Personal heraldry

Within personal heraldry, I classify the arms of individuals, their families, or lineages.

When a coat of arms representing a person, such as in the case of a king, is also used to represent something else, such as their kingdom, I classify it as personal heraldry, prioritizing the representation of the individual over other possible uses, as this is the origin of heraldry.

The historical arms of Carlos de la Cerda or the current ones of Austin Charles Berry and of Stephan Urs Breu are examples of personal heraldry.

In Spanish, I use the name given by [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 53] and in English «personal heraldry», which is the most commonly accepted term.

Existing armories interpreted by me as follows: the shield's shape is pointed; the field has been enameled in flat azure; the 6 lions are illuminated; and the entire composition has a watercolor finish.

When blazoning these 6 lions, considering that in heraldry the natural arrangement of elements is from more in chief to fewer in base, it would suffice to specify nothing more than «or and rampant». However, adding their arrangement «3, 2, and 1» can aid the reader, as done by [Avilés, J.; 1725b; page 124] and [Avilés, J.; 1780b; page 142] when blazoning the arms of Alfonso Enrique de Vick, writing «sable, and six bezants or, three, two, and one», meaning 6 ordered elements. In these sequences of number arrangements, I prefer to write Arabic numerals rather than words because, at times, the sequences can be long.

Gules, a lion passant, guardant Or.

I have blazoned it as a leopard, which is the term used for a lion when passant, [Avilés, J.; 1725a; pages 290 and 295] and [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 325 and 330] «a lion, whose natural position is rampant;... unlike the leopard, which is... always passant» and «leopards have... their heads facing forward, showing both eyes,... lions are... in profile, revealing only one eye... Their posture is never rampant, like the lion’s, but always passant;... if leopards are ever depicted rampant, they are blazoned as ‘leopard-lions’,... and likewise, lions that are passant are blazoned as ‘lion-leopards’.».

For this interpretation of Eleanor’s coat of arms, I have followed [Edward IV of England; 1461; shield 18], where a leopard Or appears, but neither armed nor langued in Azure, representing the Duchy of Aquitaine.

It is believed that Henry I was the first King of England to have a coat of arms, featuring a single lion rampant, but no documentary evidence has yet been found [Rabbow, A.; 1999; paragraph 8].

[Ailes, A.; 1982; page 62] argues that Henry II may have used three different versions of his arms featuring a) a single lion rampant, b) two leopards, and c) three leopards. However, it remains unclear whether these versions were used sequentially over time or concurrently. For this interpretation, I have chosen the version with the lion rampant.

Round seal, a lion sejant. Circular motto: «Signum Fernandi Regis Hispanorum».

Existing seal interpreted by me as follows: the shape of the seal is circular; the motto is written in sable on its outer ring; inside, a seated lion that begins to be rampant and will eventually become so; y the whole rendered in flat sable ink; y the result is an impression in azure ink.

For the outline of the lion I have followed the round seal of the king in his «Charter of Benavente» [Fernando II de León; 1167], in which I consider the lion to be seated; although it could also be interpreted as rampant, or as intending to be so, as it will ultimately appear in the arms of his son, King Alfonso IX of León.

For the delineation of the motto I have followed the round seal of the king in his «Charter of the Alfoz of Benavente» [Fernando II de León; 1181], in which the lion, unlike the previous one, is clearly in a passant posture.

In [Martín Fuertes, J. A.; 2002] four other round seals of King Fernando II of León can be consulted:

• from the year 1160 (A.C. de León, number 4168) with a lion passant,
• from the year 1165 (A.C. de León, number 1041) with another lion passant,
• from the year 1168 (A.C. de León, number 170) with a lion statant, also described as arrested or at rest, as mentioned in [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 37] and [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 42].
• from the year 1187 (A.C. de León, number 1067) with a lion passant and regardant, that is, with its head turned toward the sinister side of the round seal, a posture described, for example, in [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 55] and [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 61].

She was the daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Alfonso VIII of Castile, and mother of 10 children documented in historical records, with her eldest daughter being Queen Berenguela of Castile.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Between the years 1217-1229, King Ferdinand III, before adopting this quarterly shield and when he was only King of Castile, in his seals «bears the arms of Leon (family arms) on the shield of the equestrian image and carries on the reverse the emblem of Castile (territorial sign)» [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1988; page 537].

This curved triangular shape of the escutcheon is inspired by the shield shown in the lower central part of a document issued by the king himself [Pedro IV de Aragón; 1353].

