Design rationale

  • The stag trippant Gules came from the arms of the MacCarthy clan, also transcribed as McCarthy, but for difference attired and hoofed Sable, this Sable reflecting the peat-coloured soil of Gerryduff.
  • The chief Sable also from Garryduff, called «An Garraí Dubh» in Irish, which means «the black garden», referring to the peat-coloured dark soil; it is the home place of Eugene McCarthy and his family for generations.
  • The three geese volant Argent from the local parish of Monagae, «the bogland of the geese», and they are flying to sinister as the Irish people from the US return to their Ireland, flying east across the Atlantic Ocean, this symbolism also evokes the famous «Wild Geese» Irish of previous centuries who emigrated to mainland Europe and further afield to serve in the armies of France, Spain, and Austria, many of the name McCarthy included.
  • A terrace in base Vert with a fess Or because these are the colours of the local GAA* football and hurling club, established in 1896, GAA means Gaelic Athletic Association.
  • And the motto «An Garraí Dubh go Brách» means «Garryduff Forever».

I have interpreted this coat of arms with a semi-circular shape; tintures or, sable, vert and gules; outlined with sable; and a freehand finish.

In Polish heraldic tradition the color Sable can be over other colors, the color Vert in this case. The following bibliographical references can be consulted about the Polish use of the color Sable over other colors:

  • [Bakala, K.; 2010; page 17] has written «nie pozwala nakladania metalu na metal, a barwy na barwe, za wyjatkiem barwy czarnej i purpurowej» ~ «does not allow to put metal on metal and color on color, except the color Sable and Purpure», notice that Sable and Purpure are the neutral colors whilst Gules, Azure and Vert are energetic colors.
  • [Marecki, J.; 2012; page 67] has written about the rule of colors and metals «wyjatkiem byla czern, która laczono zarówno z metalami, jak i z innymi barwami» ~ «the exception was black, which was combined with both metals and other colors».

The Commoners' Certification of Arms for Tomasz Arkadiusz Grzeszkowiak, arms designed by Tomasz Steifer and emblazoned by me.

Gules, a base enarched Vert, overall a cross patty fitchy Or, piercing in base the head of a serpent nowed and facing sinister Sable, langued Gules. Crest: Upon a helm affronty, with a wreath Sable and Gules, in a front of three ostrich feathers alternately Sable and Gules a paschal lamb Argent, haloed Or and Gules, supporting a staff Or, flying a banner Argent charged with a cross Gules. Mantling: Gules doubled Sable. Motto: «Amor vincit omnia»

In the blazon of this certification, I wrote the expression «a Base enarched Vert», it is correct. But the expression «a Mount Vert» it is also possible. In the original expression in the Polish blazon is «na zielonym wzgórkuon» ~ «the green hill».
