I have illuminated the shield inside the emblem with gules, argent and or tinctures; the figure of Justice is shaded; The banners and mottos have argent and azure letters accompanied by 3 stars; the shape of the emblem is oval; and the ensemble has a lightly hammered metal finish.

In the descriptions of objects that contain coats of arms, for example, this ANPC emblem, I put the blazon of the shield in square brackets following its rules and, outside of these brackets, the description of the exterior ensemble of the emblem. The reason for this is that it is in these descriptions of the exterior where the language of the blazon is not always totally applicable.

The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

Regiment's Motto

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Globus cruciger ~ Orb

It is called orb ~ «globus cruciger», the first in Spanish and the second in Latin, referring to the part of the royal crown, a jewel, or a jewel itself that recreates the shape of the globe topped with a cross.

The illustration brings together two different aspects. On the one hand, the photograph captures the moment in which I explain the coat of arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, during one of my heraldic art exhibitions, pointing directly to its components while the audience observes. On the other hand, it shows the coat of arms of Charles V as painted by me. All the works visible in the image have been created by me. In this exhibition, I combined the presentation of my coats of arms with a live music concert featuring works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Komitas, and Carlos Gardel.

Design rationale

The main elements of her arms are the stag and the sabre. The stag symbolizes the reluctance to fight unless provoked. The sabre, resembling a Model 1902 US Army cavalry sabre, is chosen for its significance in both the US Army and the US Air Force. She is a combat veteran who served for 20 years, mostly in humanitarian and medical roles; therefore, the sabre is positioned with its tip towards the heraldic sinister in a non-aggressive attitude. Gules-red is chosen for its association with the military. She continued to serve her brother and sister veterans for another 25 years after her military retirement. Service is very important to her, and it is a value she wishes to pass down to her children and grandchildren, as her motto affirms, «Iustitia per Ministerium», Justice through Service. The yellow rose represents her home state of Texas. The acorn and its rounded leaves of the white oak tree represent Grandmother Oak, a connection with Mother Nature, and independence. Overall, a bald eagle displayed, the symbol of America, is placed on the crest of her arms.

The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

This coat of arms has been created by the family, combining the tower with a turret of the ancient arms of the lineage Ormazabal of the Basque Country, but with different tinctures, with a wyvern referring to the dragon issuing from the port of a castle in the ancient arms of the lineage Lazaro of Aragon. The Latin motto "«Res non verba» means «Deeds, not words» emphasizes the importance of actions over mere words.

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. In other case it appears to rest purely on the whims of the title-holder. Design rationale

These arms were created for the descendants of Christopher Joseph Parnell Brady and Estella Amelia Arigho. The design is rooted in the traditional Brady Arms, including those recorded by the Ulster King of Arms in Dublin, while the hound’s head draws inspiration from the Arms of Caneggio, the Swiss municipality where the Arigho family originates, represented as Azure with a brach hound’s head couped Argent, but with the tinctures exchanged, painting Azure where it was Argent and vice versa. The number three holds dual significance. On the Brady side, it represents three generations tracing back to the Drumlins of County Cavan, those characteristic rounded hills of the Irish landscape. On the Arigho side, it symbolizes three generations leading to the Alps, represented by the chevron Argent over a Sable field, evoking the snow-capped peaks of the mountains, a nod to the family's Swiss heritage.

This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

Design rationale

Promet Restoration is company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 by Tynis Promet, and later established in Seattle, the company continues a family tradition that began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Over the decades, Promet Restoration has restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces, upholding the mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come». The arms of the company derive from those of the Promet family, simplified and adapted for corporate use. They retain the Estonian heraldic inspiration and the distinctive dovetailed base, a reference to the woodworking joint symbolising precision, craftsmanship, and enduring quality, the very principles upon which the company was founded. The family motto «Per Aspera ad Astra» gives way here to the corporate motto «Quality & Integrity · Est. 1989», expressing the firm’s professional ethos and artistic dedication.

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; página 113] writes «Paté, se dice de las Cruces, cuyos extremos se ensanchan un poco. Viene esta voz de la latina patula, cosa extendida, ó dilatada», and in this way uses the term «Cruz paté», instead of cruz patada, in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; páginas 60, 91, 92, 127 y 297]. In the blazon at escueladeheraldica.es/armorial-riag-pagina-1 the term «crus estrecha paté de gules» is also used, although I have preferred to use in this blazon the equivalent expression «una estrecha patada de gules».

Its Latin motto «Prior tempore potior iure» means that whoever comes first in time has more right than whoever comes after, and naturally refers to the concept of registration, since, in general, the person who registers a coat of arms first has more right to defend its ownership than the person who registers the same coat of arms after the first.

