Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

The jaguar symbolizes power and agility and is native to the tropical forests of southern Mexico. Revered by ancient Mesoamerican cultures, it is the largest feline in the Americas and an apex predator known for its strength and stealth. Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1279, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

Coat of arms of Crepsi, military psychology, former Central Military Region, Kingdom of Spain, where I was stationed during my military service. These arms were designed by my lieutenant colonel and friend Miguel Angel Nuñez Amador, and in this image, they have been emblazoned by me. The Crepsi was a pioneer in its functions: a) the identification of soldiers at psychological risk, among tens of thousands of soldiers, using advanced information systems, including Artificial Intelligence (an area where I contributed during my service in 1989), and b) the evaluation and individualized attention of soldiers at risk through mobile units. The Crepsi has provided trained personnel and methods that are being used for the psychological care of troops deployed to conflict zones and for the psychological care of civilians in massive humanitarian disasters such as terrorist attacks or plane crashes with hundreds of affected people.

Design rationale

The name «heron» matchs with their family name is Herndon. This is why they are called canting arms, where an element in the coat of arms resembles or sounds like the name of the bearer. For the same reason, in Spanish heraldry, some García family coats of arms feature a heron, «garza» in Spanish. The motto «Sic itur ad astra» comes from Virgil's Aeneid IX 641, where it is spoken by Apollo to Aeneas's young son Iulus, and it translates to «Thus one journeys to the stars».

The coat of arms of Markus Hermann Frank features a Franconian Rake, a heraldic reference to his surname, making this a case of canting arms. The Franconian Rake is the historical emblem of the Franconia region in Germany, traditionally blazoned as per fess dancetty of three points Gules and Argent. He is a Medical Doctor and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, which is reflected in the two fleams, surgical instruments historically used in medicine.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

This is the coat of arms of Her Royal Highness Doña Leonor Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, and Princess of Viana, heiress of the throne of Spain as the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. This version of her coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The coat of arms of the Princess of Asturias is the same as her father's, the King, but with a mark of cadency which, in heraldic terms, is also know as brisure. In this case, the cadency mark is a label Azure with three points, which will be removed in due course. The label of three points is the main and most classic of the brisures, usually assigned to the eldest heir. It is said to originate from a piece of cloth the son would tie at the top of his shield to distinguish it from his father's. Other common brisures include the crescent, the mullet of five point, the marlet, the annulet, or the fleur de lis. In addition to these simple brisures, there are also combined brisures, which are brisures charged with another or others. For example, a crescent charged with a fleur de lis. Labels may also have their points charged with other marks. Many cadency systems become more complicated as generations progress and branches open up, so they tend to be rarely used except in very clear cases like this one.

The coat of arms of the Marquis Prato di Arnesano, requested by Andrea Tamburelli Lanzara and painted by me. When a field is charged with 3 pallets, it results in 7 vertical areas: 4 belong to the field, 1 on the dexter, 2 between the pallets, and 1 on the sinister, and 3 correspond to the pallets themselves. In most cases, and especially in the present one, it is ideal that these 7 areas be of equal width. This allows me to apply a fur pattern like vair using a 7 columns structure, with 7 little bells of vair in the chief, so that each pallet contains the same vair arrangement. In this case, for greater harmony, I have also arranged the vair in 7 rows, although this is not required. The figure illustrates this concept.

The House of Noronha originated with Alfonso Enríquez of Castile, Count of Noreña and Gijón, the natural son of King Henry II of Castile, founder of the Trastámara dynasty, and of Elvira Íñiguez. In Castilian heraldic tradition, the «adiestrado» ~ «tierce» used in this coat of arms and its symmetrical «siniestrado» ~ «tierce sinister» are «irregular divisions of the field by one line» ~ «particiones irregulares». That is why I use «tierce» and «tierce sinister» in English. There is another possibility, which is to call the «adiestrado» ~ «pale in dexter flank» and the «siniestrado» ~ «pale in sinister flank», thus ceasing to be a type of «divisions of the field» ~ «particiones» and becoming «ordinaries» ~ «piezas fundamentales». These are canting arms because her surname is «Peregrina» ~ «pilgrim», and her coat of arms depicts the arm of a pilgrim, as she is one herself, with her staff and her gourd for carrying water, advancing towards the dexter, in order to reach the destination of her three most important life pilgrimages: Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem.
