Personal heraldry

Within personal heraldry, I classify the arms of individuals, their families, or lineages.

When a coat of arms representing a person, such as in the case of a king, is also used to represent something else, such as their kingdom, I classify it as personal heraldry, prioritizing the representation of the individual over other possible uses, as this is the origin of heraldry.

The historical arms of Carlos de la Cerda or the current ones of Austin Charles Berry and of Stephan Urs Breu are examples of personal heraldry.

In Spanish, I use the name given by [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 53] and in English «personal heraldry», which is the most commonly accepted term.

Existing armories interpreted by me as follows: the shield's shape is pointed; the field has been enameled in flat azure; the 6 lions are illuminated; and the entire composition has a watercolor finish.

When blazoning these 6 lions, considering that in heraldry the natural arrangement of elements is from more in chief to fewer in base, it would suffice to specify nothing more than «or and rampant». However, adding their arrangement «3, 2, and 1» can aid the reader, as done by [Avilés, J.; 1725b; page 124] and [Avilés, J.; 1780b; page 142] when blazoning the arms of Alfonso Enrique de Vick, writing «sable, and six bezants or, three, two, and one», meaning 6 ordered elements. In these sequences of number arrangements, I prefer to write Arabic numerals rather than words because, at times, the sequences can be long.

I have blazoned it as a leopard, which is the term used for a lion when passant, [Avilés, J.; 1725a; pages 290 and 295] and [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 325 and 330] «a lion, whose natural position is rampant;... unlike the leopard, which is... always passant» and «leopards have... their heads facing forward, showing both eyes,... lions are... in profile, revealing only one eye... Their posture is never rampant, like the lion’s, but always passant;... if leopards are ever depicted rampant, they are blazoned as ‘leopard-lions’,... and likewise, lions that are passant are blazoned as ‘lion-leopards’.».

For this interpretation of Eleanor’s coat of arms, I have followed [Edward IV of England; 1461; shield 18], where a leopard Or appears, but neither armed nor langued in Azure, representing the Duchy of Aquitaine.

It is believed that Henry I was the first King of England to have a coat of arms, featuring a single lion rampant, but no documentary evidence has yet been found [Rabbow, A.; 1999; paragraph 8].

[Ailes, A.; 1982; page 62] argues that Henry II may have used three different versions of his arms featuring a) a single lion rampant, b) two leopards, and c) three leopards. However, it remains unclear whether these versions were used sequentially over time or concurrently. For this interpretation, I have chosen the version with the lion rampant.

In [Humphery-Smith, C.; 1983; paragraph 2] the coat of arms of Eleanor Plantagenet, Queen Consort of Castile, is described, as part of an analysis on the origin of the three leopards in the coat of arms of England. However, in this description, an error is made by replacing the V with an X in the numeral of her husband and king, thus naming Alfonso VIII of Castile as if he were King Alfonso XIII: «Eleanor who married Alfonso XIII, King of Castile and Leon, has depicted on her tomb in the Huelgas monastery of the Cistercian nuns at Burgos, a thirteenth-century shield depicting three crowned leopards (lions passant guardant) gold on red».

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

It is with King Ferdinand III the Saint of Castile when «the emblematic system reaches its highest degree of perfection, acquiring two characteristics: realism, which becomes a hallmark of Spanish heraldry,... and the tendency to combine coats of arms» with the appearance of quarterly divisions replacing the cadency marks used in the rest of Europe [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 100].

«Oschoven au Rhein» in the book [Menestrier, C. F.; 1659; page 315], it is blazoned «d'argent flanqué arrondi de sable à vne molette de mesme en chef», so the mullet would be Sable, bacause «de mesme» is written, and with a hole in the middle, this hole does not exits in other sources.

In the book [Rietstap, J. B.; 1861], it is blazoned «Argent, flanched in round Sable, Argent charged in chief of a mullet Gules», and in French «d'argent, flanqué en rond de sable, l'argent chargé en chef d'une étoile de gueules».

Initially, I had blazoned it in English as «Bendy sinister of seven Argent and Azure», but in a conversation on a forum of The International Heraldry Society, it was pointed out to me that in the case of an odd number of bands or bends, it should not be blazoned as «bendy». Therefore, the English blazon is equivalent to the Spanish blazon «Argent, three bendlets sinister Azure».

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

Coat of arms of Her Excellency Ratu Muda Malka Bas Reuven emblazoned by me with a shape known as a vesica piscis, and with the blazon written in English and Spanish in a structured way to observe the parallelism between both forms. My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.

Design rationale

These arms were created for the descendants of Christopher Joseph Parnell Brady and Estella Amelia Arigho. The design is rooted in the traditional Brady Arms, including those recorded by the Ulster King of Arms in Dublin, while the hound’s head draws inspiration from the Arms of Caneggio, the Swiss municipality where the Arigho family originates, represented as Azure with a brach hound’s head couped Argent, but with the tinctures exchanged, painting Azure where it was Argent and vice versa. The number three holds dual significance. On the Brady side, it represents three generations tracing back to the Drumlins of County Cavan, those characteristic rounded hills of the Irish landscape. On the Arigho side, it symbolizes three generations leading to the Alps, represented by the chevron Argent over a Sable field, a nod to the family's Swiss heritage.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

Design rationale

Kathleen Kane's three recent matrilineal ancestors were all named after the Irish Saint Brigid of the 5^th and 6^th centuries. With the time, this saint added to her own story some of the characteristics of her namesake, the earlier Celtic goddess of water, poetry, and the alchemical force of fire. She is one of the patron saints of Ireland and her Feast Day is February 1^st.

These three women were formidable characters: resilient, resourceful, and independent. Each inspired their daughters to follow in their footsteps, reflecting the attributes associated with Saint Brigid, an icon of strength, piety, resourcefulness, and independence. They are symbolized by the three crosses of Saint Brigid.

Saint Brigid's Crosses, woven from straw or rushes and blessed, are traditionally hung in the rafters or beams of the house to ensure the saint's protection throughout the year for all household members. This symbolism connects the matrilineal ancestors with the home and the protection of the family, which, according to the motto, is everything.

The four leaves of the Silver Leaved Whitebeam represent Kathleen's four children. The interlaced stems symbolize the union of the family and their home in Dún Laoghaire, outside of which this tree grows.

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. Design rationale

The coat of arms of Markus Hermann Frank features a Franconian Rake, a heraldic reference to his surname, making this a case of canting arms. The Franconian Rake is the historical emblem of the Franconia region in Germany, traditionally blazoned as per fess dancetty of three points Gules and Argent. He is a Medical Doctor and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, which is reflected in the two fleams, surgical instruments historically used in medicine.

Dyes

This tartan has more black and yellow because these are the color Sable-black and metal Or-yellow of my coat of arms. Also, it has the other two colors Gules-red and Azure-blue, and one metal Argent-grey of my crest.

Structure

Over the black background, its main visual structure is a thin red line, a thick yellow line, and a thin red line because of the flag of Spain.

It is mostly symmetrical tartan because I am a heraldic artist and I love the symmetry and geometry. But there is a bit of asymmetry, two thin lines grey and blue, to break the uniformity.

Thread count

It is based in the 5 first terms (1, 2, 3, 5, 8) of the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...). This sequence is intimately connected with the golden ratio, 1.61803... that I use frequently in my designs. But for the thread count, I multiple the Fibonacci sequence by 6 to obtain more than 5 inches, then I use the numbers 6=(1x6), 12=(2x6), 18=(3x6), 30=(5x6), and 48=(8x6).
