Armories of the Wise King of Castile interpreted by me with the following characteristics: the external shape of the coat of arms ends in an ogee arch; the field, the 2 castles, and the 2 lions are outlined and enameled in flat colors; and the texture seems fabric.

This coat of arms, but with a pointed external shape, can be seen in the 2^nd part of the so-called armorial [Wijnbergen; 1265; cuat of arms number 1,289], with the title «Le roy Despaingne», which in this context is understood to refer to Castilla y León.

The 2^nd part of this armorial was made between 1270 and 1285 and, being Alphonse X king of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284, it is to Him that the title «Le roy Despaingne» seems to refer.

Arms of the King of Leon and Queen of Castile, as interpreted by me with: the two shields shaped with rounded arches; the fields of both coat of arms, the lion, and the castle illuminated; and the whole composition featuring a watercolor finish.

Representation of the coats of arms of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile as accolé arms ~ «escudos acolados». King Ferdinand III created his coat of arms, based on the coats of arms of his parents, through the marshalling of their arms ~ «composición de sus armas». For this purpose, the saintly king invented a type of composition, which later became widely used, known as quarterly ~ «cuartelado». Other ways to combine the coats of arms of two spouses are:

• Creating a new dimidiated shield ~ «dimidiado».
• Creating a new impaled shield ~ «partido».
• Adding one coat of arms to another as an escutcheon of pretence ~ «escusón de pretensión», in this case, rather than a claim, there was full ownership.

Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1289, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. I am particularly fond of compony arms, and this one is, to me, among the most beautiful and quintessentially Castilian.

Edward IV King of England and Lord of Ireland, «The Armorial of Edward IV», «The Edward IV Roll», armorial in the form of a roll about 6 meters long, created to celebrate the coronation of Edward IV as the first King of England from the House of York and illustrated, probably, by different artists, 1461.

The image illustrating this reference corresponds to the banner, which is number 27 in the 2^nd column, the final one of this armorial. This banner is held by a white deer, which was a personal badge of King Richard II of England, and also, two white deer were the supporters of his shield. The reason for the inclusion of this white deer might be to contribute to the legitimization of Edward IV as king.

It is notable that in row 25 of the 2^nd column of this armorial there is a banner with the arms of the shield of Castilla y León, probably because Edward IV, like his predecessors, claimed their throne. In this version of the shield of Castilla y León:

• The two gold castles, in the 1^st and 4^th quarters of gules, have three towers with the central one taller like the Castilian, but the twin side towers seem to be connected by the wall as in the English castle, [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 2] and [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33], the wall has a door that is enameled in azure as in the Castilian.
• The two lions, in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters of silver, seem to be gold, therefore, of «metal on metal» and, furthermore, very different from the purple lion of Castilla y León, it could well be an error by the artist or a degradation of an original purple enamel to ochre, as explained in the pendón de Castilla y León.

This shield of Castilla y León also appears:

• On the banner in row 27 of the 1^st column of this armorial. In this banner, they are combined with the arms of England represented in this article, in a new quartered, under an escutcheon with the imaginary arms of «Brutus of Troy», the also imaginary founder and king of Britain.
• On the caparison of the horse that Edward IV rides in the portrait at the beginning of his armorial. This caparison is a reproduction of the previous banner in row 27 of the 1^st column that combined the arms of England with those of Castilla y León. The presence of these arms in this initial portrait of the armorial of Edward IV denotes the importance he gave to his aspirations to the crown of Castilla y León.

It is with King Ferdinand III the Saint of Castile when «the emblematic system reaches its highest degree of perfection, acquiring two characteristics: realism, which becomes a hallmark of Spanish heraldry,... and the tendency to combine coats of arms» with the appearance of quarterly divisions replacing the cadency marks used in the rest of Europe [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 100].

The Hradec Králové Region is an administrative unit of the Czech Republic. It is located in the historical region of Bohemia. Its capital is Hradec Králové, whose Latin name is «Gradicium», hence its old name «Gradec». The letter «G» seen in both the coat of arms of the Hradec Králové Region and the coat of arms of its capital originates from this historical name. The lion rampant Anrgent, double queued and crowned in the 1^st and 4^th quarters is the symbol of Bohemia, and it also appears in the 1^st and 4^th quarters of the coat of arms of the Czech Republic. «Králové» means «of the queen» in Czech and there is a trefoiled crown in the 3^rd quarter

In [Humphery-Smith, C.; 1983; paragraph 2] the coat of arms of Eleanor Plantagenet, Queen Consort of Castile, is described, as part of an analysis on the origin of the three leopards in the coat of arms of England. However, in this description, an error is made by replacing the V with an X in the numeral of her husband and king, thus naming Alfonso VIII of Castile as if he were King Alfonso XIII: «Eleanor who married Alfonso XIII, King of Castile and Leon, has depicted on her tomb in the Huelgas monastery of the Cistercian nuns at Burgos, a thirteenth-century shield depicting three crowned leopards (lions passant guardant) gold on red».

Pendón interpretado por mí como: un rectángulo de proporción entre su ancho y su alto de 5x6; el campo está esmaltado de tintas planas gules y plata; los 2 castillos y los 2 leones están iluminados; el león y su corona están delineados del campo; el castillo está mazonado de sable; y el conjunto tiene un acabado apergaminado.

Puede consultarse en el armorial para la coronación de [Eduardo IV de Inglaterra; 1461; columna 2, fila 25] un pendón de estas características, la razón de ello era la aspiración de Eduardo IV a este reino, aspiración procedente de sus predecesores.

Este armorial fue realizado por diferentes artistas y al que le correspondió hacer el pendón de Castilla y León parece que pintó los leones de oro, si bien este oro no es tan amarillo como el que esmalta los castillos, castillo que tienen 2 ventanas mínimas y una puerta aclarada de azur. Por esta diferencia de tonos entre leones y castillos cabría plantearse la hipótesis de una degradación de un esmalte púrpura original en un ocre.

Al comienzo del armorial también aparecen estos leones en una representación ecuestre de Eduardo IV donde un tono rosa podría recordar a un púrpura original y, por tanto, apoyar la hipótesis de la degradación.

Finalmente, hay una tercera aparición de estos leones en otro pendón que combina las armas de Castilla y León con las de Inglaterra. Donde el color de los leones es más parecido al del pendón que al de la representación ecuestre.
