Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1279, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

Design rationale

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

The hurt represents what is known as the Good Raft, a symbol of the town and its people, it is a circular cistern of 40 meters in diameter of Roman origin, and the Maltese cross is a symbol of its connection since 1188 to the Royal Monastery of Sijena of Hospitaller nuns of the Order Malta.

Coat of arms of Alejandra Espeja Avieda designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and emblazoned by me. Blazoning specific, real-world objects in coats of arms should be avoided. Therefore, in the blazon I describe «four bell towers». However, in this case, for artistic reasons, to echo the elongated form of the four pallets Gules, and due to the origin of the bearer, I depict four bell towers inspired by those on the Nativity Façade of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família in Barcelona. Additionally, I initially blazoned the arrangement of the 4 bell towers as «in fess» ~ «en faja», as, from a heraldic perspective, this term accurately describes their horizontal alignment next to each other across the field. However, I observed that this term, far from clarifying the design, caused confusion among some viewers. The naturally vertical shape of a bell tower, its default position, is «palewise» ~ «puesta en palo», so using «in fess» ~ «en faja» led many to assume that I intended to lay the bell towers on their sides. Although the original description was heraldically correct, I decided to remove the mention of «in fess» ~ «en faja» for being unnecessary and clearly counterproductive. As the towers are «issuant from base» ~ «movientes de la punta», their placement in a horizontal row is sufficiently implied, thus avoiding misunderstandings and maintaining the clarity of the blazon. It is important to remember that «in fess» ~ «en faja» refers to how multiple elements are aligned with each other (in a horizontal row), while «palewise» ~ «puesto en palo» describes the individual orientation of an element (in a vertical position).

He bore his father's arms, replacing the lion Purpure of the Kingdom of León with a cross flory Purpure, likely due to his close association with the Order of Calatrava, whose emblem is a cross flory Gules. The image above shows the historical illustration as it appears in the «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast, 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Königlich-Bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26, Opvallend zijn de onmiskenbare verwijzingen naar het verblijf in de West», which can be consulted on the website juchtervanbergenquast.wordpress.com and below is my current interpretation of this coat of arms. In heraldry there are two kinds of tinctures: colours, for example Gules, Azure, and Sable, and metals, Or and Argent. There is also a heraldic rule of tinctures that states not colour on colour and not metal on metal. The vambraced arm was originally Azure over a Gules field, which is colour on colour and against the rule. I corrected it with the family’s permission by changing the vambraced arm to Argent, so now it is metal Argent on colour Gules, which is correct, and Argent is a good tincture for armory. For this reason, I also used Argent for the helm and for the tips of the tournament spear. The flags also show colour on colour, but they are decorative details and not important, and changing their colours would alter the ship’s nationality, which must remain as it is. It is possible that the Azure we now see originated from the fact that the arm vambraced , the spearheads, and the helm were originally depicted as iron or proper and that over the course of time this natural greyish tone gradually turned into Azure.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is inspired by the concept of the «lattice formed by the stars» described in the Books of Chilam Balam, pre-Columbian texts of the Yucatec Maya tradition that combine history, cosmology, religion, and astronomy. In this symbolic framework, the ordered network of mullets represents a sacred and intelligible universe, a cosmic structure through which the divine contemplates the world with wisdom. The semé and interlaced arrangement of the mullets visually translates this idea of a stellar lattice into heraldic form.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

The coat of arms of Reverend John Stuart, XVIII century, emblazoned by me in 3 approaches: 1) Classic bordure: Using a bordure with a width equal to 1/6 of the coat of arms' base. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Vert. Notice that the squares in columns 2 and 8 are split by the inner border of the bordure, which is unfortunate as it disrupts the design. 2) Diminished bordure: Using a narrower bordure with a width equal to 2/3 of the classic bordure, corresponding to 1 square of the fess chequey. In the image, this is marked with texts and lines in Gules. This approach avoids splitting any squares, allows for larger figures, and is my preferred solution. In England, diminished bordures, often simply blazoned as bordure, are more common than in Castile. 3) Without squares splitted: Retaining the classic bordure but shifting the fess chequey 1/2 square to either dexter or sinister to prevent splitting squares. However, this sacrifices the symmetry of the design. This last adjustment was used in the hatchment of Reverend John Stuart in St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, 1785.

Design rationale

In Spanish heraldry, the use of bordures is often a matter of personal preference, in this case, the tinctures and charges on this bordure compony are a proud emblem of the bearer's origins from Utrera, Seville, the white represents the local architecture, the green symbolizes the olive groves, and the bull's head denotes Utrera as the cradle of the brave bull, a reference, along with the castle, to the arms of his town. The Latin motto tells us, «Honor and Truth Always at the Forefront».

Heraldically, such continuity is not required, but artistically it makes much more sense. For this reason, in this case, I chose to prioritize the artistic criterion of continuity, even if the second quarter ends with a small strip of Argent instead of finishing in Azure.

The arms of Kevin Larkin from Ireland and Spain, designed and emblazoned by me. In heraldry, the rule of tinctures states «no color on color, no metal on metal». This means a castle metal Argent cannot bear a castel metal Or as a charge. However, in this design, the castle is divided party per pale, vertically, into Argent and Or. This division allows both metals to coexist, as each metal occupies one side of the charge without violating the tincture rule. Similarly, in a party field, both quarters can be of the same type, either color or metal, making this design heraldically correct.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

The field is Gules with charges of Or, as in the coats of arms of the lineages Asuncion and de la Asuncion and lineage Patus. In both lineages, there are three well-ordered Or elements, 2 and 1. My experience is that if shield shapes are named after countries, this creates problems in an international context. For example, if the shield with a rounded base is called a «Spanish shield», sooner or later someone will point out that the same shape is also used in Portugal, Hungary, or Poland, making it not exclusively Spanish. For this reason, I avoid assigning shield shapes names based on countries or kingdoms and instead give them names that describe their formal characteristics, which is not always easy. For example, I call the «semi-circular shield» in English and «escudo de medio punto» in Castilian to the commonly referred as «Spanish», or the «ogee shield» one that ends in an inverted ogee arch, «conopial» in Castilian. Despite this, at some point, breaking my own rule, I used the term «Bantu» to refer to the almond-shaped shield, only to be quickly corrected and informed of its connection to other African kingdoms. My mistake was not using the name I had always given it: «mandorla» in Castilian and «vesica piscis» in English.
