Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

The hurt represents what is known as the Good Raft, a symbol of the town and its people, it is a circular cistern of 40 meters in diameter of Roman origin, and the Maltese cross is a symbol of its connection since 1188 to the Royal Monastery of Sijena of Hospitaller nuns of the Order Malta.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Coat of arms of the Comunidad de Madrid emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the default number of points for the mullet is five unless otherwise specified. Therefore, if a blazon mentions a mullet without further detail, the artist must depict it with five points. Conversely, in Castilian heraldry, stars are conventionally represented with six points by default. When a five-pointed mullet appears in an English blazon, it is mandatory to specify the number of points in the Castilian version of the blazon, as in this case.

Design rationale

The castles derive from Castile, and the 7 mullets come from the bordure of the city of Madrid; they represent the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid on December 23, 1983. Regarding the symbolism of this coat of arms, José Manuel Huidobro told me: «Each star has five points representing the five provinces surrounding Madrid: Ávila, Segovia, Guadalajara, Cuenca, and Toledo. The castles embody the most characteristic symbol of Castile. Both neighboring communities, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León, display them in their coats of arms. The fact that they are paired symbolizes the Community of Madrid’s claim to serve as a link between the two Castiles». He includes the coat of arms of the Comunidad de Madrid in his book [Huidobro Moya, J. M.; 2024; page 214].

Coat of arms of Crepsi, military psychology, former Central Military Region, Kingdom of Spain, where I was stationed during my military service. These arms were designed by my lieutenant colonel and friend Miguel Angel Nuñez Amador, and in this image, they have been emblazoned by me. The Crepsi was a pioneer in its functions: a) the identification of soldiers at psychological risk, among tens of thousands of soldiers, using advanced information systems, including Artificial Intelligence (an area where I contributed during my service in 1989), and b) the evaluation and individualized attention of soldiers at risk through mobile units. The Crepsi has provided trained personnel and methods that are being used for the psychological care of troops deployed to conflict zones and for the psychological care of civilians in massive humanitarian disasters such as terrorist attacks or plane crashes with hundreds of affected people.

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Saint Edward Crown, the fundamental piece used in the anointing ceremony of British monarchs, was reconstructed in 1661 after the Restoration. This crown is distinguished by its four depressed or downward-curving arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. Like the Tudor, its arches, adorned with pearls, converge at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. Coat of arms of Alejandra Espeja Avieda designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and emblazoned by me. Blazoning specific, real-world objects in coats of arms should be avoided. Therefore, in the blazon I describe «four bell towers». However, in this case, for artistic reasons, to echo the elongated form of the four pallets Gules, and due to the origin of the bearer, I depict four bell towers inspired by those on the Nativity Façade of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família in Barcelona. Additionally, I initially blazoned the arrangement of the 4 bell towers as «in fess» ~ «en faja», as, from a heraldic perspective, this term accurately describes their horizontal alignment next to each other across the field. However, I observed that this term, far from clarifying the design, caused confusion among some viewers. The naturally vertical shape of a bell tower, its default position, is «palewise» ~ «puesta en palo», so using «in fess» ~ «en faja» led many to assume that I intended to lay the bell towers on their sides. Although the original description was heraldically correct, I decided to remove the mention of «in fess» ~ «en faja» for being unnecessary and clearly counterproductive. As the towers are «issuant from base» ~ «movientes de la punta», their placement in a horizontal row is sufficiently implied, thus avoiding misunderstandings and maintaining the clarity of the blazon. It is important to remember that «in fess» ~ «en faja» refers to how multiple elements are aligned with each other (in a horizontal row), while «palewise» ~ «puesto en palo» describes the individual orientation of an element (in a vertical position).

This design shows that the chevron is constructed with the side lines forming an angle where the tangent of half the angle is 56.3^o, arctan(3/2), its width is made one-fourth of the shield's overall width, and the position of the chevron's lower point (the apex) is governed by the shield's geometric center, resulting in a visually more open shape than the standard.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is inspired by the concept of the «lattice formed by the stars» described in the Books of Chilam Balam, pre-Columbian texts of the Yucatec Maya tradition that combine history, cosmology, religion, and astronomy. Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

The arms are traditionally associated with the Lobo family of Alvito and are documented in Castilian and Portuguese heraldic and genealogical sources. These arms were equally used by other members of the House of Alvito, such as Ruy Dias Lobo and his descendants. I have emblazoned this coat of arms at the request of Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim, as he counts the Lobo lineage of Alvito among his ancestors. It is not necessary to say the arrangement of the wolves which is in saltire, that is, 2, 1 and 2, since it is the default arrangement in heraldry for 5 equal charges.

Coat of arms of Her Excellency Ratu Muda Malka Bas Reuven emblazoned by me with a shape known as a vesica piscis, and with the blazon written in English and Castilian in a structured way to observe the parallelism between both forms. My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.

The coat of arms of the Marquis Prato di Arnesano, requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara and painted by me. Vair is a fur, and furs are repetitive combinations of a metal and a color. In the case of vair, the metal is Argent and the color is Azure. Because they simultaneously include both a metal and a color, furs are exempt from the rule of tincture, as they would inevitably violate it, either through their metal or color component. In this coat of arms, the pallets of vair lies on a field of metal Or, and it might be thought that the metal Argent in the vair breaks the rule. However, as mentioned, the rule of tincture does not apply to furs due to their dual nature.
