This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Couling (United Kingdom), and emblazoned by me (Spain). The arms reflect the heritage of the Alyahya family, descendants of the ancient tribe of Beno Tamim (Altamimi) and linked to the modern origins of Saudi Arabia. In an ordinary, I distinguish between engrailed and invected from the ordinary's point of view; for instance, I define a bordure as invected if, from the interior of the bordure, the edge appears invected (meaning the arcs appear concave); conversely, I say a bordure is engrailed if the arcs appear convex from its interior point of view; in this specific case, regarding a line of division, I describe it as engrailed because, from the perspective of the base of the coat of arms, the arcs of the partition line appear convex [Nisbet, A.; 1816; page 21, pictures 1 and 2].

The armorial [Urfé; 15^th century] contains only blazons written in French and is not decorated with shields.

The image shows my interpretation of the arms and, beneath it, the blazon of the king of Navarre as follows «Le Roy de Navarre... de gueles à l'escarboucle d'or pommelée alumée de sinoble en la moyenne en guise d'esmeraude» which could be translated as «The King of Navarre... Gules, a carbuncle Or pommetty, illuminated Vert in the middle in the manner of an emerald».

Note that the blazon does not suggest the presence of an emerald, but that the place corresponding to the central boss of the shield, from which the rays of the carbuncle emerge, is enamelled Vert.

In the article Universitas Studiorum Navarrensis about the arms of the University of Navarre I interpret the arms of Navarre borne in profile by the Archangel Saint Michael, which, by my way of painting it, lies halfway between the carbuncle and the chains, with round chain links and long carbuncle rays, where at the centre there is no emerald, but a Vert enamel in the manner of an emerald.

Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

I have made this imaginary coat of arms for the Arithmetic with the following characteristics: a semicircular external shape; its enamelled field with flat color Azure and Vert inks; all the pieces are metal Or, the motto is metal Argent with Sable letters; pieces and motto are illuminated and outlined in Sable; and the whole with a very lightly beaten metal finish.

For the division operation, instead of using the piece bend sinister, 2 bezants Or in pale could have been used. However, since the bezant is a diminished piece, I preferred to use 4 pieces, one for each quarter.

Tongues out

This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.

In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.

However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.

The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].

From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.

On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.

Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].

Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.

But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.

[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.

The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.

Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.

Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].

The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.

In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].

Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

Design rationale

Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life. The falcon that surmounts the helm as a crest represents sharpness and vigilance.

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower; this area was owned for centuries by the Marquis of Villena and hence the crown of Marquis. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

This is the coat of arms of Her Royal Highness Doña Leonor Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, and Princess of Viana, heiress of the throne of Spain as the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. This version of her coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The coat of arms of the Princess of Asturias is the same as her father's, the King, but with a mark of cadency which, in heraldic terms, is also know as brisure. In this case, the cadency mark is a label Azure with three points, which will be removed in due course. The label of three points is the main and most classic of the brisures, usually assigned to the eldest heir. It is said to originate from a piece of cloth the son would tie at the top of his shield to distinguish it from his father's. Other common brisures include the crescent, the mullet of five point, the marlet, the annulet, or the fleur de lis. In addition to these simple brisures, there are also combined brisures, which are brisures charged with another or others. For example, a crescent charged with a fleur de lis. Labels may also have their points charged with other marks. Many cadency systems become more complicated as generations progress and branches open up, so they tend to be rarely used except in very clear cases like this one.

The British heraldic artist Baz Manning, responsible for painting the coats of arms of the Order of the Garter in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, produced in polychromed wood the armorial bearings of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain following his admission into the Order. During this process, I had the honour of assisting him by providing official documentation, explaining the heraldic differences between the arms of Juan Carlos I and Felipe VI, clarifying various points, and reviewing the final details of the work prior to its installation in Windsor. The illustration accompanying this post is a collage made from a photograph of the completed shield, crafted by him in painted wood, sent to me by Baz Manning while it was drying, with explicit instructions not to publish it until its formal placement in the chapel. I used that image together with my own artistic interpretation of the King’s arms to carry out a detailed, side-by-side verification of every element. Although my contribution was modest, I am deeply proud to have taken part in a work destined to occupy a permanent place within one of the United Kingdom’s most emblematic heraldic settings.

Emblem interpreted by me as follows: an oval shape with proportions 5x6, wider than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges outlined in Sable and illuminated in the colours Gules and Vert and the metals Argent and Or; the Archangel Saint Michael vested in Or, unlike others who appear in Argent; his emerald simplified into an area enameled Vert; and the whole emblem has a lightly beaten metal finish.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.
