The vertical axis of symmetry has been extended above the chief and below the base, and has been divided into segments of 1/4 of the shield's height, «h» in the diagram that illustrates this article. At the ends of these segments, parallel lines have been drawn to the bend sinister diagonal of the shield. Since the shield has a 5x6 proportion, the angle of inclination of these diagonals is 50.2^o..

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 79], on the appropriate dimensions for outlining an indented shield, he explains that «encaxadas» or «emanchadas» refers to «the partitions of the shield, whose pieces fit into each other in the shape of thick and long triangles, which are regularly one-third of the length», that is, of the width of the shield for parted shields, «or of the height of the shield», that is, the height for fess shields, as in this example, «depending on the direction in which these figures are placed in the parted, fess, bend, and cut shields, etc. but being a Chief, they have half the base and the rest as point; and if it were a Fess, it is formed of alternating triangles, which fill it completely».

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 80], on which of the two components of an indented shield acts as the field and which as the piece, he clarifies that «the field of the partition is understood as the one occupying the upper part of the shield, with the lower part at the base considered the piece».

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 80], on how the blazon of an indented shield should be drafted, he establishes that «the number of whole and half triangles must be specified when there is more than one, and likewise, the direction in which the partitions are in the parted, fess, etc.», illustrating it with 2 examples that can also be seen in [Avilés, J.; 1725a; plate 8, illustrations 157 and 158].

Design ideas

The heraldic art often involves resolving design challenges while maintaining both aesthetic balance and adherence to tradition. The coat of arms illustrated here draws inspiration from the Dethick-Dethicke family arms of Derbyshire, though it features distinct differences. This design explores the placement of water-bougets, a medieval water vessel, in a 2+2 arrangement, with a fess vair.

One key consideration when arranging charges in heraldry is proportionality. In this case, the fess occupies 1/3 of the coat of arms's width and is positioned 1/3 of the height from the chief, rather than at the exact center, allowing the charges to balance harmoniously. The shape of the shield itself also plays a role: rounded shields can accommodate a 2+2 arrangement more comfortably than shields with a pointed base, which are better suited to 2+1 arrangements, this is de case of Dethick's arms.

Another challenge in heraldic design is asymmetry. To address the natural curves of the shield, the water-bougets may vary slightly in size or placement. This intentional asymmetry can help create a visually appealing composition that respects both tradition and the unique constraints of each design, because, heraldry is not only about rules but also about creativity.

Water-bouget

In German, they are called «Wasserschlauch» in English «water-bougets» or «oges», and in French «bouses» or «chantepleures».

There is no specific heraldic term for them in Castilian. Based on «chantepleures», one could use «cantimploras», which are metallic or at least rigid. On the other hand, «oges» could translate as «odres», as they are typically made of leather as in this case. Additionally, since «water-bouget» are designed as a pair to be carried by a donkey or other animal, I have decided to use «par de odres» to convey the idea of one on each side of the animal.

In English, when there is a single charge, that is, a pair of water vessels, it is written in singular as «water-bouget», as can be seen in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 551]. [Friar, S.; 1987; page 68] defines «bouget» as «...a stylized representation of a yoke supporting two leather waterbags».

There are several methods to draw a pointed coat of arms, for example, the method of [The Heraldry Society; 2013; page 7]. There are also several pointed coat of arms with the ratio 5/6 between its width b and its height h.

The previous illustation shows my method to draw a 5/6 pointed coat of arms. The center Cd of the dexter arc is 17h/36 = 17b/30 from the top of the shield and its radious is 13h/24 = 13b/20, or what is the same, its diameter is 13h/12 = 13b/10.

The position of the Cs of the sinister arc and its construction is symmetric to the dexter arc with respect to the vertical axis, as shown in the following illustration.

Regarding the flanched design, [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 92] writes: «it is said of a figure that divides the Shield from the side of the flanks, sometimes by means of half-ovals», such as those in the diagram that illustrates this article, «and other times by means of half-lozenges, which run from the angle of the Chief to the angle of the base on the same side, whence they take their beginning».

In [Avilés, J.; 1725a; figure 197] an example of a flanched shield is illustrated with the arms of Oschoven on the Rhine, where the space left between both flanches is 1/5 of the base of the shield and, therefore, the width of each flank is 2/5 of the base of the shield, being 2/5 + 1/5 + 2/5 equal to the full base.

