The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

The coat of arms of the Barrio Bajo of Mon'Tarena, Queretaro, Mexico, designed by Joaquin Haces Perdomo and me and emblazoned by me. The jaguar symbolizes power and agility and is native to the tropical forests of southern Mexico. Revered by ancient Mesoamerican cultures, it is the largest feline in the Americas and an apex predator known for its strength and stealth. Unlike the heraldic panther, the spots on its fur are not multicolored.

Rif War, July 23, 1921, banks of the Igan River, North Africa

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

The illustration brings together two different aspects. On the one hand, the photograph captures the moment in which I explain the coat of arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, during one of my heraldic art exhibitions, pointing directly to its components while the audience observes. On the other hand, it shows the coat of arms of Charles V as painted by me. All the works visible in the image have been created by me. In this exhibition, I combined the presentation of my coats of arms with a live music concert featuring works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Komitas, and Carlos Gardel.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain emblazoned by me. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life. The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The Promet family are the founders and owners of Promet Restoration, a company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Their tradition began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 and later established in Seattle, Promet Restoration has since restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces. The company’s mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come» embodies both artistic integrity and respect for craftsmanship. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. The Diccionario de la Lengua Española, [Real Academia Española; 2014], in the 3^rd definition of «cabrio», states: «m. Heráld. Honourable ordinary, in the form of a half saltire, whose point extends to the center of the chief and appears as an open compass». It gives as a synonym «chebrón», which interestingly is spelled with «b», although it is also accepted with «v», that is, «chevrón», and the definition of «chebron (chevron)» refers back to «cabrio», considering «cabrio» the main term. For this reason I use «cabrio» instead of «chevrón», just as I use «sotuer», see the definition of «chevron» as a half «sotuer», instead of «aspa». In English the term «chevron» is used, and for its diminished version «chevronel», while in Spanish the heraldic term for the diminished version is «tenaza». In English the same root is used for «chevron» and its diminished version «chevronel», while in Spanish «cabrio» and «tenaza» have different origins, the latter visually referring to the tool for gripping and cutting that bears the same name.

Contourné ~ Contornado

There are authors who limit the use of the term contornado to turned heads that look to the sinister side of the shield. However, here I use contornado in a more general way, following [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 61] who defines it as «contornados se dice de los animales ú de las cabezas de ellos, vueltos á la siniestra del Escudo».

There is another more specific use of the term contornado for the crescent moon: «bueltos se dice de los Crecientes que miran á el lado derecho del Escudo, porque mirando á el siniestro se dice contornados», [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 52].

In English, the equivalent term that I have most frequently seen is «contourné», which comes from French.

In English heraldry the term caboshed applies to the head of any animal shown affronty, but it always refers only to the head, with no part of the neck visible; for example, one may blazon «a bull’s head caboshed» or «a wolf’s head caboshed», whereas if the neck is shown the proper term is «a bull’s head couped affronty»; in other words, a head caboshed does not show any of the neck, it is just the animal’s face; this usage of caboshed is valid both for horned animals such as the stag, the goat, or the bull, and also for hornless animals such as the wolf; in Castilian heraldry, however, [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 2002] defines «reencuentro» specifically for the frontal head of the bull, and by extension for other horned animals such as the stag or the goat; thus, for a wolf, one should properly blazon simply «una cabeza de lobo de frente» ~ «a wolf’s head affronty»; finally, the [Real Academia Española; 2014] standardizes the spelling «reencuentro» with double «e», although it also accepts the shorter variant «rencuentro», which is the one I personally prefer to use. In heraldry, when a monstrance is blazoned proper, it is understood that the entire structure of the object is of the metal Or, with its characteristic details such as rays, sunburst, or base also in gold, and that inside it the Host is visible in Argent; therefore, a «monstrance proper» must always appear in gold with the silver Host at its center.

On the choice of language for the motto

The motto can be in any language. However, as a coat of arms is meant to last for eternity, living languages evolve, and the original meaning of the motto may be misinterpreted by future generations. For example, some words may eventually acquire unfortunate or inappropriate meanings over time. The advantage of dead languages, such as Latin, over living ones is that they do not evolve, and the meaning of the motto remains more resistant to the passage of time.

The Cross of the Episcopal Church, a lion because of the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, a Holy Spirit symbol, the tinctures of Anaya Argent, Or, and Azure, and her motto for being the first woman ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Anglican Church in Latin America, and one of the first in the United States of America.

This is the coat of arms of the Universidad Peñafort of Mexico. It is a Law university and its name came from Raymond of Penyafort (XIII century) who compiled the Decretals of Gregory IX, which mostly remained in use until 1917, and that is why it is the patron saint of lawyers. This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The motto over the coat of arms, «Oruganda Rw'Abahinda», means "Clan of Abahinda", and the motto below, «Abazira Nkyende», states that their totemic animal is the monkey. This coat of arms was renewed by the Clan under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and I have had the honour of refining and rendering its design. Harmonising the European rules of heraldry with African expressiveness is no easy task, yet it can yield great results.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Adopting a traditional Spanish style for the arms aligns with Mr. Larkin's life in Spain, embracing its rich heraldic heritage and distinctive artistic symbolism.

Coat of arms interpreted as follows: a semicircular (round) base; the field in flat Azure; the field and charges are illuminated in the tinctures Azure and the metals Argent and Or, all outlined in Sable; my rendition of this coat of arms differs from others in that the sun’s rays, although outlined in Sable, are Or; in the legibility of the text written on the book; and in separating with a dot the words that form the motto; and the whole finished with a beaten-metal effect.

• With «crowned» can be assumed the common default «crowned with an ancient crown».
• With «tressure flory» can be assumed the common default «tressure flory on the outer edge».
• I use to specify the «langued», for example Gules or Azure, because I think there is not a common default tincture for «langued» in all heraldic traditions.
• The use of «overall» can help to understand the blazon, then I add it.

Coat of arms of Yaroslav Pototsky emblazoned by me under his directions. In some heraldic traditions, as in this case, it is the pelican that feeds its young with the blood from its chest; in other traditions, it is the heron. In all, it is a mystical symbol of supreme sacrifice.

It is an oval emblem in Argent, with its crucible, also in Argent, over a bonfire of Gules and Or and surrounded by its flames, surmounted by a closed Royal crown with 8 arches, 5 of which are visible, and its motto, as originally written «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor», around it.