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The Royal Spanish Academy was founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, eighth Marquess of Villena and Duke of Escalona, with the aim of «fixing the words and vocabulary of the Castilian language in its greatest propriety, elegance, and purity». A year later, in 1714, its creation was approved by a Royal Decree of Philip V.

To symbolize its purpose, its emblem with a crucible to the fire and its motto «Limpia, fija y da esplendor» [Zamora Vicente, A.; 1999] were chosen by secret ballot. In some old versions of this emblem the motto can be read with the term «fixa» and a comma before the conjunction, that is, «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor».

This article is illustrated with my personal interpretation of this emblem of the Royal Spanish Academy, crested with a closed royal crown of 8 arches, of which the 5 frontal ones are completely visible.

In this, as in any of my works, I always consult its dictionaries, almost as much, as the most interesting and specific works on the subject of study.

Design rationale

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Adopting a traditional Spanish style for the arms aligns with Mr. Larkin's life in Spain, embracing its rich heraldic heritage and distinctive artistic symbolism.

Coat of arms interpreted as follows: a semicircular (round) base; the field in flat Azure; the field and charges are illuminated in the tinctures Azure and the metals Argent and Or, all outlined in Sable; my rendition of this coat of arms differs from others in that the sun’s rays, although outlined in Sable, are Or; in the legibility of the text written on the book; and in separating with a dot the words that form the motto; and the whole finished with a beaten-metal effect.

UPM coat of arms and doctoral ring

This image shows my interpretation of the coat of arms of the Technical University of Madrid, together with the doctoral signet ring that the University presented to me on the occasion of my PhD in Artificial Intelligence in 1992, a field in which I have worked since 1985.

[Avilés, J.; 1780a; página 40] writes that «se dice de los animales por las uñas, y garras que la naturaleza les dio para su defensa, como de los Leones», as is the case here.

Coat of arms interpreted with: a pointed base; its quarters enamelled in plain Azure and Gules; its tressure flory and the leopard face illuminated in Or and Gules; the motto is illuminated in Gules on an Argent scroll lined Azure; and all outlined in Sable and with a parchment finish.

Tressure and orle

The tressure, according to [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 242 and 243], «es una especie de Orla estrecha, ó un filete puesto en la misma situación de la Orla», regarding its dimensions in relation to those of the orle it states that «es de la mitad de su anchura, correspondiente á la quarta parte de la latitud de la Bordura, y la vigésimaquarta del Escudo», further clarifying that of these pieces called tressures there are «simples, y dobles, algunas veces floronadas, otras contrafloronadas, y también flordelisadas.», the last of which is the case of the present coat of arms.

Since the tressure is a piece of half the width of the orle it can be considered a diminutive piece, and that is how it is read in many texts; however, the «piezas fundamentales de la heráldica son», according to [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 144], «aspa, banda, barra, bordura, cabrio, campaña, cantón, cruz, escusón, faja, franco cuartel, jefe, jirón, lambel, orla, palo, perla, pila, pira y trechor» and, accordingly, in his synoptic table [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; pages 150-151] includes the tressure within the category of fundamental pieces.

Leopard face and lion face

One of the fundamental differences in heraldry between leopards and lions is that the former «tienen siempre la cabeza de frente, mostrando los dos ojos» and the latter «son siempre de perfil, y no descubren sino uno solo», [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 330]. It is for this reason that, as against the English blazon which reads «a Lion face» ~ «una cara de león», in Castilian I write «una cabeza de leopardo».

Motto

The motto «Entalente a parler d'armes» bearing in mind that in French «entalente», in the context of battle, means «hábil y valiente», could be translated as «Valientes y con talento para hablar de armas», my shorter and freer translation would be «¡Hablemos de armas!» with exclamation marks to show that the one who says it is eager to do so. Regarding the translation of «entalente» the following article by Auguste Vachon, Outaouais Herald Emeritus, is of interest: Entalenté à parler d'armes. Additionally, it should be noted that today it would be written as «Entalente à parler d'armes» with a grave accent.

The official blazon of this coat of arms is «Quarterly Azure and Gules a lion’s face crowned with an Ancient Crown Or within a tressure flory on the outer edge of the same». The following are my comments to the official blazon:

• With «crowned» can be assumed the common default «crowned with an ancient crown».
• With «tressure flory» can be assumed the common default «tressure flory on the outer edge».
• I use to specify the «langued», for example Gules or Azure, because I think there is not a common default tincture for «langued» in all heraldic traditions.
• The use of «overall» can help to understand the blazon, then I add it.
