I have illuminated the shield inside the emblem with gules, argent and or tinctures; the figure of Justice is shaded; The banners and mottos have argent and azure letters accompanied by 3 stars; the shape of the emblem is oval; and the ensemble has a lightly hammered metal finish.

In the descriptions of objects that contain coats of arms, for example, this ANPC emblem, I put the blazon of the shield in square brackets following its rules and, outside of these brackets, the description of the exterior ensemble of the emblem. The reason for this is that it is in these descriptions of the exterior where the language of the blazon is not always totally applicable.

The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

Coat of arms of Barbaro Jonathan Lopez Linares, Cuba, designed by him and emblazoned by me. These are canting arms, as the main charge of the coat of arms is a wolf ~ lupus ~ Lope ~ Lopez. In heraldry, beasts are usually depicted in an aggressive attitude, for example, with gaping jaws, protruding tongue, and visible fangs; in this case, it was the armiger’s wish that his wolf should not display such an aggressive expression; in my interpretation, I deliberately avoided those features of ferocity and instead sought to give the wolf a dignified and imposing look, one that inspires respect rather than open aggressiveness.

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. In English, the shaft of the column is treated as the primary element, and the tinctures of the base and capital are then specified. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Design rationale

The fox refers to the clever and resourceful character attributed to the armiger’s family. The federschwert evokes his dedication to Historical European Martial Arts, in particular the German school of Liechtenauer and the long sword. The oak leaves have a double meaning: they symbolize nature and spirituality, linked to his belonging to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and being nine in number they allude to his Irish heritage and the legendary figure of Niall of the Nine Hostages. His ancestry includes Irish, English and German roots, the latter once again connected to the sword. The motto translates as «Clever, Caring, Witty».

Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Design rationale

The arms symbolise the dawn of a new life. The field is tierced per fess to evoke the sky in 3 stages: Sable for the darkness of night, Azure for the horizon at first light, and Sanguine for the rising sun. The 7 stars of Ursa Major, in their traditional arrangement, evoke guidance, constancy, and a Dantesque reference, as the constellation appears in the Divine Comedy. The demi-sun in base, gold upon sanguine, marks the moment of emotional awakening, the dawn of love. The scroll motto «Incipit Vita Nova», the first line of Dante’s Vita Nuova, reflects a personal spiritual transformation. The Azure speaks of eternal loyalty, and the silver stars of purity. The choice of Sanguine, both for the sunlit sky and for the scroll and mantling, is also an homage to Beatrice’s dress as described by Dante at their first encounter. All of the above holds a parallel with the bearer’s personal life, which gives this composition a dual significance, both literary and deeply intimate. The raven as crest, a symbol of memory and intelligence, represents the collector’s spirit and a deep inner life.

Design rationale

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

On the choice of language for the motto

The motto can be in any language. However, as a coat of arms is meant to last for eternity, living languages evolve, and the original meaning of the motto may be misinterpreted by future generations. For example, some words may eventually acquire unfortunate or inappropriate meanings over time. The advantage of dead languages, such as Latin, over living ones is that they do not evolve, and the meaning of the motto remains more resistant to the passage of time.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».
