This is my process of painting an prince's crown in 4 phases, in this case a closed crown of infant of Spain. It is a classic model of this crown with the inner of the rosettes of acanthus leaves of metal Or, without gems nor pearls and with only 3 types of gems in the circle Or rubies-Gules, emerald-Sinople, diamonds-Argent and without sapphires-Azur. Unlike the closed royal crown, the crown of infant of Spain has only 4 pearl diadems, of which 3 are visible. The closed royal crown has 8 pearl diadems, of which 5 are visible.

Arms of the King interpreted as follows: the escutcheon is finished in a semi-circular arch; both the field, the lion, and the crown of the crest have been illuminated; and the ensemble has a hammered metal finish.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Arms of the king, as interpreted by me, as follows: the shield's shape is pointed and rounded; the field is enameled Gules; the castle is outlined in Sable; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Pre-existing arms interpreted by me as follows: the shield of arms has a rounded (semicircular) base; the quarterly field, the two castles and the two lions are illuminated; the lion and its crown are outlined in the colour of the field; the open royal crown and the castle are outlined in Sable, in the case of the castle because it is masoned; and the whole has a painted plaster finish.

In [Medél, R.; 1846; plate 10, illustration 4] his interpretation of the arms of Castile and León can be seen.

For the expression «a Castle triple towered» in the English blazon, I have followed [Burke, B.; 2009; pages 12, 27, 41, 51, 76, 104, 106, 109, 150, 159, 171, 189, 200, 226, 273, 281, 282, 287, 322 and others], where it is used more often with a hyphen «triple-towered» and less often without a hyphen «triple towered», which is the form I have chosen.

All colors and metals

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

Coat of arms interpreted in the following manner: the shape of the shield is of a semicircular arch; the field is illuminated in metal Argent; the cross of Alcantara is outlined in Sable and illuminated in Vert; the royal crown is closed, outlined in Sable and illuminated with the metal Or, Argent for the pearls, Azure and Or for the orb, Gules and Vert for the gems, Gules for the inner cloth, and Sable for the visible hollow at its base; and the whole has a slightly hammered metal finish.

Regiment's Motto

The Latin motto «Hoec nubila tollunt obstantia sicut sol» is often translated as «Ride like the sun, disperses the clouds in its path». I would like to offer the following observations on this translation:

• Instead of «disperse», I prefer the verb «scatter» which is more aligned with a cavalry regiment, [Royal Spanish Academy; 2001] «scatter, 3^rd meaning, transitive verb, military term: To break up, rout the enemy, causing them to flee and scatter in complete disorder».
• On the other hand, even though it is about cavalry, I do not find that the Latin motto makes reference to riding, a verb that is also not needed to understand the motto's meaning, and adding an extra word lengthens the motto, reducing its impact.
• Finally, I use «your», instead of «its», so that the motto is a direct and personal rallying cry and not a phrase directed at a third person.

The illustration brings together two different aspects. On the one hand, the photograph captures the moment in which I explain the coat of arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, during one of my heraldic art exhibitions, pointing directly to its components while the audience observes. On the other hand, it shows the coat of arms of Charles V as painted by me. All the works visible in the image have been created by me. In this exhibition, I combined the presentation of my coats of arms with a live music concert featuring works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Komitas, and Carlos Gardel.

Design rationale

The castles came from Castile and the 7 mullet from the bordure of the city of Madrid, they are the stars of the Plough, the 7 brightest stars of the Ursa Major. This coat of arms was adopted by the Comunidad de Madrid the 23th of December 23 of 1983.

On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version. The expression «waves Azure or blue and Argent», which appears both in the 1977 official definition and in the 1981 one, presents a double peculiarity: it combines the heraldic term «Azure» with the everyday term «blue», and it is also offered as an optional blazon, giving two alternatives, that the waves be only Azure, as I have painted them, or Azure and Argent; optional blazons are extremely rare and, in my view, perhaps not very advisable.