A semicircular-shaped shield of Aragon can be seen, for instance, in [Argote de Molina, G.; 1588; chapter XLII].

This shield, but with a pointed base, appears in the second part of the armorial [Wijnbergen; 1265; shield no. 1,293], under the title «Le roy Darragon». This second part was compiled between 1270 and 1285 and, since James I was king of Aragon from 1213 to 1276, it could refer to him; although it might also refer to his son Peter III, the Great, who succeeded James I in 1276.

This coat of arms is also the arms of Aix-en-Provence, granted to that French city, according to tradition, by Alfonso II of Aragon [Aix-en-Provence; 1351], grandfather of James I, the Conqueror.

[Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1988; page 537] tells us that, unlike other more territorial emblems, «from his earliest seal the pallets appear on the shield of the equestrian figures on both sides, and in line with this configuration the emblem is inherited, without distinction, by his three sons and all his grandsons... it seems one must conclude that the emblem had a familial, not territorial, character from the very beginning».

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 286] states that he will call «Chequey those ordinaries composed of these small squares, which alternate between metal and colour, or vice versa, just like the boards of those Games.» and he also writes regarding the usual number of panes that «it must have six ranks or rows of these squares, though it is not necessary to specify their number, or at least the shield must include more than fifteen panes; it is only required, to properly blazon it, to always observe the first square, which is in the chief dexter; so that, if this is Or, and the one that follows is Gules, it is said to be Chequey Or and Gules, and so with other colours and metals.»

Although Ponce initially proclaimed himself count of the county of Urgell without sufficient rights, the death of the legitimate heiress and his agreements and assistance to king James I of Aragon enabled him to legalise his title. During this process, the capital of the county ceased to be the municipality of Balaguer only to eventually become it once again.

A dimidiated coat of arms is the result of combining two shields of arms by taking the dexter half of the first and the sinister half of the second.

Dimidiation was used in the 13th and 14^th centuries to combine, for instance, the arms of two families.

Its blazoning method does not consist of describing what appears in each of the resulting quarters, but rather, by stating from the beginning that it is dimidiated, describing the original coats of arms. Thus, in this particular case of the arms of Teresa of Entenza, it is not stated that there are only two pallets in the first quarter, but that it is dimidiated and has four pallets, so the reader must know that from the four pallets, only the first two are visible due to the dimidiation.

This method of dimidiating the arms of predecessors results in very beautiful and original designs, but depending on the charges and figures involved, in other cases the result may be unrecognisable or even absurd.

Peter II of Urgell (1340–1408), Count of Urgell, Viscount of Àger, and Baron of Entença, Antillón, and Alcolea de Cinca, was a prominent figure of 14^th-century Catalan nobility and grandson of Alfonso IV of Aragon.

James II of Urgell, 1380–1433, known as the Unfortunate, Count of Urgell, Viscount of Àger, and Baron of Fraga, Antillón and Alcolea de Cinca, was one of the main claimants to the throne after the death of Martin I of Aragon. His rejection of the Compromise of Caspe led to his defeat and imprisonment.

Argent, in chief a mullet of six points Gules, between two flanches Sable

«Oschoven au Rhein» in the book [Menestrier, C. F.; 1659; page 315], it is blazoned «d'argent flanqué arrondi de sable à vne molette de mesme en chef», so the mullet would be Sable, bacause «de mesme» is written, and with a hole in the middle, this hole does not exits in other sources.

In the book [Rietstap, J. B.; 1861], it is blazoned «Argent, flanched in round Sable, Argent charged in chief of a mullet Gules», and in French «d'argent, flanqué en rond de sable, l'argent chargé en chef d'une étoile de gueules».

Initially, I had blazoned it in English as «Bendy sinister of seven Argent and Azure», but in a conversation on a forum of The International Heraldry Society, it was pointed out to me that in the case of an odd number of bands or bends, it should not be blazoned as «bendy». Therefore, the English blazon is equivalent to the Spanish blazon «Argent, three bendlets sinister Azure».

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

On the choice of language for the motto

The motto can be in any language. However, as a coat of arms is meant to last for eternity, living languages evolve, and the original meaning of the motto may be misinterpreted by future generations. For example, some words may eventually acquire unfortunate or inappropriate meanings over time. The Lloscós lineage resided on the island of Mallorca and succeeded in the position of royal procurator of the island. Lázaro Lloscós was the procurator of the island in 1332, his son Mateo Lloscós was in 1392 and his grandson Mateo Lloscós was too. Mateo Lloscós helped King Alonso V of Aragon, the Magnanimous, with the expenses of the Naples campaign in 1435 and, therefore, the king donated the town of Bañalbufar and the title of baron. Mateo Lloscós was the father of Guilaberto Lloscós y Soldevilla grand prior of the Order of Saint John.

