Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

Alfonso Sánchez de Perella, first mayor of Burgos emblazoned by me. He appears as the [Cofradía de Santiago; Century XIV; 4^th knight, 1^st of the page 21 V], from this 14^th century Book of the Brotherhood of Knights of Santiago de la Fuente. This was a brotherhood founded by the Burgos citizens at the time of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, 1311-1350. In the book, there are 14 saltires instead of 16, as it appears that one is missing on the sinister side of the base, and there are 4 in the chief instead of 5.

Arms of the king, as interpreted by me, as follows: the shield's shape is pointed and rounded; the field is enameled Gules; the castle is outlined in Sable; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

Coat of arms of the King Alfonso X of Castile, 1221–1284, 1^st son of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. The order of the quarters is first the castle of his grandmother, Queen Berenguela of Castile, and second the lion of his grandfather, King Alfonso IX of León; however, the other day I discovered that on the map by [Martineau du Plessis, D.; 1700; volume II, illustration 30, page 126], in the shield framed between parallels 37 and 36 and meridians 21 and 22, the lion occupies the 1^st quarter and the castle the 2^nd quarter; that is, their order appears reversed.

Armories of the Wise King of Castile interpreted by me with the following characteristics: the external shape of the coat of arms ends in an ogee arch; the field, the 2 castles, and the 2 lions are outlined and enameled in flat colors; and the texture seems fabric.

This coat of arms, but with a pointed external shape, can be seen in the 2^nd part of the so-called armorial [Wijnbergen; 1265; cuat of arms number 1,289], with the title «Le roy Despaingne», which in this context is understood to refer to Castilla y León.

The 2^nd part of this armorial was made between 1270 and 1285 and, being Alphonse X king of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284, it is to Him that the title «Le roy Despaingne» seems to refer.

In [Anonymous; 1800a; page 46] the blazon of «the Zúñigas» is described, where in this book, curiously, the letter Z is ordered after C and before D.

For its better identification, I have painted the millstone with the ring that fixes it to its axis. This ring is called a millrind, it is made of iron, and usually has 4 arms to better fix the millstone. Millrinds may appear on coats of arms independently of millstones. Another heraldic element related to the previous ones is the millwheel, which is a toothed gear that is part of the mill mechanism but should not be confused with the millstone that grinds the grain.

Coat of arms of the Infanta Berenguela of Castile, 1228–1279, 5^th daughter of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. There are discrepancies regarding the year of her death, with sources suggesting either 1279 or 1288. She bore her father's arms with a bordure compony featuring the arms of Castile and those of her mother, from Swabia. [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982; page 104 and illustration between pages 112 and 113] writes «We know of a seal of this infanta that displays in the field the royal quarterly, surrounded like a bordure by 4 castles and 4 eagles, alternating», and in the illustration he depicts the bordure with 8 castles and 8 eagles, which is the version I have interpreted. The armorial [Urfé; 15^th century] contains only blazons written in French and is not decorated with shields.

The image shows my interpretation of the arms and, beneath it, the blazon of the king of Navarre as follows «Le Roy de Navarre... de gueles à l'escarboucle d'or pommelée alumée de sinoble en la moyenne en guise d'esmeraude» which could be translated as «The King of Navarre... Gules, a carbuncle Or pommetty, illuminated Vert in the middle in the manner of an emerald».

Note that the blazon does not suggest the presence of an emerald, but that the place corresponding to the central boss of the shield, from which the rays of the carbuncle emerge, is enamelled Vert.

In the article Universitas Studiorum Navarrensis about the arms of the University of Navarre I interpret the arms of Navarre borne in profile by the Archangel Saint Michael, which, by my way of painting it, lies halfway between the carbuncle and the chains, with round chain links and long carbuncle rays, where at the centre there is no emerald, but a Vert enamel in the manner of an emerald.

Coat of arms of Stephen Tvrtko I (circa 1338-1391) of the House of Kotromanic and 1^st King of Bosnia and it was also the coat of arms of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1998.

The bendlet is a diminutive of the bend. It is a diminished bend, narrower, and typically reduced to 1/2 (as in this case) or to 1/3 of the width of a normal bend. This piece is called «cotiza» in Castilian, «cotice» in French, and «cotissa» in Italian. Remember that the width of the bend is usually 1/3 of the width of the coat of arms, therefore the width of the bendlet is between 1/3 * 1/2 = 1/6 and 1/3 * 1/3 = 1/9 of the width of the coat of arm.

