Depending on heraldic traditions, the mantling can be of one colour doubled with a metal, or of several colours and metals. When it is decided to design it in a single colour doubled with a metal, a good rule, though not obligatory, is that the mantling be of the first colour and the first metal named in the blazon. There could be another colour or metal more relevant depending on the case, but this rule often gives good results. So in this case, applying this rule, the mantling is «Vert doubled Argent», since vert and argent are the first colour and metal named in the blazon: «Quarterly: 1 per pale: 1 Argent, a madrone tree (Arbutus unedo) Vert,...». The mantling is filled with my own hand-drawn diapering pattern, which I call «chinapieria», a word my mother used when she saw me drawing this kind of doodle as a young man, each motif drawn individually so that no two repeat exactly the same.

The Society of Heraldic Arts used to publish a quarterly magazine called «The Heraldic Craftsman», which was sent to all its members, but it is no longer in publication. The Society also provides advice on the correct use of heraldry to enhance corporate and personal identity.

In Spanish heraldry, there are three terms for supporters: «sostenes» for objects or plants, «tenantes» for human figures, and «soportes» for animal forms. The following applies to sostenes, tenantes, and soportes. Unlike other heraldic traditions such as English heraldry, in Spanish heraldry there are no rules for the use of supporters; their use is at the armiger's discretion, without specific restrictions. Supporters are not reserved only for nobility; their use is free for all.

In the words of [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 173] «there is no rule that determines the use of tenantes, soportes, and sostenes».

In the 2^nd quarter, a trimount color Vert can be seen on a field color Gules, that is, color on color. In many heraldic traditions, a trimount color Vert should not be placed on a field color Gules. However, this is not universal; for example, the arms of Slovakia display a trimount color Azure on a field color Gules. There are other differences between heraldic traditions: in Polish heraldry, for instance, Sable is not regarded as a color but as a neutral tincture, neither metal nor color, and may therefore be placed upon color Gules. These arms, granted by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta to Alessandro Giannelli and Mariana von Atzingen Gorga, belong to an Italian marriage, and similar combinations can be found in the Italian heraldic tradition. One example is the arms of the family of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the novel on which Luchino Visconti's film Il Gattopardo is based. The heraldic beast that gave its name to both the novel and the film is itself shown above a trimount color Vert on a field color Azure: «D'azzurro al leopardo d'oro, illeonito, sostenuto da un monte di tre cime di verde cucito». The heraldic term «cucito», literally «sewn», equivalent to the French heraldic term «cousu», also in English, indicates precisely that a color has been placed upon another color. Some heraldists use this term and others do not. I personally like to use it because it makes clear that one is fully aware of the breach of this rule. In this case, for this particular blazon, I have followed more closely the terminology published for the grant in The Malta Government Gazette and have therefore not used the term «cousu» in the text of the blazon.
