Design rationale

Teamwork navigating towards a common goal (lymphad with sail and oars), keeping trade secrets (book with clasps), and solidity in support and growth (linden). The motto «Ubi concordia ibi victoria» means «Where there is unity, there is victory». It conveys the idea that success arises from harmony and collaboration between the team and its clients, working together toward shared goals.

The federschwert, feder sword, or «feather sword» translated from German, is a training sword developed in the late 15^th century and used during the 16^th century in Renaissance fencing schools. Its design allowed safe and realistic practice, reducing the risk of serious injuries while preserving the handling of a real sword. Today it remains in use within Historical European Martial Arts, combining historical fidelity with safety.

Badge of the Household of His Majesty the King Felipe VI of Spain emblazoned by me. According to the official description, it consists of a brass oval whose major axis, in vertical position, measures 35 millimetres in length and whose minor axis measures 30 millimetres. The obverse is enamelled in crimson and surrounded by a gilded border one millimetre wide along its entire perimeter. In this case, crimson is not treated as a heraldic tincture, but merely as a chromatic description.

Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

Another noteworthy bibliographic reference about this armorial, in addition to those previously mentioned, is [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 2001].

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

I have made this imaginary coat of arms for the Arithmetic with the following characteristics: a semicircular external shape; its enamelled field with flat color Azure and Vert inks; all the pieces are metal Or, the motto is metal Argent with Sable letters; pieces and motto are illuminated and outlined in Sable; and the whole with a very lightly beaten metal finish.

For the division operation, instead of using the piece bend sinister, 2 bezants Or in pale could have been used. However, since the bezant is a diminished piece, I preferred to use 4 pieces, one for each quarter.

Tongues out

This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.

In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.

However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.

The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].

From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.

On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.

Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].

Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.

But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.

[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.

The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.

Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.

Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].

The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.

In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].

Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

This is the coat of arms of Abdulelah Alyahya (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), designed by Vittorio Gifra (Italy) under his instructions, revised by Bob Juchter van Bergen Quast (Netherlands) and Kevin D. Couling (United Kingdom), and emblazoned by me (Spain). The arms reflect the heritage of the Alyahya family, descendants of the ancient tribe of Beno Tamim (Altamimi) and linked to the modern origins of Saudi Arabia. Csernely is a village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in Hungary.

The official description, not the blazon, is: «...in the blue field of a shield standing on its snout two silver-coloured church towers with onion-shaped cupolas and crosses on their peaks are rising on a green hill. Between them a silver ploughshare is floating with its point upside down...».

The official description use the word «hagymakupolás» in Hungarian. The official text is «Csernely címere: Csücsköstalpú pajzs kék mezejében zöld halmon két ezüst színu, hagymakupolás templomtorony emelkedik, ...», but the cupolas painted by them do not seem the classic «onion-shaped cupolas».

Notice the mount color Vert over a field color Azure, not uncommon in this heraldic tradition.

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. In some cases, this may be due to the fact that some holders of Maltese titles of foreign origins, opt to follow the heraldic rules of the country which granted the original title. The coat of arms of Iker Lanzagorta Ochoa, designer, and manufacturer of wooden furniture. This coat of arms has been designed by him, his father Juan Lanzagorta Vallín, and me, and emblazoned by me. An interesting heraldic discussion arose from this design. Someone suggested that two metal charges placed in saltire violate the rule of tincture because one metal lies over another. However, two charges arranged in saltire necessarily intersect and touch. Colouring one charge to avoid metal on metal would simply create a colour-on-colour problem against the field. This illustrates that the rule of tincture cannot be interpreted in such a purely mechanical way.

Design rationale

Kathleen Kane's three recent matrilineal ancestors were all named after the Irish Saint Brigid of the 5^th and 6^th centuries. With the time, this saint added to her own story some of the characteristics of her namesake, the earlier Celtic goddess of water, poetry, and the alchemical force of fire. She is one of the patron saints of Ireland and her Feast Day is February 1^st.

These three women were formidable characters: resilient, resourceful, and independent. Each inspired their daughters to follow in their footsteps, reflecting the attributes associated with Saint Brigid, an icon of strength, piety, resourcefulness, and independence. They are symbolized by the three crosses of Saint Brigid.

Saint Brigid's Crosses, woven from straw or rushes and blessed, are traditionally hung in the rafters or beams of the house to ensure the saint's protection throughout the year for all household members. This symbolism connects the matrilineal ancestors with the home and the protection of the family, which, according to the motto, is everything.

The four leaves of the Silver Leaved Whitebeam represent Kathleen's four children. The interlaced stems symbolize the union of the family and their home in Dún Laoghaire, outside of which this tree grows.

The 1^st schema shows how to split a square to create a rectangle with a ratio of 5/6 between its width and height. The 2^nd schema shows how to split it again to create a rectangle with a ratio of 5/8 between its width and height. I use this 5/8 ratio to paint the coat of arms of Ugnius Mikučionis-Vizgirda. In the 1^st step, I must use the 2 main diagonal to find the center of the square, but I ommit both in the schema to make cleaner. I employ constructive geometry also known straightedge and compass construction, or ruler-and-compass construction or classical construction, that means this kind of pure geometry do not use measures, of course, you can use measures. These heraldic geometric constructions provide to the heraldic art with a more robust mathematical support.

Emblem interpreted by me as follows: an oval shape with proportions 5x6, wider than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges outlined in Sable and illuminated in the colours Gules and Vert and the metals Argent and Or; the Archangel Saint Michael vested in Or, unlike others who appear in Argent; his emerald simplified into an area enameled Vert; and the whole emblem has a lightly beaten metal finish.

Due to its special characteristics, the difficulty in complying with the first rule of heraldry concerning metals and colours, and out of prudence, I categorize it as an emblem rather than a shield.

In a relief of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Estella, Saint Michael can be seen fighting a dragon that represents the devil, in a similar but mirrored arrangement to that of this emblem. In that relief, the Archangel Saint Michael bears a pre-heraldic shield with its umbo. According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1963], the umbo of the shield is a reinforcing element that is the predecessor of what would later become the pommelly carbuncle of the shield of the Kingdom of Navarre.