Louis I or Louis of Anjou, known as «the Great», from the Royal House of Anjou-Sicily, of the Capetian Dynasty, hence his coat of arms's 2^nd quarter is seeded with fleur de lis, a feature also present in his father Charles I's arms, known as Charles Robert or Caroberto of Anjou. The Kotromanic family had in their coat of arms fleur de lis Or on a Azure field as a symbol of subordination to the Hungarian royal family.

Juan del Bosque, «Libro de Armería del Reino de Navarra», which is currently missing and whose subsequent copy, commissioned in 1572, is kept in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, estimated year of creation 1540.

The origin of this armorial dates back to 1527, when the Navarrese Courts requested that the Royal Council and the Chamber of Comptos ~ Chamber of Accounts and Fiscal Control, record in a book the coats of arms of the kingdom of Navarre starting with that of the king of Navarre and the houses and lineages of the so-called «ricoshombres», Almorrabides, Guebara, Aybar, Baztanes, Urroz, Lete, Subiça, Rada, Vidaurre, Qasqante, Monteagudo, and Mauleón, also including the coats of arms of other manors, houses, valleys, towns, and nobles [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 326].

According to [Martinena Ruiz, J. J.; 1982; page 35] the book was compiled around the year 1540, and this is the date I use for referencing this armorial.

This first manuscript created by Juan del Bosque was taken by the royal visitor Hernán Suárez de Toledo, under the pretext of taking it to Emperor Charles V, despite being requested back by the Navarrese Courts, it was never returned and was definitively lost. The armorial that has come down to us is a recreation commissioned in 1572 [Valverde Ogallar, P. B.; 2001; page 327].

According to [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1974; page 19] the recreation of this armorial was carried out based on certifications, such as those from the herald Azcárraga, and notes and partial copies of the stolen book, like the copy kept in the monastery of Leyre.

Around 1155, Beatrix de Villers married Richard le Boteler Pincerna, who became the 4^th Baron of Warrington. The heir of Beatrix and Richard took the surname «le Boteler» and ruled the Warrington region, bearing arms Azure, a bend between six covered cups Or.

In Castilian, a «copa» has a lid and is referred to as a «covered cup» in English. When it doesn't have a lid, it's called a «cup» in English and a «cáliz» or «copón» in Castilian, the latter being a less preferred term for me. In English, the term «chalice» is also used, especially if it's adorned with gemstones, although that's more of an artistic license.

Naipes Heraclio Fournier is a renowned Spanish playing card manufacturer based in Villareal de Álava. The countless hours I have spent holding its cards in my hands are incalculable, whether playing with friends, opponents, or performing magic tricks. Its influence on my heraldic artwork is significant. For instance, in this covered cup.

Tongues out

This is a reflection on tongues protruding in animals in heraldry. I will rely on the representations in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909], which include numerous depictions of animals in a wide range of heraldic attitudes.

In heraldry, tigers [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 322–325], lions, wolves, bears, etc., are commonly shown with their tongues out. These are heraldic beasts and carnivores.

However, the fox [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 343–345] is not shown with its tongue out. It is classified as a heraldic beast and is also carnivorous.

The boar is an omnivore, a heraldic beast, and is depicted with its tongue out [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 353–358].

From this, it’s clear that having the tongue out is not uniformly associated with being a heraldic beast or being carnivorous.

On the other hand, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 446–449] classifies eagles as birds, not beasts. They are carnivorous and shown with their tongues out.

Dolphins, which are carnivorous fish, are also depicted with tongues protruding [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 479–480].

Some heraldists claim that herbivores are never shown with their tongues out.

But donkeys, mules, and especially horses —all herbivores— can indeed be shown with tongues out. For example, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 360 and 362] depict horses with tongues out, though figure 361, where the horse is running, does not. In no case are horses classified as heraldic beasts.

[Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 368 and 370] show the talbot, the mythical heraldic dog, with its tongue out when rampant or passant, but not when standing or seated. This might suggest that a protruding tongue is related to dynamic postures. However, we saw in the previous paragraph that a running horse isn’t necessarily drawn that way.

