This is the coat of arms of the Universidad Peñafort of Mexico. It is a Law university and its name came from Raymond of Penyafort (XIII century) who compiled the Decretals of Gregory IX, which mostly remained in use until 1917, and that is why it is the patron saint of lawyers. The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The motto «Sic itur ad astra» comes from Virgil's Aeneid IX 641, where it is spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Iulus, and it translates to «Thus one journeys to the stars».

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and an Assistant Professor at the same institution. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs in the design reflect her academic background. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the official state flower of Texas since 1901. She was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and for this reason, she requested a shield ending in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition.

The oak tree laden with acorns Or in the first quarter symbolizes the family's fertility. The oak and the domed tower in the second quarter, in their transformed forms, are elements from the coat of arms of the Simon lineage, which they represent. The third quarter derives from the arms of the Faus family and represents it. The plain cross in the fourth quarter is a symbol of Christ and of Aragon. The Latin motto reads: «Strong as Iron».

Design rationale

In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

Coat of arms interpreted as follows: the shape of the shield is a semi-circular arch; the field has been illuminated in metal Or; the cross of Montesa is outlined in Sable and illuminated in Sable and Gules; the royal crown is closed, outlined in Sable and illuminated the metal in Or, the pearls in Argent, the orb in Azure and Or, the gemstones in Gules and Vert, the inner cloth in Gules, and the visible hollow at its base in Sable; and the whole has a slightly beaten metal finish.

Regimental Motto

The Latin motto «In hoc signo vinces» is translated as «In this sign, you shall conquer».

Globus cruciger ~ Orb

It is called orb ~ «globus cruciger», the first in Spanish and the second in Latin, referring to the part of the royal crown, a jewel, or a jewel itself that recreates the shape of the globe topped with a cross.

The official blazon of this coat of arms is «Quarterly Azure and Gules a lion’s face crowned with an Ancient Crown Or within a tressure flory on the outer edge of the same». The following are my comments to the official blazon:

• With «crowned» can be assumed the common default «crowned with an ancient crown».
• With «tressure flory» can be assumed the common default «tressure flory on the outer edge».
• I use to specify the «langued», for example Gules or Azure, because I think there is not a common default tincture for «langued» in all heraldic traditions.
