In general, when the dividing lines are diagonal, whether straight or curved, the traditional French terminology is preferred in English. When the dividing lines extend from chief to base and are straight, «Chaussé» ~ «Calzado» designates a partition in the form of a «V», whereas «Chapé» ~ «Cortinado» designates a partition in the form of a caret «^». When these same partitions are drawn with curved lines, the French adjective «ployé», meaning curvilinear, is added, giving «Chaussé ployé» ~ «Calzado curvilíneo», in the form of a «V», and «Chapé ployé» ~ «Cortinado curvilíneo», in the form of a caret «^», following the terminology proposed by [Sanz Lacorte, J.; 2007]. A second family of partitions originates at the centre of the shield. When their dividing lines are straight, the English terms «Party per chevron reversed» ~ «Mantelado en jefe» are used for a partition in the form of a «V» extending from the chief to the centre, whereas «Party per chevron» ~ «Mantelado en punta» designates a partition in the form of a caret «^» extending from the centre to the base, this latter being by far the most common of the partitions described here. Nevertheless, heraldic practice does not always follow this theoretical distinction. For example, the pomegranate representing the Kingdom of Granada in the arms of Spain is almost universally blazoned as «Enté en point» ~ «Entado en punta», although it is neither described as «Enté en point abased» ~ «Entado en punta caído» nor usually depicted as issuing from the exact centre of the shield, but rather from a noticeably lower position.

The question is: «Does Spain have a heraldic badge similar to how the British Isles have heraldic badges? I’ve found nothing so far for Spain except the Yoke and Arrows from the Catholic Monarchs»

Spain does not have badges, national insignias, equivalent to the badges of the British Isles, and this is not an absence or a gap, but rather the result of a different historical tradition.

In England and in the Anglo-British world, the badge developed as a personal and later territorial symbol, detached from the full coat of arms and easily reproducible. In the Hispanic Monarchy, by contrast, symbolic weight almost always rested on the coat of arms and on standards, not on simplified badges.

That said, if we accept badges in a functional sense, as a simple symbol that immediately refers to Spain, then the following can be stated:

• Indeed, the yoke and the arrows is a very characteristic symbol. It originates with the Catholic Monarchs and is derived from a crossed use of the initials of their names: the yoke with the Y of Ysabel (a contemporary spelling), and the arrows ~ «Flechas» with the F of Fernando. It is also commonly interpreted as symbolizing strength (the yoke) and unity (the bundle of arrows). The Gordian knot and the yoke are associated with Ferdinand; the Yoke uses the Y of Ysabel, his wife, and the arrows ~ «Flechas» are the symbol of Ysabel, using the F of her husband Ferdinand. It is a badge based on crossed symbolism.
• Ferdinand the Catholic also used the symbol of the Gordian knot cut with a sword, derived from the legend of Alexander the Great. This emblem is sometimes represented alongside the yoke and the arrows, although it was less widely used and less central, and it does not refer to Spain as strongly as the previous symbols.
• Later, Philip the Handsome, who was married to our Queen Joanna of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, introduced the Cross of Burgundy into the Spanish monarchy. It was used on military flags, for example by the Tercios. The Cross of Burgundy refers to Spain more clearly than the Gordian knot, but less so than the yoke and the arrows.
• Following the chronological order, we can consider the two Pillars of Hercules with their motto «Plus Ultra», introduced by the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, Emperor Charles. These two separate columns serve as the supporters of the coat of arms of Spain, and when they are joined and linked by the scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», they appear, for example, in decorations and on the coins known as «Reales de a Ocho» ~ «Spanish Dollars», which circulated across the globe and became the world monetary standard, functioning as the planet’s reserve currency during their period of predominance, occupying the position later held by the pound sterling and today by the United States dollar. These columns, interlaced with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra», immediately evoke Spain, and would be the most generally accepted badge.
• Finally, outside the royal and historical sphere, any badge featuring a black fighting bull ~ «toro bravo» in a defiant or noble stance will immediately refer to Spain for whoever sees it.

Other possibilities that come to mind are the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Cross of Santiago, both associated with their respective orders of chivalry, which could also function as a badge ~ «insignia». If one had to choose between them, I would undoubtedly choose the Cross of Santiago.

In summary:

• Formally, Spain does not have a badge ~ «insignia» in the British sense.
• Historically, it did have clear dynastic insignias, such as the yoke and the arrows of the Catholic Monarchs, but today they are scarcely usable.
• Functionally, I believe that the Pillars of Hercules, with or without crowns, entirely in silver, as I personally prefer, or with silver shafts and gold bases and capitals, preferably with water at the base to enhance the symbolism of the motto and linked by a scroll bearing that motto, are the best possible answer.
• At present, a newly created insignia incorporating a fighting bull refers to Spain, from anywhere in the world, in an almost unbeatable way.