The bull [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 375–376] is not depicted with its tongue out. Nevertheless, I do paint bulls with tongues protruding. And although bulls are herbivores, I defend the heraldic bull as one of the most beastly figures in heraldry.

Stags never appear with tongues out in any of their postures [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 379–386], nor do other cervids [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 387–390] as the roe deer of this coat of arms.

Rams, sheep, lambs, and goats also do not [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 395–403].

The badger, like the fox, is carnivorous [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 409], yet also lacks a protruding tongue.

In conclusion, a protruding tongue cannot be consistently associated with heraldic beasts or carnivores. Nor can the absence of a tongue be linked solely to herbivores or to peaceful postures. For instance, lions are always shown with tongues out, even in their calmest attitudes [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figures 304–309].

Ultimately, it is up to the heraldic artist to decide whether to depict the tongue, depending on what they want to express. Greater aggression, motion, or liveliness may justify a protruding tongue. As a symbol of liveliness and agility, in this case, but perhaps not in others, I paint this roe deer with its tongue hanging out.

Design rationale

The main elements of her arms are the stag and the sabre. The stag symbolizes the reluctance to fight unless provoked. The sabre, resembling a Model 1902 US Army cavalry sabre, is chosen for its significance in both the US Army and the US Air Force. She is a combat veteran who served for 20 years, mostly in humanitarian and medical roles; therefore, the sabre is positioned with its tip towards the heraldic sinister in a non-aggressive attitude. Gules-red is chosen for its association with the military. She continued to serve her brother and sister veterans for another 25 years after her military retirement. Service is very important to her, and it is a value she wishes to pass down to her children and grandchildren, as her motto affirms, «Iustitia per Ministerium», Justice through Service. The yellow rose represents her home state of Texas. The acorn and its rounded leaves of the white oak tree represent Grandmother Oak, a connection with Mother Nature, and independence. Overall, a bald eagle displayed, the symbol of America, is placed on the crest of her arms.

Design rationale

The arms symbolise the dawn of a new life. The field is tierced per fess to evoke the sky in 3 stages: Sable for the darkness of night, Azure for the horizon at first light, and Sanguine for the rising sun. The 7 stars of Ursa Major, in their traditional arrangement, evoke guidance, constancy, and a Dantesque reference, as the constellation appears in the Divine Comedy. The demi-sun in base, gold upon sanguine, marks the moment of emotional awakening, the dawn of love. The scroll motto «Incipit Vita Nova», the first line of Dante’s Vita Nuova, reflects a personal spiritual transformation. The Azure speaks of eternal loyalty, and the silver stars of purity. The choice of Sanguine, both for the sunlit sky and for the scroll and mantling, is also an homage to Beatrice’s dress as described by Dante at their first encounter. All of the above holds a parallel with the bearer’s personal life, which gives this composition a dual significance, both literary and deeply intimate. The raven as crest, a symbol of memory and intelligence, represents the collector’s spirit and a deep inner life.

The oak tree laden with acorns Or in the first quarter symbolizes the family's fertility. The oak and the domed tower in the second quarter, in their transformed forms, are elements from the coat of arms of the Simon lineage, which they represent. The third quarter derives from the arms of the Faus family and represents it. The plain cross in the fourth quarter is a symbol of Christ and of Aragon. The Latin motto reads: «Strong as Iron».

Per fess is the horizontal division into two parts, and per pale is the vertical division into two; therefore, per fess and per pale in base means that the shield is first divided horizontally, with the upper part as the first quarter, and the lower part is then divided vertically into two, forming the second and third quarters. The heraldic crescent is a moon with its horns pointing upward (to chief); to distinguish it from the natural crescent moon, in Spanish heraldry it is called «creciente tornado», while in English the equivalent term is increscent. Saint Edward Crown, the fundamental piece used in the anointing ceremony of British monarchs, was reconstructed in 1661 after the Restoration. This crown is distinguished by its four depressed or downward-curving arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. Like the Tudor, its arches, adorned with pearls, converge at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. The crown's base is lined with ermine, and the cap or inner lining is traditionally represented in Purpure. Design ideas

The heraldic art often involves resolving design challenges while maintaining both aesthetic balance and adherence to tradition. The coat of arms illustrated here draws inspiration from the Dethick-Dethicke family arms of Derbyshire, though it features distinct differences. This design explores the placement of water-bougets, a medieval water vessel, in a 2+2 arrangement, with a fess vair.