The coat of arms of Gregorio Lanzagorta Llaguno, harbor of San Blas, and cigar maker in Nayarit, Mexico. This coat of arms was designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and painted by me in 3 steps: 1) outlined, 2) plain colors and metals, and 3) lights and shadows. The heraldic terms «gavilla» ~ «garb» in Castilian and English. Note that the English term «sheaf» also corresponds to the Castilian «gavilla». At first, I thought I remembered that in Castilian this sheaf of tobacco had the very specific name «tonga», and that is why I initially used «tonga de tabaco» ~ «tobacco sheaf». But I discovered that «tonga» is a more local than general term, [Real Academia Española; 2014] «Canarias y Cuba: Pila o porción de cosas apiladas en orden», so «tonga» is not as general as I believed, and therefore I moved on to use «gavilla de hojas de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco leaves», although this is somewhat long, and moreover the words «hojas» and «leaves» are redundant, since these sheaves are only made of leaves—just as wheat sheaves are always made of ears, so one does not say a sheaf of wheat ears. That is why I finally use for the blazon «gavilla de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco» in Castilian and English, respectively.

In Castile, a coat of arms quarterly does not necessarily signify inheritance. This schema illustrates two practices: a) Quarterings can represent the mother in the 1^st and 4^th quarters and the father in the 2^nd and 3^rd, highlighting the prominence given to the maternal line by placing it in the most visible quarters. b) Quarterings can also include personal symbols and concepts, like canting arms, for example, «Manuel» =«mano» + «ala» = «hand» + «wing», combined with ancestral arms. This flexibility reflects Castilian heraldic traditions, where arms are not strictly marshalled by inheritance. The inclusion of maternal arms in the 1^st and 4^th quarters highlights how Castilian heraldry often elevates maternal heritage, differing from some other heraldic traditions. The previous commentary emphasizes the creative freedom in Castile, where quartering could incorporate personal symbols or canting arms without the constraints of inheritance or dominium. This flexibility aligns with Castilian culture, allowing heraldry to reflect personal identity, not just dynastic ties. Notably, the arms of Infante Enrique's use of a cross flory demonstrates this creative freedom, showcasing the ability to innovate within heraldry even in royal contexts. The way to elaborate a label can be found in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 248] who writes that «it is made of a fillet, which is the ninth part of the latitude of the Chief with three points in the form of a Carpenter's wedge, or of badly formed triangles, which united to it without separation of lines, fall twice as much, as the fillet is wide, the two being placed at its ends, and one in its middle, its ordinary situation being in the middle of the length of the Chief itself, without reaching the edges of the Shield».

In [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 248 and 249] it is said that «the simple Label is always of three points», as is the case at hand, «but having 4, 5, or 6, which is the greatest number found, it is necessary to specify it», although in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 114] he seems to consider that the maximum is five as he writes «Points, it is said of three, four and up to five points of the Labels».

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

There are 2 rhombuses in heraldry: the lozenge and the fusil. I like to represent the lozenge, which is a less elongated rhombus than the fusil, as a square with its 2 diagonals placed one vertically and the other horizontally. Lozengy and fusilly consist of filling the entire space with lozenges, in the first case, or with fusils, in the second case, joined 4 by 4 at their corners.

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 25] writes «Fusils, Lozenges, and Mascles can be accolados, when they touch with their flanks; and to be so called, the entire Shield must not be filled with these figures, because in that case it would be called Fusilly, or Fuselado and Lozengy.».

In this case, two lozengy schemata of lozenges are presented with their 4 angles at 90^o, the first 5 wide by 6 high, which is exact because the angles are 90^o and it matches the 5x6 dimensions of the coat of arms and the second 6 wide by 7 high, which may be more suitable for shields that resemble the structure of per pale of three.

In [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1987] one can see written both «losange» with «g» and «losanje» with «j», although the occurrences of «losange» with «g» are more than double those of «losanje» with «j».

