Design rationale

• The stag trippant Gules came from the arms of the MacCarthy clan, also transcribed as McCarthy, but for difference attired and hoofed Sable, this Sable reflecting the peat-coloured soil of Gerryduff.
• The chief Sable also from Garryduff, called «An Garraí Dubh» in Irish, which means «the black garden», referring to the peat-coloured dark soil; it is the home place of Eugene McCarthy and his family for generations.
• The three geese volant Argent from the local parish of Monagae, «the bogland of the geese», and they are flying to sinister as the Irish people from the US return to their Ireland, flying east across the Atlantic Ocean, this symbolism also evokes the famous «Wild Geese» Irish of previous centuries who emigrated to mainland Europe and further afield to serve in the armies of France, Spain, and Austria, many of the name McCarthy included.
• A terrace in base Vert with a fess Or because these are the colours of the local GAA* football and hurling club, established in 1896, GAA means Gaelic Athletic Association.
• And the motto «An Garraí Dubh go Brách» means «Garryduff Forever».

Party per pale, Vert and Gules, overall a saltire Argent charged with an eagle displayed, facing sinister Sable, grasping in its sinister claw a prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) couped Vert, fructed Gules, leaved Or, and in its dexter claw and beak a serpent Vert, langued Gules, the fangs Or.

This is the coat of arms of María de Jesús Sánchez Juárez, also known as «Aunt Susan», great-granddaughter of Benito Juárez, President of Mexico from 1858 to 1872. This coat of arms has been designed by her nephew Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and has been outlined by me. From a conventional heraldic perspective, the 3 elements, the serpent, the eagle facing sinister, and the prickly pear cactus, could have been treated as separate charges, thereby avoiding the impression of a small scene. In this particular design, however, they are deliberately kept together because they represent the so called «Juarista eagle» as a single iconographic unit: an eagle facing sinister, holding a serpent with its dexter claw and beak while standing upon a prickly pear cactus. Separating the serpent, eagle and cactus would weaken this intended historical reference. The principal artistic licence taken in adapting this composition to the saltire is that the cactus, rather than appearing rooted in the ground, seems almost to be suspended in the air. Thus, within the logic of this design, serpent, eagle and cactus function as a single heraldic charge rather than as 3 independent charges.
