Design rationale

Teamwork navigating towards a common goal (lymphad with sail and oars), keeping trade secrets (book with clasps), and solidity in support and growth (linden). The motto «Ubi concordia ibi victoria» means «Where there is unity, there is victory». It conveys the idea that success arises from harmony and collaboration between the team and its clients, working together toward shared goals.

This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Couling (United Kingdom), and emblazoned by me (Spain). The arms reflect the heritage of the Alyahya family, descendants of the ancient tribe of Beno Tamim (Altamimi) and linked to the modern origins of Saudi Arabia. These arms exemplify how modern heraldry operates on a global scale, the process involved several countries: a design originating in Italy following the instructions of the armiger in Saudi Arabia, revised by experts in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and rendered by me in Spain, it serves as an example of international collaboration within the field. In English I use the word «motto», but in Spanish I usually use the word «lema»; however, when the text identifies the armiger, as in this case, I use the word «divisa».

The armorial [Urfé; 15^th century] contains only blazons written in French and is not decorated with shields.

The image shows my interpretation of the arms and, beneath it, the blazon of the king of Navarre as follows «Le Roy de Navarre... de gueles à l'escarboucle d'or pommelée alumée de sinoble en la moyenne en guise d'esmeraude» which could be translated as «The King of Navarre... Gules, a carbuncle Or pommetty, illuminated Vert in the middle in the manner of an emerald».

Note that the blazon does not suggest the presence of an emerald, but that the place corresponding to the central boss of the shield, from which the rays of the carbuncle emerge, is enamelled Vert.

In the article Universitas Studiorum Navarrensis about the arms of the University of Navarre I interpret the arms of Navarre borne in profile by the Archangel Saint Michael, which, by my way of painting it, lies halfway between the carbuncle and the chains, with round chain links and long carbuncle rays, where at the centre there is no emerald, but a Vert enamel in the manner of an emerald.

Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

Rif War, July 23, 1921, banks of the Igan River, North Africa

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

For the division operation, instead of using the piece bend sinister, 2 bezants Or in pale could have been used. However, since the bezant is a diminished piece, I preferred to use 4 pieces, one for each quarter.

Design rationale

The fox refers to the clever and resourceful character attributed to the armiger’s family. The federschwert evokes his dedication to Historical European Martial Arts, in particular the German school of Liechtenauer and the long sword. The oak leaves have a double meaning: they symbolize nature and spirituality, linked to his belonging to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and being nine in number they allude to his Irish heritage and the legendary figure of Niall of the Nine Hostages. His ancestry includes Irish, English and German roots, the latter once again connected to the sword. The motto translates as «Clever, Caring, Witty».

Historical origin

The coat of arms of Jean-Philippe Sendat reflects his lineage, tradition, and family symbolism, as described below.

His family coat of arms dates back to 1667 and is associated with the former Barony of Sendat. This coat of arms includes lions quartered in the style of Castile and León, and, as a crest, a lion.

The 6 scallop shells, pilgrim's shells, represent the connection to the Camino de Santiago, as pilgrims were hosted in the family castle.

Jean-Philippe Sendat, as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, is granted the privilege of adorning his coat of arms with a Count Palatine crown.

This crown is composed of 4 large pearls, 3 of which are visible, alternated with 4 groups of smaller pearls, of which 2 are visible.

According to the heraldic rules of the order, this crown symbolizes the tradition of Pontifical nobility and spiritual proximity to the Holy See.

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. In other case it appears to rest purely on the whims of the title-holder. This is the coat of arms of Her Royal Highness Doña Leonor Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, and Princess of Viana, heiress of the throne of Spain as the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. This version of her coat of arms has been emblazoned by me. The coat of arms of the Princess of Asturias is the same as her father's, the King, but with a mark of cadency which, in heraldic terms, is also know as brisure. In this case, the cadency mark is a label Azure with three points, which will be removed in due course. The label of three points is the main and most classic of the brisures, usually assigned to the eldest heir. It is said to originate from a piece of cloth the son would tie at the top of his shield to distinguish it from his father's. Other common brisures include the crescent, the mullet of five point, the marlet, the annulet, or the fleur de lis. In addition to these simple brisures, there are also combined brisures, which are brisures charged with another or others. For example, a crescent charged with a fleur de lis. Labels may also have their points charged with other marks. Many cadency systems become more complicated as generations progress and branches open up, so they tend to be rarely used except in very clear cases like this one.

The arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain emblazoned by me. Francisco Domingo Larrosa Gil reminds me that in the original design, the pearls in the center of the crown's rosettes of acanthus leaves were always painted white, as were the pearls interspersed between these rosettes. However, recently, they have been colored azure. For instance, in the Official State Gazette, BOE of Spain, of June 21, 2014, which established the guidon and the banner of His Majesty King Felipe VI, the interior of the fleurons is colored azure, so much so that they assign it Pantone blue P-301. As we know, assigning Pantones makes no sense heraldically. In this version, I paint as pearls both those in the center of the rosettes and those interspersed between them. The definition provided by the Royal Household does not specify what lies in the center of the fleurons, which could potentially be empty; thus, the Royal Household states: «a closed crown, which is a circle of gold, with an inset of precious stones in their colours, composed of eight rosettes of acanthus leaves, of which five are visible, interspersed with pearls in their own colour, issuing from which are eight pearl diadems, of which five are visible, which converge in a blue orb, with gold semi-meridian and equator, surmounted by a gold cross, the crown lined with red», in my blazon, I limit myself to defining it as a closed royal crown.

The figure illustrates my construction scheme outlined with my main proportions for the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain. The scheme is conceptually divided into three horizontal rectangles of equal height: the first one dedicated to the Royal Crown, the second to the quarters of Castile and and Leon, and the third rectangle to the quarters of Aragon and Navarre. The width of the central inescutcheon is defined as 1/3 of the total shield width. The curve of the enté en point of Granada is designed such that the resulting shapes in the quarter for Aragon and the quarter for Navarre are symmetrical, evoking the form of a pointed shield.

Design rationale

The matrimonial and family arms of Darryn Carlo of the Commonwealth of Australia and longtime resident of the Kingdom of Spain, and Roberto Luchoro of the Kingdom of Spain, who were married in Madrid represents their lives together over nearly two decades cumulating in their union in marriage. The elements from their arms of the most significant places associated with their lives to date are as follows: The field of Vert from the arms of Darryn's hometown of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Australia, also represents Roberto's service in the Spanish armed forces and the Guardia Civil. The castle, taken from the arms of Alicante and Talavera de la Reina, represents Roberto’s birthplace and the city where both of them lived for a time. The Merino ram’s head also comes from Wagga Wagga. The Gules of the port and windows in the castle is a reference to the field of Gules in the arms of Talavera de la Reina. The two wolves are taken from the arms of the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country where the couple met and lived for many years and the seven stars are taken from the flag and arms of the region and city of Madrid where they currently live and work. The tinctures of Vert, Argent and Gules, shown in the port and windows of the castle, are also a hint to where they spent their honeymoon. The language of the motto, Latin, was chosen to represent the shared Latin heritage of the couple. The meaning of the motto «Amor Non Timet» is a powerful statement in itself and represents the strength of the commitment, the love and bond shared between them.

Emblem interpreted by me as follows: an oval shape with proportions 5x6, wider than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges outlined in Sable and illuminated in the colours Gules and Vert and the metals Argent and Or; the Archangel Saint Michael vested in Or, unlike others who appear in Argent; his emerald simplified into an area enameled Vert; and the whole emblem has a lightly beaten metal finish.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.

The internal structure of this design is that the lion's forepaws fall below the center of the dexter heart, the central vertical axis passing through the center of the Star of David runs between the lion's eyes, and the tip of the tail falls below the center of the sinister heart.
