This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.
In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.
However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.
The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].
From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.
On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.
Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].
Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.
But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.
[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.
The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.
Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.
Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].
The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.
In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].
Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

The main elements of her arms are the stag and the sabre. The stag symbolizes the reluctance to fight unless provoked. The sabre, resembling a Model 1902 US Army cavalry sabre, is chosen for its significance in both the US Army and the US Air Force. She is a combat veteran who served for 20 years, mostly in humanitarian and medical roles; therefore, the sabre is positioned with its tip towards the heraldic sinister in a non-aggressive attitude. Gules-red is chosen for its association with the military. She continued to serve her brother and sister veterans for another 25 years after her military retirement. Service is very important to her, and it is a value she wishes to pass down to her children and grandchildren, as her motto affirms, «Iustitia per Ministerium», Justice through Service. The yellow rose represents her home state of Texas. The acorn and its rounded leaves of the white oak tree represent Grandmother Oak, a connection with Mother Nature, and independence. Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life. The falcon that surmounts the helm as a crest represents sharpness and vigilance.

This design explores the placement of water-bougets, a medieval water vessel, in a 2+2 arrangement, with a fess vair.
One key consideration when arranging charges in heraldry is proportionality. In this case, the fess occupies 1/3 of the coat of arms's width and is positioned 1/3 of the height from the chief, rather than at the exact center, allowing the charges to balance harmoniously. The shape of the shield itself also plays a role: rounded shields can accommodate a 2+2 arrangement more comfortably than shields with a pointed base, which are better suited to 2+1 arrangements, this is de case of Dethick's arms.
Another challenge in heraldic design is asymmetry. To address the natural curves of the shield, the water-bougets may vary slightly in size or placement. This intentional asymmetry can help create a visually appealing composition that respects both tradition and the unique constraints of each design, because, heraldry is not only about rules but also about creativity.

In German, they are called «Wasserschlauch» in English «water-bougets» or «oges», and in French «bouses» or «chantepleures».
There is no specific heraldic term for them in Castilian. Based on «chantepleures», one could use «cantimploras», which are metallic or at least rigid. On the other hand, «oges» could translate as «odres», as they are typically made of leather as in this case. Additionally, since «water-bouget» are designed as a pair to be carried by a donkey or other animal, I have decided to use «par de odres» to convey the idea of one on each side of the animal.
In English, when there is a single charge, that is, a pair of water vessels, it is written in singular as «water-bouget», as can be seen in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 551]. [Friar, S.; 1987; page 68] defines «bouget» as «...a stylized representation of a yoke supporting two leather waterbags».

The concept of adoption conveys incorporation into a family: we adopt fundamental bonds, such as a child; deeply personal relationships, such as a companion animal; and also highly symbolic and identity-defining elements, such as a coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

Personal coat of arms of Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, grant G0134 by Dr. Charles A. Gauci, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta. This coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. I have written the blazon in English and Castilian in a structured way to observe the parallelism between both forms. Someone asked me a interesting question about the first quarter: «Why is the lion overlapping the fess (i.e., colour on colour)?» This was my answer: I had no choice in the design, since each quarter represents one of her ancestral lineages, and the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta provided the precise blazon for each of them. My work was to paint the coat of arms according to those official instructions. In the case of the lion, it overlaps slightly because it is shown walking upon the fess. And importantly, the rule of tincture does not apply to tiny details. A well-known example is the lions of the arms of the Kingdom of England, whose claws are color Azure over a color Gules field. In this case, the lion’s claws and the underside of its paws are color Gules over an color Azure fess, perfectly acceptable for such small elements.

Coat of arms of the House of Noronha in Portugal, a lineage of dual royal origin. The House of Noronha originated with Alfonso Enríquez of Castile, Count of Noreña and Gijón, the natural son of King Henry II of Castile, founder of the Trastámara dynasty, and of Elvira Íñiguez. The lineage became linked to the Portuguese Royal House through the marriage of Alfonso Enríquez to Isabel of Portugal, the natural daughter of King Ferdinand I of Portugal, an alliance arranged in the context of the Treaty of Santarém of 1373, which brought an end to the Fernandine Wars, during which Ferdinand I of Portugal confronted the kings of the House of Trastámara over the throne of Castile following the murder of Peter I at the hands of his half-brother Henry. The House of Noronha became established in Portugal, and its arms quarter those of the Kingdom of Portugal, differenced by a brisure consisting of a baston Sable, and those of the House of Trastámara. Canting arms of Dolores Peregrina Corona designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and me and emblazoned by me. In Castilian heraldic tradition, the «adiestrado» ~ «tierce» used in this coat of arms and its symmetrical «siniestrado» ~ «tierce sinister» are «irregular divisions of the field by one line» ~ «particiones irregulares». That is why I use «tierce» and «tierce sinister» in English. There is another possibility, which is to call the «adiestrado» ~ «pale in dexter flank» and the «siniestrado» ~ «pale in sinister flank», thus ceasing to be a type of «divisions of the field» ~ «particiones» and becoming «ordinaries» ~ «piezas fundamentales». This has implications, as the rule of tinctures would apply if it were considered a «pale» ~ «palo». In any case, I will write the blazon in both ways. These are canting arms because her surname is «Peregrina» ~ «pilgrim», and her coat of arms depicts the arm of a pilgrim, as she is one herself, with her staff and her gourd for carrying water, advancing towards the dexter, in order to reach the destination of her three most important life pilgrimages: Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem. Following [Petra Sancta, S.; 1634; pages 417–418], in seventeenth-century academic emblematics the staff symbolizes the road understood as an intellectual journey, proper to a traveller who appears humble yet is rich in knowledge, while the gourd, which may seem empty, represents the wisdom preserved within it and from which learning ultimately emerges.

The coat of arms of Ignasi Pujol was designed by him based on the ancient arms of the Pujol lineage and refined and emblazoned by me. In the English blazon, I used the term «pallet», which is the diminished pale, and in the Castilian blazon, I used the term «palo». However, in Castilian, the term «vara», which is a diminished pale, could have been used, writing «cuatro varas de gules» in the same style as it was written in English «four pallet Gules».

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

The Heraldry Society of Scotland ~ «The Heraldry Society of Scotland», was founded in 1977. Its objectives are to promote the study of heraldry and to encourage its correct use both in Scotland and abroad.
The HSS (acronym for The Heraldry Society of Scotland) encourages those who have a coat of arms and those who intend to adopt their own arms to become members of the society and also encourages to join all those interested in Scottish heraldry, therefore the HSS admits and has members from all over the world.

Coat of arms of the House of Trastámara, founded by Enrique of Trastámara, later King Henry II of Castile, son of Alfonso XI and his mistress Leonor de Guzmán. Adopted at birth by Rodrigo Álvarez de las Asturias, he inherited the lordship of the County of Noreña the following year upon his adoptive father’s death. Later, his father the king granted him the County of Trastámara, among other lordships, giving rise to the House and the Trastámara dynasty, which began when Henry II ascended the throne after killing his half-brother Peter I in 1369. The Trastámara dynasty ruled in Castile, Aragon, Navarre, and Naples, and came to an end with our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, both members of the House of Trastámara. This coat of arms has been created for Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim as a preparatory work for his armorial bearings. In that coat of arms, the House of Noronha inescutcheon bears the arms of Trastámara in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