The coat of arms of the Marquis Prato di Arnesano, requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara and painted by me. When a field is charged with 3 pallets, it results in 7 vertical areas: 4 belong to the field, 1 on the dexter, 2 between the pallets, and 1 on the sinister, and 3 correspond to the pallets themselves. In most cases, and especially in the present one, it is ideal that these 7 areas be of equal width. This allows me to apply a fur pattern like vair using a 7 columns structure, with 7 little bells of vair in the chief, so that each pallet contains the same vair arrangement. In this case, for greater harmony, I have also arranged the vair in 7 rows, although this is not required. The figure illustrates this concept.

The coat of arms of Pesquera de Ebro, Burgos, Castile and Leon, designed and emblazoned by me by me in 9 steps. I have had the honor of participating in the project to create the coat of arms for Pesquera de Ebro. It has been a project carried out by the community in a dynamic and collaborative manner, facilitated through digital communication.

Design rationale

The inhabitants of Pesquera de Ebro form a very dynamic community and chose a series of elements to represent on their coat of arms, which, in order of importance, are the following: the elm tree, which stood in front of the church and served as a gathering point for the community; the three-arched bridge over the Ebro River; and the Ebro itself, which is part of the town's name. The word «pesquera», meaning a fishing spot, is symbolized by a barbel, a fish very common in the area, which I have depicted emerging from the water and placed bendwise. Additionally, the town features towers and a very high density of stone heraldic shields, one of the highest in Castile, hence the inclusion of the tower and the escutcheons.

The rule of tincture, «metal should not be put on metal, nor color on color», is the most famous rule of the heraldry. In the divisions of the field, for example, party per fess, party per pale, quartered, etc., the tinctures are beside each other, not one on top of the other, because the divisions are not charges, so the rule of tincture does not apply. Proporciones de una bordura y una filiera, una filiera es una bordura con su ancho disminuido en 2/3.

In heraldry, a diminished bordure is a diminished bordure. In the design, it is typically drawn at 2/3 the width of a standard bordure. Since the width of a standard bordure is usually 1/6 of the coat of arms' width, a diminished bordure calculated this way would be 1/9 of the coat of arms' width.

However, diminished bordures can also be found with a width of 1/2 that of a standard bordure, in other words, 1/12 of the coat of arms' width, or 1/3 that of a standard bordure, that is to say, 1/18 of the coat of arms's width.

The so-called bordure of pieces usually has a width of 1/2 that of a standard bordure, which is 1/12 of the coat of arms's width.

Proportions and angle of a bend and a bend sinister.

The proportion of a coat of arms is 5/6,

• with 5 being the base, the so-called adjacent side, b in the diagram, and
• with 6 being the height, the so-called opposite side, h in the diagram.

The tangent of the angle between the base of the shield and the diagonal of the bend is calculated as the opposite side divided by the adjacent side, that is, 6 divided by 5 which is 1.2 = 6/5.

If I wish to know the angle, I must apply the inverse function of the tangent, which is the arctangent. Therefore, the angle is arctangent(6/5) = arctangent(1.2) = 50.194^o, which in radians is 0.876, and I usually round it to 50.2^o.

The complementary angle to 50.2^o is 39.8^o (90^o - 50.2^o = 39.8^o), which is the angle formed between the diagonal of the bend sinister and the dexter side of the shield.

Depending on the artist, on his style or, in other cases, on the need to organize the space within the shield, angles of 45^o can also be used, corresponding to the diagonal angle of a square.

This is an schema to draw and standard. I do not use a fixed geometry, but in this case, I draw a 1/2 ratio between hightest side h at the flagpole and the diameter d of the circle on the end (see the lines and text Gules in the schema). The lenght of the standard depends on the bearer range and the kingdom, there are tables, but I only use them under the bearer instrucctions.

How to split the motto

Be aware about how to split the motto, the 1^st line on the left (from the observer point of view, the heraldic dexter) and the 2^nd line on the right (from the observer point of view, the heraldic sinister).

The inescutcheon represents the coat of arms of Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, 1453-1515, «The Great Captain». To paint the coat of arms of the Tercio Gran Capitán, I applied a geometric method that involves dividing both the width and the height of the shield into three equal parts. This way, the central inescutcheon, bearing the arms of Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, occupies exactly one third of the width and one third of the height of the main shield. Beyond its compositional function, this method also serves as a symbolic nod to the name of this historic military unit. The shield of the Tercio has been quite literally built using thirds. It is a small play on words and shapes that combines geometry with heraldic tradition.