Depending on heraldic traditions, the mantling can be of one colour doubled with a metal, or of several colours and metals. Heritage Malta is the Maltese national agency responsible for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage. It was established under the Cultural Heritage Act of 2002. This image was used by Heritage Malta in a social media advertisement for the recruitment of a Deputy Chief Herald and Deputy Registrar for the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta. The advertisement was illustrated with this coat of arms, painted by me for Dr Martin Testaferrata Moroni Viani’s grant. This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast. The image above shows the historical illustration as it appears in the «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast, 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Königlich-Bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26, Opvallend zijn de onmiskenbare verwijzingen naar het verblijf in de West», which can be consulted on the website juchtervanbergenquast.wordpress.com and below is my current interpretation of this coat of arms. In heraldry there are two kinds of tinctures: colours, for example Gules, Azure, and Sable, and metals, Or and Argent. There is also a heraldic rule of tinctures that states not colour on colour and not metal on metal. The vambraced arm was originally Azure over a Gules field, which is colour on colour and against the rule. I corrected it with the family’s permission by changing the vambraced arm to Argent, so now it is metal Argent on colour Gules, which is correct, and Argent is a good tincture for armory. For this reason, I also used Argent for the helm and for the tips of the tournament spear. The flags also show colour on colour, but they are decorative details and not important, and changing their colours would alter the ship’s nationality, which must remain as it is. It is possible that the Azure we now see originated from the fact that the arm vambraced , the spearheads, and the helm were originally depicted as iron or proper and that over the course of time this natural greyish tone gradually turned into Azure.

Its capital is Hradec Králové, whose Latin name is «Gradicium», hence its old name «Gradec». The origin of the cross of Calatrava in its heraldic coat of arms dates back to the year 1525 when Emperor Charles V issued several decrees from Toledo to build a convent for nuns in Jamilena. For the construction of this convent, stones from the Muslim castle, which was reformed and occupied by the Order of Calatrava, were used.

The Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain was founded under the name «Asociación de Hidalgos, Infanzones y Noblezas a Fuero de España» by Vicente and Francisco de Cadenas y Vicent, the Marquises of Siete Iglesias and of Zayas, and also by Valentín Dávila Jalón, Marquis of Dávila.

This association brings together nobles of Spanish lineages with the aim of maintaining and promoting the traditional values of the hidalguía and is inspired by the principles of Christian humanism. It fulfills its duty to provide services to Spain, its institutions and its citizens, with loyalty to the Crown and commitment to Spanish culture and history.

Its magazine Hidalgos, also known as «La Gacetilla de Hidalgos de España», or simply «La Gacetilla», as this was its name until the end of 2010, precisely until its issue 524 of October, November and December 2010. In saltire arrangements, I prefer to place the element in bend over the element in bend sinister, since the bend takes precedence over the bend sinister. Therefore, in my interpretation of this coat of arms and unlike other interpretations, the two-handed sword placed in bend is drawn above the one placed in bend sinister.

Interpretation made from the Royal Academy emblem: transforming it into a semicircular-based shield, instead of its oval shape; with its motto on a scroll beneath the base, instead of surrounding it; keeping the closed royal crown in its place; with everything illuminated except the field which is in plain color; and the whole outlined in sable and with a parchment-like finish.

In this interpretation, on the Argent field, the Gules fire of the bonfire completely surrounds the Argent crucible, to avoid the metal Argent on the same.

To write the blazon for this coat of arms I use the heraldic term «llameante». Therefore, I do not follow [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 82 and figure 163] when he writes «...y un Fénix de gules sobre una hoguera encendida de lo mismo.». He uses this example to illustrate the 2 fundamental uses of the term «encendido» which is said when «the Eyes of animals... are of a different color» and «also of a burning Bush and the same for a Torch, when the flame is of a different tincture».

These arms have been included in the book [Gauci, C. A.; Cassar, R. M.; 2025; pages 180-181] as shown in the photograph of the image, each on a page. In some Italian and Maltese arms registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, two coronets are displayed: the coronet placed directly above the shield represents the armiger’s personal rank or status, while the upper coronet represents the higher noble rank of the family line. In the case of two daughters of a baron, each may bear above her shield the coronet corresponding to her personal status as a noble, while above it is displayed the baronial coronet representing the rank of her father and of the family line.
