Coat of arms of the King Alfonso X of Castile, 1221–1284, 1^st son of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. The order of the quarters is first the castle of his grandmother, Queen Berenguela of Castile, and second the lion of his grandfather, King Alfonso IX of León; however, the other day I discovered that on the map by [Martineau du Plessis, D.; 1700; volume II, illustration 30, page 126], in the shield framed between parallels 37 and 36 and meridians 21 and 22, the lion occupies the 1^st quarter and the castle the 2^nd quarter; that is, their order appears reversed.

The federschwert, feder sword, or «feather sword» translated from German, is a training sword developed in the late 15^th century and used during the 16^th century in Renaissance fencing schools. Its design allowed safe and realistic practice, reducing the risk of serious injuries while preserving the handling of a real sword. Today it remains in use within Historical European Martial Arts, combining historical fidelity with safety.

Arms of the King of Leon and Queen of Castile, as interpreted by me with: the two shields shaped with rounded arches; the fields of both coat of arms, the lion, and the castle illuminated; and the whole composition featuring a watercolor finish.

Representation of the coats of arms of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile as accolé arms ~ «escudos acolados». King Ferdinand III created his coat of arms, based on the coats of arms of his parents, through the marshalling of their arms ~ «composición de sus armas». For this purpose, the saintly king invented a type of composition, which later became widely used, known as quarterly ~ «cuartelado». Other ways to combine the coats of arms of two spouses are:

Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1279, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

The illustration brings together two different aspects. On the one hand, the photograph captures the moment in which I explain the coat of arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, during one of my heraldic art exhibitions, pointing directly to its components while the audience observes. On the other hand, it shows the coat of arms of Charles V as painted by me. All the works visible in the image have been created by me. In this exhibition, I combined the presentation of my coats of arms with a live music concert featuring works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Komitas, and Carlos Gardel.

Coat of arms of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II emblazoned by me. Saint Edward Crown, the fundamental piece used in the anointing ceremony of British monarchs, was reconstructed in 1661 after the Restoration. This crown is distinguished by its four depressed or downward-curving arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. Like the Tudor, its arches, adorned with pearls, converge at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. The crown's base is lined with ermine, and the cap or inner lining is traditionally represented in Purpure. It is the heaviest piece among the Crown Jewels and its use is reserved exclusively for the culminating moment of the coronation. The main visual difference between Saint Edward Crown and the Tudor Crown lies in their arches: Saint Edward Crown features depressed arches or downward curves, and its inner cap is typically represented in Purpure. Banner interpreted by me as follows: its shape preserves the 5x6 proportions of a shield; the field is enamelled with flat tinctures Gules and Azure; the castles, fleurs-de-lis, and leopards are outlined in Sable; but the lions are outlined in their field; and the finish of the banner is watercoloured.

I have interpreted it from a simplification of the banner appearing in [Edward IV of England; 1461; row 27, 1^st column, final banner], which reflects Edward IV’s aspirations to the throne of Castile and León. In that armorial, this banner is held by a «White Lion of March», which was the personal badge of Edward IV.

A symbolic image representing, through 3 coats of arms, the creation of the coat of arms of the King Ferdinand III the Saint from the arms of Alfonso IX, King of León, and Berenguela, Queen of Castile. The shapes of all three shields are rounded; all their components are illuminated; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

Ferdinand III the Saint was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. During his reign, the crowns of Castile and León were united forever. When, in 1230, Ferdinand III succeeded his father, he adopted a quarterly coat of arms, placing his mother's arms, the castle, in the 1^st and 4^th quarters, and his father's arms, the lion, in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters. His goal was likely to achieve balance between the two kingdoms and to give his coat of arms a greater sense of continuity over time compared to impaled arms. The coat of arms of Ferdinand III the Saint was the first quarterly shield in history, and the idea spread into the heraldry of Spain and other kingdoms, such as Aragon-Sicily, Brabant, England, Navarre, and Bohemia.

Fernando II, King of León, «Carta Puebla de Benavente», Historical Archive of the City Council of Benavente, dated November 1167.

It is a document in which King Fernando II of León grants privileges to Benavente with the aim of repopulating this town.

The original document is a parchment measuring 60 x 43 centimeters, adorned in the upper right corner, right according to the heraldic criterion, with a Chi Rho from which hang an alpha and an omega. In what could be considered the navel of the charter is a rolled seal of the king formed by a lion, which I consider closer to rampant than passant, surrounded by a circular motto that reads «Signum Fernandi Regis Hispanorum» ~ «Sign of Fernando, King of the Spains». Additionally, this rolled seal is accompanied by the names of members of the chancery and prelates of the Kingdom of León, to confirm the grants recorded in the «Carta Puebla de Benavente».

