This is my process of painting an prince's crown in 4 phases, in this case a closed crown of infant of Spain. It is a classic model of this crown with the inner of the rosettes of acanthus leaves of metal Or, without gems nor pearls and with only 3 types of gems in the circle Or rubies-Gules, emerald-Sinople, diamonds-Argent and without sapphires-Azur. Unlike the closed royal crown, the crown of infant of Spain has only 4 pearl diadems, of which 3 are visible. The closed royal crown has 8 pearl diadems, of which 5 are visible.

Arms of the King interpreted as follows: the escutcheon is finished in a semi-circular arch; both the field, the lion, and the crown of the crest have been illuminated; and the ensemble has a hammered metal finish.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Arms of the king, as interpreted by me, as follows: the shield's shape is pointed and rounded; the field is enameled Gules; the castle is outlined in Sable; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Coat of arms that I have organized based on a previous idea from the ANPC, in the following way: the mouth of the shield is rounded and is outlined at double my usual thickness; the whole is enamelled in gules, argent and or, illuminated, outlined in sable and with a watercolor finish; and to separate the letters of the motto a dot «·» is used at mid-height.

[Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975; page 119 and following] dedicates its chapter 7 to «representative heraldry» and, within it, its first section to «professional heraldry», to which this coat of arms belongs according to his classification, and defines it as that which «corresponds to and reflects... all the emblems of the different professions, professional associations, societies where people with the same hobbies or pastimes are grouped». The other 3 categories that, together with «professional heraldry», make up «representative heraldry» are «industrial», «sport» and «tourism».

Personally, I follow my own heraldic classification, which follows to some extent [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975], in which the coats of arms of associations like the ANPC are classified within what I call socioeconomic heraldry.

This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast that was painted in the Freiherren diploma that was issued in 1790 (source: «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, königlich-bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26»). This coat of arms has been emblazoned by me because the family needed a modern version that can be used digitally. Nine of my interpretations of the coat of arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, together with three constructive diagrams illustrating my execution of this coat of arms, were documented, edited, and printed in book form. Two unique copies were hand-bound in leather, with the cover engraved with this coat of arms. One of them was delivered to the Household of His Majesty, and I received a letter conveying His Majesty the King’s gratitude for my heraldic interpretation of his coat of arms based on the golden ratio.

Pre-existing arms interpreted by me as follows: the shield of arms has a rounded (semicircular) base; the quarterly field, the two castles and the two lions are illuminated; the lion and its crown are outlined in the colour of the field; the open royal crown and the castle are outlined in Sable, in the case of the castle because it is masoned; and the whole has a painted plaster finish.

In [Medél, R.; 1846; plate 10, illustration 4] his interpretation of the arms of Castile and León can be seen.

For the expression «a Castle triple towered» in the English blazon, I have followed [Burke, B.; 2009; pages 12, 27, 41, 51, 76, 104, 106, 109, 150, 159, 171, 189, 200, 226, 273, 281, 282, 287, 322 and others], where it is used more often with a hyphen «triple-towered» and less often without a hyphen «triple towered», which is the form I have chosen.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

Rif War, July 23, 1921, banks of the Igan River, North Africa

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Per fess is the horizontal division into two parts, and per pale is the vertical division into two; therefore, per fess and per pale in base means that the shield is first divided horizontally, with the upper part as the first quarter, and the lower part is then divided vertically into two, forming the second and third quarters. This is my interpretation of the coat of arms of Her Royal Highness Doña Leonor Princess of Asturias (as heiress to the Crown of Castile), Princess of Girona (as heiress to the Crown of Aragon), and Princess of Viana (as heiress to the Kingdom of Navarre), with the Collar of the Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece. Her coat of arms is that of her father, the King, charged with a label Azure and surmounted by the crown of a princess with four pearl diadems, three visible.

Coat of arms of His Majesty King Charles III emblazoned by me. The Tudor Crown, or 16^th-century Imperial State Crown, has been the motif chosen by King Charles III for his visual identity. This crown is distinguished by its four ascending arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. The arches, adorned with pearls, join at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. The cloth cap inside is traditionally represented in Gules. And the base is lined with ermine. The way to distinguish the Tudor Crown from Saint Edward Crown is that Saint Edward Crown has depressed arches and its cap or inner lining is traditionally represented in Purpure. Charles III's choice revives the heraldic version used by his grandfather and great-grandfather, marking a preference for a symbol of the 16^th-century monarchy.

Design rationale

The hurt represents what is known as the Good Raft, a symbol of the town and its people, it is a circular cistern of 40 meters in diameter of Roman origin, and the Maltese cross is a symbol of its connection since 1188 to the Royal Monastery of Sijena of Hospitaller nuns of the Order Malta.

A symbolic image representing, through 3 coats of arms, the creation of the coat of arms of the King Ferdinand III the Saint from the arms of Alfonso IX, King of León, and Berenguela, Queen of Castile. The shapes of all three shields are rounded; all their components are illuminated; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

Ferdinand III the Saint was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. During his reign, the crowns of Castile and León were united forever. When, in 1230, Ferdinand III succeeded his father, he adopted a quarterly coat of arms, placing his mother's arms, the castle, in the 1^st and 4^th quarters, and his father's arms, the lion, in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters. His goal was likely to achieve balance between the two kingdoms and to give his coat of arms a greater sense of continuity over time compared to impaled arms. The coat of arms of Ferdinand III the Saint was the first quarterly shield in history, and the idea spread into the heraldry of Spain and other kingdoms, such as Aragon-Sicily, Brabant, England, Navarre, and Bohemia.

The municipality of Jamilena belongs to the La Campiña region and is the smallest in the province of Jaén. I have depicted its coat of arms with an open royal crown, but representations with a closed royal crown can also be found.

The origin of the cross of Calatrava in its heraldic coat of arms dates back to the year 1525 when Emperor Charles V issued several decrees from Toledo to build a convent for nuns in Jamilena. For the construction of this convent, stones from the Muslim castle, which was reformed and occupied by the Order of Calatrava, were used.

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

The Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain was founded under the name «Asociación de Hidalgos, Infanzones y Noblezas a Fuero de España» by Vicente and Francisco de Cadenas y Vicent, the Marquises of Siete Iglesias and of Zayas, and also by Valentín Dávila Jalón, Marquis of Dávila.

This association brings together nobles of Spanish lineages with the aim of maintaining and promoting the traditional values of the hidalguía and is inspired by the principles of Christian humanism. In saltire arrangements, I prefer to place the element in bend over the element in bend sinister, since the bend takes precedence over the bend sinister. The Royal Spanish Academy was founded in 1713 on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, eighth Marquess of Villena and Duke of Escalona, with the aim of «fixing the words and vocabulary of the Castilian language in its greatest propriety, elegance, and purity». A year later, in 1714, its creation was approved by a Royal Decree of Philip V.

To symbolize its purpose, its emblem with a crucible to the fire and its motto «Limpia, fija y da esplendor» [Zamora Vicente, A.; 1999] were chosen by secret ballot. In some old versions of this emblem the motto can be read with the term «fixa» and a comma before the conjunction, that is, «Limpia, fixa, y da esplendor».

This article is illustrated with my personal interpretation of this emblem of the Royal Spanish Academy, crested with a closed royal crown of 8 arches, of which the 5 frontal ones are completely visible.

In this, as in any of my works, I always consult its dictionaries, almost as much, as the most interesting and specific works on the subject of study.