A mug featuring the coat of arms and motto of Bárbaro Jonathan López Linares, Cuba, designed by him and emblazoned by me. My emblazonment was used to personalize this mug. The criterion is that the tinctures must remain consistent within the same interpretation of the arms. If I paint a version of this shield, I will use a single azure for the field and for the mantling, should I depict it; the same or for the three monstrances; and the same argent for the wolf and for the sacred hosts. But in a different interpretation, another azure may be used, provided that it is azure, as well as another or and another argent. The azure used by one artist does not bind the next; that is why we use terms such as azure, which means any blue except sky blue. If we were forced to use exactly the same azure in every interpretation of the same arms, we would have to blazon them, for example, with Pantone codes or RGB specifications, and that is not what we do. Tinctures are fixed in logos, but not in coats of arms; this is one of the reasons why coats of arms leave much more room for artistic expression than corporate logos.

The jaguar symbolizes power and agility and is native to the tropical forests of southern Mexico. Revered by ancient Mesoamerican cultures, it is the largest feline in the Americas and an apex predator known for its strength and stealth. Unlike the heraldic panther, the spots on its fur are not multicolored.

The motto of the bearer is «Prosequitur deinceps», meaning «press on» over the difficulties that are symbolised by a horse salient over static obstacles, the chevron, and moving ones, the waves of the sea; the horse leaps fearlessly from light, the Argent of the 2^nd quarter, to darkness, the Azure of the 1^st quarter.

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. In English, the shaft of the column is treated as the primary element, and the tinctures of the base and capital are then specified. The English term «debruised» is written in Castilian as «resaltado»; I usually write it as «debruised by» ~ «resaltado de», where the charge below is debruised by the one above. It is analogous to «charged by» ~ «cargado de», except that the upper charge projects beyond the surface of the lower one; in this case, parts of the stag project beyond the surface of the sun and the clouds. In English, «stag» corresponds to the Castilian «ciervo», although «deer» is occasionally found instead. When a stag's antlers are of a different tincture from its body, the English term is «attired»; in Castilian I prefer «ramado» to «arcornado». When the animal issues from the wreath, rather than standing upon it, I write «demi» in English and «saliente» in Castilian; «demi» is reminiscent of the Castilian prefix «semi». The leopards symbolize the family’s origin in Falaise, Normandy, as well as the nobility of heart to help those in need; their raised claw represents the ardor in striving to accomplish the proposed undertakings; their gaze forward stands for sincerity and honesty in daily actions; their walking in pair conveys the enduring unity of the family; and the gold of their skin reflects the purity of the soul, mirrored along the path of life. The Norman drakkar sailing westward symbolizes both the family’s journey to America in search of a new horizon and the quest for knowledge in science, technology, cosmology, theology, and the Universe itself. The oak acorns represent the Breton branch of the family and embody strength, perseverance, chivalry, kindness, loyalty, sacrifice, and faith. The motto proclaims that God may be our Master, Companion, and Guide, the Light along the path, and the Shield against adversity in life’s journey. The Cross of Lorraine honors Saint Joan of Arc, who bore it upon her standard.

The oak tree laden with acorns Or in the first quarter symbolizes the family's fertility. The oak and the domed tower in the second quarter, in their transformed forms, are elements from the coat of arms of the Simon lineage, which they represent. The third quarter derives from the arms of the Faus family and represents it. The plain cross in the fourth quarter is a symbol of Christ and of Aragon. The Latin motto reads: «Strong as Iron».

The symbols represent resilience over time, a bridge over the passage of waters. The design is simple and conceptual, a coat of arms without lines of divisions, and with only two tinctures, the color Sable of the field and the metal Or of the bridge and the waves of water. The motto «Patiens quia aeternus» ~ «Patient because eternal» comes from Augustine of Hippo and reinforces the meaning of this coat of arms.

The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. The Promet family are the founders and owners of Promet Restoration, a company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Their tradition began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 and later established in Seattle, Promet Restoration has since restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces. The company’s mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come» embodies both artistic integrity and respect for craftsmanship. The arms combine Estonian heraldic inspiration with the form of dovetail joints, a symbol of precision and enduring workmanship, as used in the crafting of pianos and fine furniture. This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. It should be noted that the tinctures of this «wavy» are not specified in the blazon. In the original painted representation of these arms, this sea appears Azure upon a field likewise Azure, with the crests of the waves heightened by an Argent highlight in the form of a circumflex accent «^». My interpretation follows the model of that original image, although I have emphasized the whole of the wave pattern slightly more, not merely the crests of the waves, so that it stands out more clearly against the Azure field.