Mathematician and astrophysicist from Harvard and Princeton Universities, as well as a classical musician, she represents a woman of the world—scientific and with diverse roots, who expresses her identity through a symbolic language of her own creation. Her design and execution are the result of an international team, in service of an equally international woman, and reflect a path of evolution toward which heraldry is advancing. The Kramer parrot (Psittacula krameri, Indian Ringneck) is shown in its natural colour. It is her favourite animal and at the same time evokes her Indian heritage. The red chrysanthemum, painted in a Japanese style, refers to her Japanese ancestry. The atom symbolises her education and professional career in the field of science. Blue, which dominates the whole, is her favourite colour.

He appears as the [Cofradía de Santiago; Century XIV; 4^th knight, 1^st of the page 21 V], from this 14^th century Book of the Brotherhood of Knights of Santiago de la Fuente. This was a brotherhood founded by the Burgos citizens at the time of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, 1311-1350. In the book, there are 14 saltires instead of 16, as it appears that one is missing on the sinister side of the base, and there are 4 in the chief instead of 5.

Design rationale

The leopards symbolize the family’s origin in Falaise, Normandy, as well as the nobility of heart to help those in need; their raised claw represents the ardor in striving to accomplish the proposed undertakings; their gaze forward stands for sincerity and honesty in daily actions; their walking in pair conveys the enduring unity of the family; and the gold of their skin reflects the purity of the soul, mirrored along the path of life. The Norman drakkar sailing westward symbolizes both the family’s journey to America in search of a new horizon and the quest for knowledge in science, technology, cosmology, theology, and the Universe itself. The oak acorns represent the Breton branch of the family and embody strength, perseverance, chivalry, kindness, loyalty, sacrifice, and faith. The motto proclaims that God may be our Master, Companion, and Guide, the Light along the path, and the Shield against adversity in life’s journey. The Cross of Lorraine honors Saint Joan of Arc, who bore it upon her standard.

Tongues out

This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.

In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.

However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.

The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].

From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.

On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.

Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].

Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.

But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.

[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.

The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.

Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.

Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].

The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.

In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].

Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. He bore his father's arms, replacing the lion Purpure of the Kingdom of León with a cross flory Purpure, likely due to his close association with the Order of Calatrava, whose emblem is a cross flory Gules. However, he retained the metal Argent field in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters and the lion's purple color, suggesting this was more of a conceptual change than a quartering by alliance with the Order of Calatrava.

The coat of arms of the Marquis Prato di Arnesano, requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara and painted by me. When a field is charged with 3 pallets, it results in 7 vertical areas: 4 belong to the field, 1 on the dexter, 2 between the pallets, and 1 on the sinister, and 3 correspond to the pallets themselves. In most cases, and especially in the present one, it is ideal that these 7 areas be of equal width. This allows me to apply a fur pattern like vair using a 7 columns structure, with 7 little bells of vair in the chief, so that each pallet contains the same vair arrangement. In this case, for greater harmony, I have also arranged the vair in 7 rows, although this is not required. The figure illustrates this concept.

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

The coat of arms of Gregorio Lanzagorta Llaguno, harbor of San Blas, and cigar maker in Nayarit, Mexico. This coat of arms was designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and painted by me in 3 steps: 1) outlined, 2) plain colors and metals, and 3) lights and shadows. The heraldic terms «gavilla» ~ «garb» in Castilian and English. Note that the English term «sheaf» also corresponds to the Castilian «gavilla». At first, I thought I remembered that in Castilian this sheaf of tobacco had the very specific name «tonga», and that is why I initially used «tonga de tabaco» ~ «tobacco sheaf». But I discovered that «tonga» is a more local than general term, [Real Academia Española; 2014] «Canarias y Cuba: Pila o porción de cosas apiladas en orden», so «tonga» is not as general as I believed, and therefore I moved on to use «gavilla de hojas de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco leaves», although this is somewhat long, and moreover the words «hojas» and «leaves» are redundant, since these sheaves are only made of leaves—just as wheat sheaves are always made of ears, so one does not say a sheaf of wheat ears. That is why I finally use for the blazon «gavilla de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco» in Castilian and English, respectively.
