she represents a woman of the world—scientific and with diverse roots, who expresses her identity through a symbolic language of her own creation. Her design and execution are the result of an international team, in service of an equally international woman, and reflect a path of evolution toward which heraldry is advancing. The Kramer parrot (Psittacula krameri, Indian Ringneck) is shown in its natural colour. It is her favourite animal and at the same time evokes her Indian heritage. The red chrysanthemum, painted in a Japanese style, refers to her Japanese ancestry. The atom symbolises her education and professional career in the field of science. Blue, which dominates the whole, is her favourite colour.

[Avilés, J.; 1725a; pages 47 and 48] tells us about the chaussé that «se entiende cuando el Escudo está dividido en forma de Chevron ranversado», that is, inverted, «de modo, que llegue con su punta a lo bajo de la del Escudo, y las piezas, que le acompañan, hacen la acción de calzar, subiendo de lo bajo a lo alto; de cuya forma toma el nombre, suponiéndole siempre por campo el espacio, que hay entre las dos líneas de dichas piezas» and gives as an example Pomponne in Burgundy whose coat of arms is «de plata, calzado de gules» which is shown in [Avilés, J.; 1725a; ilustración 78].

In [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 68] the embrassé is explained, reminding us that the field is what remains inside the 2 charges, upper and lower, that accompany it. In the embrassé, the charges enter from the sinister, leaving their points on the dexter of the shield as shown in [Avilés, J.; 1725a; ilustración 150].

Opposite to this embrassé to the sinister, [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 69] calls the contre-embrassé simply as «embrazado a la diestra».

«Embrazado a la diestra» is how [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 69] names the contre-embrassé, since the two charges, one upper and one lower, enter from the dexter of the shield, leaving their points in the sinister. It must be kept in mind that what remains between both charges is the field.