In this case, my way of drafting the blazon in English and in Castilian is not exactly the same. In English, when a tincture is specified after several charges or ordinaries that have not yet been assigned one, that tincture applies to all the preceding elements concerned; here, Or applies both to the bend sinister and to the inescutcheon. In Castilian, on the other hand, I do not need to state expressly that the inescutcheon lies over the bend sinister. The bend sinister crosses the centre of the shield, while the inescutcheon, approximately one third of the width of the field, is itself placed centrally. A heraldic artist will therefore understand that the inescutcheon necessarily lies over the bend sinister. By its size and position, it cannot cover the triangle or the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which are placed in base. In the blazon, I specify in square brackets the origin of each part of the arms. In this case, the two halves have different origins: the dexter half is familial, indicated as «[for Adriaensen]», while the sinister half derives from a specific grant, indicated as «[granted by Bourbon-Parma]». I use these notes to distinguish clearly between inherited family arms and arms originating in a particular grant.

Canting arms of Jan Bobor, Slovakia, emblazoned under his directions. In heraldry, the word embattled is usually enough, and even more precise terms such as Ghibelline or swallow-tail crenellations already convey a distinctive image. Yet, in this case, what matters most is not the general heraldic convention, but the particular wish of the armiger. For him, the form of the crenellations is essential because it alludes directly to a specific historical castle: Zvolen Castle in central Slovakia, with its alternating swallow-tails and arched voids. To reflect that connection faithfully, the blazon could indeed be refined to read «a chief embattled of Ghibelline crenellations», or even more precisely, «…of alternating swallow-tails and arched voids».

Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

I have interpreted the coats of arms of the County of Cheshire produced by Martin Goldstraw with my own style, but I wished to preserve part of his in 2 of his most characteristic elements:

• his beautiful garbs ~ gavillas de trigo, which characterise the heraldry of the region and are present in the arms of this county, and
• his distinctive chevron, with a wider angle than the considered standard, almost necessary to leave space for the charges in many of the Cheshire shields.

Among the possible options of motto, device, mote and battle cry I have decided to classify «Ab Initio Goostrey» as a mote because it is not easy to understand without prior explanation. Martin Goldstraw's own biography provides this explanation when he states that his «interest in the heraldry of the County of Cheshire began when it became apparent that the origins of the surname Goldstraw lie in the surname of Goostrey». Goostrey is a small village in the county of Cheshire, of about 2,000 inhabitants, that was already a human settlement in the first millennium BC.

On the choice of language for the motto

The motto can be in any language. However, as a coat of arms is meant to last for eternity, living languages evolve, and the original meaning of the motto may be misinterpreted by future generations. For example, some words may eventually acquire unfortunate or inappropriate meanings over time. The advantage of dead languages, such as Latin, over living ones is that they do not evolve, and the meaning of the motto remains more resistant to the passage of time.

Its Latin motto «Prior tempore potior iure» means that whoever comes first in time has more right than whoever comes after, and naturally refers to the concept of registration, since, in general, the person who registers a coat of arms first has more right to defend its ownership than the person who registers the same coat of arms after the first.

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The motto over the coat of arms, «Oruganda Rw'Abahinda», means "Clan of Abahinda", and the motto below, «Abazira Nkyende», states that their totemic animal is the monkey. This coat of arms was renewed by the Clan under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and I have had the honour of refining and rendering its design. Harmonising the European rules of heraldry with African expressiveness is no easy task, yet it can yield great results.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».

Design rationale

The creation of these arms has been guided by Kevin Larkin's life journey, connecting Ballinasloe, Dublin, London, and Alicante. Drawing inspiration from the heraldry of Ballinasloe, the armiger's hometown, and Alicante, his current residence, the design reflects significant elements from both places. Ballinasloe's arms feature a triple-towered castle, symbolizing the O Ceallaigh's historic stronghold and the area's legal traditions. Similarly, Alicante's arms prominently display a triple-towered castle, making it a natural unifying element for the design. The wavy lines represent the River Suck and River Shannon in Ireland above, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Adopting a traditional Spanish style for the arms aligns with Mr. Larkin's life in Spain, embracing its rich heraldic heritage and distinctive artistic symbolism.
