This is my process of painting an prince's crown in 4 phases, in this case a closed crown of infant of Spain. It is a classic model of this crown with the inner of the rosettes of acanthus leaves of metal Or, without gems nor pearls and with only 3 types of gems in the circle Or rubies-Gules, emerald-Sinople, diamonds-Argent and without sapphires-Azur. Unlike the closed royal crown, the crown of infant of Spain has only 4 pearl diadems, of which 3 are visible. The closed royal crown has 8 pearl diadems, of which 5 are visible.

Arms of the King interpreted as follows: the escutcheon is finished in a semi-circular arch; both the field, the lion, and the crown of the crest have been illuminated; and the ensemble has a hammered metal finish.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Arms of the king, as interpreted by me, as follows: the shield's shape is pointed and rounded; the field is enameled Gules; the castle is outlined in Sable; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

I have illuminated the shield inside the emblem with gules, argent and or tinctures; the figure of Justice is shaded; The banners and mottos have argent and azure letters accompanied by 3 stars; the shape of the emblem is oval; and the ensemble has a lightly hammered metal finish.

In the descriptions of objects that contain coats of arms, for example, this ANPC emblem, I put the blazon of the shield in square brackets following its rules and, outside of these brackets, the description of the exterior ensemble of the emblem. The reason for this is that it is in these descriptions of the exterior where the language of the blazon is not always totally applicable.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

Rif War, July 23, 1921, banks of the Igan River, North Africa

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

Law 2/1983 of 23 December on the flag, the coat of arms, and the anthem of the Community of Madrid, published in the Official State Gazette, number 33 of 8 February 1984, defines this coat of arms in its Article 2 as follows: «...it consists of a single quarter Gules, charged Or with two castles in pair, embattled, donjoned, masoned Sable and ajouré Azure, surmounted in chief by seven mullets Argent, arranged four and three. Design rationale

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Per fess is the horizontal division into two parts, and per pale is the vertical division into two; therefore, per fess and per pale in base means that the shield is first divided horizontally, with the upper part as the first quarter, and the lower part is then divided vertically into two, forming the second and third quarters. This coat of arms is equal to the flag of Castilla-La Mancha officially approved in 1980 and designed by Ramón José Maldonado y Cocat. The 1^st quarter represents Castilla and the 2^nd quarter the great plane of La Mancha.

Historical origin

The coat of arms of Jean-Philippe Sendat reflects his lineage, tradition, and family symbolism, as described below.

His family coat of arms dates back to 1667 and is associated with the former Barony of Sendat. This coat of arms includes lions quartered in the style of Castile and León, and, as a crest, a lion.

The 6 scallop shells, pilgrim's shells, represent the connection to the Camino de Santiago, as pilgrims were hosted in the family castle.

Jean-Philippe Sendat, as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, is granted the privilege of adorning his coat of arms with a Count Palatine crown.

This crown is composed of 4 large pearls, 3 of which are visible, alternated with 4 groups of smaller pearls, of which 2 are visible.

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower; this area was owned for centuries by the Marquis of Villena and hence the crown of Marquis. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

My interpretation endows the coat of arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain with the golden proportion, based on the golden number Phi, which is present in many works of art, in architecture, in mathematics, and in Nature itself; there are official arms established by Royal Decree 527/2014, and the arms shown here constitute only a new personal interpretation of the same blazon; the shape of the shield is that of the Spanish type with a semicircular base, of height h and base b, with the proportion b/h = 5/6; the shield is placed at the center of a golden rectangle, of height 2h, twice the height of the shield, and of width 2h/Phi, Phi being the golden number, equal to 1.6180339887…; to the set formed by the shield and the golden rectangle a circle of radius h/Phi is added, tangent to both vertical sides of the rectangle and also tangent at the center of the upper boundary of the chief of His Majesty’s shield; this circle forms the edge of the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and from its lowest point the fleece hangs down until it nearly touches the base of the golden rectangle; the golden rectangle is divided into four equal parts, each of height h/2, assigned respectively to the closed royal crown, to Castile and León, to Aragon, Navarre and Granada, and to the lower part of the collar and the Golden Fleece; in this way, the entire coat of arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI can be defined as a function of a single parameter h, corresponding to the height of the shield, and the dimensions specified in terms of the base b are likewise functions of h thanks to the proportion b = 5h/6.

This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. The Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain was founded under the name «Asociación de Hidalgos, Infanzones y Noblezas a Fuero de España» by Vicente and Francisco de Cadenas y Vicent, the Marquises of Siete Iglesias and of Zayas, and also by Valentín Dávila Jalón, Marquis of Dávila.

This association brings together nobles of Spanish lineages with the aim of maintaining and promoting the traditional values of the hidalguía and is inspired by the principles of Christian humanism. It fulfills its duty to provide services to Spain, its institutions and its citizens, with loyalty to the Crown and commitment to Spanish culture and history.

Its magazine Hidalgos, also known as «La Gacetilla de Hidalgos de España», or simply «La Gacetilla», as this was its name until the end of 2010, precisely until its issue 524 of October, November and December 2010. This magazine is an excellent source of knowledge and information, and some of its articles are cited throughout Blason.es, for example, those by [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b], [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2010] and [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2012b].

In saltire arrangements, I prefer to place the element in bend over the element in bend sinister, since the bend takes precedence over the bend sinister. Therefore, in my interpretation of this coat of arms and unlike other interpretations, the two-handed sword placed in bend is drawn above the one placed in bend sinister.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».
