Teamwork navigating towards a common goal (lymphad with sail and oars), keeping trade secrets (book with clasps), and solidity in support and growth (linden). The motto «Ubi concordia ibi victoria» means «Where there is unity, there is victory». It conveys the idea that success arises from harmony and collaboration between the team and its clients, working together toward shared goals.

The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

A mug featuring the coat of arms and motto of Bárbaro Jonathan López Linares, Cuba, designed by him and emblazoned by me. My emblazonment was used to personalize this mug. The criterion is that the tinctures must remain consistent within the same interpretation of the arms. If I paint a version of this shield, I will use a single azure for the field and for the mantling, should I depict it; the same or for the three monstrances; and the same argent for the wolf and for the sacred hosts. But in a different interpretation, another azure may be used, provided that it is azure, as well as another or and another argent. The azure used by one artist does not bind the next; that is why we use terms such as azure, which means any blue except sky blue. If we were forced to use exactly the same azure in every interpretation of the same arms, we would have to blazon them, for example, with Pantone codes or RGB specifications, and that is not what we do. Tinctures are fixed in logos, but not in coats of arms; this is one of the reasons why coats of arms leave much more room for artistic expression than corporate logos.

Rif War, July 23, 1921, banks of the Igan River, North Africa

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. In English, the shaft of the column is treated as the primary element, and the tinctures of the base and capital are then specified. Design rationale

These arms were created for Christopher Edwards from New South Wales, Australia, drawing elements from the coat of arms of the Irish Richard Edwards of Old Court (Ess.). The lower field inherits the vert and the stag or armed argent from the ancestral lineage, which in this version evolves into a stag's massacre or. The three eagles in the chief of the original Edwards arms transform into two ravens representing his German and Danish mother, also his favourite birds. The ravens flank the acorn, a symbol of growth and prosperity. The stag's massacre in base references the Edwards lineage and represents defence and noble blood. The crest features comedy and tragedy masks conjoined, reflecting the inseparable duality of life. The mantling displays bunches of grapes derived from Christopher's nickname «Grapes», symbolizing a personal identity woven throughout the coat of arms; these same bunches later serve as the base for the cat supporters, argent and sable, embodying balance through contrast. Green, Christopher's favourite colour and the colour of his eyes, also appears in the ancestral Edwards arms; its presence runs throughout the design as a tribute to his time in the military. The motto «Si non rides, flebis» ~ «If you do not laugh, you will cry» reflects a philosophy of choosing joy over sorrow.

The English term «debruised» is written in Castilian as «resaltado»; I usually write it as «debruised by» ~ «resaltado de», where the charge below is debruised by the one above. It is analogous to «charged by» ~ «cargado de», except that the upper charge projects beyond the surface of the lower one; in this case, parts of the stag project beyond the surface of the sun and the clouds. In English, «stag» corresponds to the Castilian «ciervo», although «deer» is occasionally found instead. When a stag's antlers are of a different tincture from its body, the English term is «attired»; in Castilian I prefer «ramado» to «arcornado». When the animal issues from the wreath, rather than standing upon it, I write «demi» in English and «saliente» in Castilian; «demi» is reminiscent of the Castilian prefix «semi». The arms of Geremías Reyes Zelaya express the history of his Honduran family: emigration, work, settlement, prosperity, and inherited values. The fess wavy Azure represents the river and the crossing of the frontier, recalling the family's emigration in search of a better life. The three roundels Gules in chief evoke the family's new settlement, prosperity, and involvement in trade. The mount Vert in base represents the family's rural origins, the mountains, the land, and the cultivation of maize and beans. Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Design rationale

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant of the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. In other case it appears to rest purely on the whims of the title-holder. The Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta will normally choose to display coronets of rank immediately above the shield but will not stand in the way of family tradition should there be a preference for the coronet to be displayed elsewhere in the Arms. Design rationale

In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

Contourné ~ Contornado

There are authors who limit the use of the term contornado to turned heads that look to the sinister side of the shield. However, here I use contornado in a more general way, following [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 61] who defines it as «contornados se dice de los animales ú de las cabezas de ellos, vueltos á la siniestra del Escudo».

There is another more specific use of the term contornado for the crescent moon: «bueltos se dice de los Crecientes que miran á el lado derecho del Escudo, porque mirando á el siniestro se dice contornados», [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 52].

In English, the equivalent term that I have most frequently seen is «contourné», which comes from French.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

The most common star is the five-pointed one, therefore, when the number of points is not stated five are assumed, so, for example, [Avilés, J.; 1780a; página 27, ilustración 6] on Guillaume in France writes «trae de plata, y una Faxa de azur, cargada de una Estrella de oro, y acompañada de tres mirletas de sable» and in his illustration number 6 the star has 5 points. But when the number is other than 5, it must be specified, for example, [Avilés, J.; 1780a; página 92, ilustración 197] on Oschoven on the Rhine writes «trae de plata, y una Estrella de seis rayos de gules en Gefe, flanqueado en óvalo de sable» and it is for this reason that in the blazon included in this article, in addition to specifying the number 8, the term «rayos» has been used instead of its synonym «puntas».

The Royal Spanish Academy was founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, eighth Marquess of Villena and Duke of Escalona, with the aim of «fixing the words and vocabulary of the Castilian language in its greatest propriety, elegance, and purity». A year later, in 1714, its creation was approved by a Royal Decree of Philip V.

To symbolize its purpose, its emblem with a crucible to the fire and its motto «Limpia, fija y da esplendor» [Zamora Vicente, A.; 1999] were chosen by secret ballot. In some old versions of this emblem the motto can be read with the term «fixa» and a comma before the conjunction, that is, «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor».

This article is illustrated with my personal interpretation of this emblem of the Royal Spanish Academy, crested with a closed royal crown of 8 arches, of which the 5 frontal ones are completely visible.

In this, as in any of my works, I always consult its dictionaries, almost as much, as the most interesting and specific works on the subject of study.

Design rationale

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Adopting a traditional Spanish style for the arms aligns with Mr. Larkin's life in Spain, embracing its rich heraldic heritage and distinctive artistic symbolism.