This charter, also called the «Fuero de Benavente», is a beautiful example of local law and, since its promulgation in 1167, served as a model for other towns. In the following years, similar charters to that of Benavente were adopted in other towns of León, Asturias, and Galicia, with the one in La Coruña being a notable example.

The objective of the provisions of this charter was to favor the repopulation and settlement of new settlers in the town of Benavente, and its successful operation in this aspect led to its application in other places.

The original document is kept in the Municipal Archive of Benavente, forming part of its collection of royal privileges of Benavente. There is also a «facsimile» edition, like the one that illustrates this bibliographic reference, published in 2002 by the Benavente City Council on the occasion of the Commemoration of the VIII Centenary of the Benavente Courts.

Existing armories interpreted by me as follows: the shape of the shield is pointed; the field has been enameled in flat azure; the 6 lions are illuminated and cast shadows on the field; and the entire composition has a hammered metal finish.

The shield of Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou is considered the first documented coat of arms in history, dated to 1127, when Henry I of England gifted it to him on the occasion of his marriage to his daughter Matilda of England [The Heraldry Society; 2013].

There is no direct evidence that Henry I possessed a coat of arms, nor that it featured a rampant lion [Humphery-Smith, C.; 1983], but the gift of a shield with 6 lions to his future son-in-law could be an indication of such.

Geoffrey is buried in the Cathedral of Saint Julian in Le Mans, and his tomb is decorated with an enamel depicting him with his shield, where of his 6 lions: 4 are fully visible, and 2 are suggested by their claws.

However, it is possible that both the wedding gift narrative and the enamel on the tomb are from years after his death in 1151, so [Pastoureau, M.; Garvie, F.; 1997; page 18] asserts that «this account was written after Geoffrey's death... and his funerary enamel commissioned by his widow Matilda between 1155 and 1160... therefore it is possible that Geoffrey Plantagenet never had a coat of arms».

It is believed that Henry I was the first King of England to have a coat of arms, featuring a single lion rampant, but no documentary evidence has yet been found [Rabbow, A.; 1999; paragraph 8].

[Ailes, A.; 1982; page 62] argues that Henry II may have used three different versions of his arms featuring a) a single lion rampant, b) two leopards, and c) three leopards. However, it remains unclear whether these versions were used sequentially over time or concurrently. For this interpretation, I have chosen the version with the lion rampant.

In Castile, a coat of arms quarterly does not necessarily signify inheritance. This schema illustrates two practices: a) Quarterings can represent the mother in the 1^st and 4^th quarters and the father in the 2^nd and 3^rd, highlighting the prominence given to the maternal line by placing it in the most visible quarters. b) Quarterings can also include personal symbols and concepts, like canting arms, for example, «Manuel» =«mano» + «ala» = «hand» + «wing», combined with ancestral arms. This flexibility reflects Castilian heraldic traditions, where arms are not strictly marshalled by inheritance. The inclusion of maternal arms in the 1^st and 4^th quarters highlights how Castilian heraldry often elevates maternal heritage, differing from some other heraldic traditions. The arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain emblazoned by me. Francisco Domingo Larrosa Gil reminds me that in the original design, the pearls in the center of the crown's rosettes of acanthus leaves were always painted white, as were the pearls interspersed between these rosettes. However, recently, they have been colored azure. For instance, in the Official State Gazette, BOE of Spain, of June 21, 2014, which established the guidon and the banner of His Majesty King Felipe VI, the interior of the fleurons is colored azure, so much so that they assign it Pantone blue P-301. As we know, assigning Pantones makes no sense heraldically. In this version, I paint as pearls both those in the center of the rosettes and those interspersed between them. The definition provided by the Royal Household does not specify what lies in the center of the fleurons, which could potentially be empty; thus, the Royal Household states: «a closed crown, which is a circle of gold, with an inset of precious stones in their colours, composed of eight rosettes of acanthus leaves, of which five are visible, interspersed with pearls in their own colour, issuing from which are eight pearl diadems, of which five are visible, which converge in a blue orb, with gold semi-meridian and equator, surmounted by a gold cross, the crown lined with red», in my blazon, I limit myself to defining it as a closed royal crown.