One key consideration when arranging charges in heraldry is proportionality. In this case, the fess occupies 1/3 of the coat of arms's width and is positioned 1/3 of the height from the chief, rather than at the exact center, allowing the charges to balance harmoniously. The shape of the shield itself also plays a role: rounded shields can accommodate a 2+2 arrangement more comfortably than shields with a pointed base, which are better suited to 2+1 arrangements, this is de case of Dethick's arms.

Another challenge in heraldic design is asymmetry. To address the natural curves of the shield, the water-bougets may vary slightly in size or placement. This intentional asymmetry can help create a visually appealing composition that respects both tradition and the unique constraints of each design, because, heraldry is not only about rules but also about creativity.

Water-bouget

In German, they are called «Wasserschlauch» in English «water-bougets» or «oges», and in French «bouses» or «chantepleures».

There is no specific heraldic term for them in Castilian. Based on «chantepleures», one could use «cantimploras», which are metallic or at least rigid. On the other hand, «oges» could translate as «odres», as they are typically made of leather as in this case. Additionally, since «water-bouget» are designed as a pair to be carried by a donkey or other animal, I have decided to use «par de odres» to convey the idea of one on each side of the animal.

In English, when there is a single charge, that is, a pair of water vessels, it is written in singular as «water-bouget», as can be seen in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 551]. [Friar, S.; 1987; page 68] defines «bouget» as «...a stylized representation of a yoke supporting two leather waterbags».

Can modern objects appear in a coat of arms?

My rule is: a coat of arms is forever, so any symbol included must be recognizable by future generations. Can you place an iPhone in a coat of arms? No—but not because it’s modern, rather because your grandchildren likely won’t recognize the form of an iPhone; in fact, today’s mobile phones already look quite different from those of a decade ago. Can you include a steam locomotive? Yes, because its form has become anchored in time and in the collective imagination. What about an hourglass, an analog clock, or a black 8-ball from pool? Also yes—their forms are now classics. That is, I believe we can use those symbols that most people already carry in their minds and that are very likely to remain present in the minds of our children and grandchildren. But this is just my humble criterion.

The coat of arms of Gregorio Lanzagorta Llaguno, harbor of San Blas, and cigar maker in Nayarit, Mexico. This coat of arms was designed by Juan Lanzagorta Vallín and painted by me in 3 steps: 1) outlined, 2) plain colors and metals, and 3) lights and shadows. The heraldic terms «gavilla» ~ «garb» in Castilian and English. Note that the English term «sheaf» also corresponds to the Castilian «gavilla». At first, I thought I remembered that in Castilian this sheaf of tobacco had the very specific name «tonga», and that is why I initially used «tonga de tabaco» ~ «tobacco sheaf». But I discovered that «tonga» is a more local than general term, [Real Academia Española; 2014] «Canarias y Cuba: Pila o porción de cosas apiladas en orden», so «tonga» is not as general as I believed, and therefore I moved on to use «gavilla de hojas de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco leaves», although this is somewhat long, and moreover the words «hojas» and «leaves» are redundant, since these sheaves are only made of leaves—just as wheat sheaves are always made of ears, so one does not say a sheaf of wheat ears. That is why I finally use for the blazon «gavilla de tabaco» ~ «sheaf of tobacco» in Castilian and English, respectively.

It is believed that Henry I was the first King of England to have a coat of arms, featuring a single lion rampant, but no documentary evidence has yet been found [Rabbow, A.; 1999; paragraph 8].

[Ailes, A.; 1982; page 62] argues that Henry II may have used three different versions of his arms featuring a) a single lion rampant, b) two leopards, and c) three leopards. However, it remains unclear whether these versions were used sequentially over time or concurrently. For this interpretation, I have chosen the version with the lion rampant.

Coat of arms of the Infante Henry of Castile, 1230–1303, 6^th offspring of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. He bore his father's arms, replacing the lion Purpure of the Kingdom of León with a cross flory Purpure, likely due to his close association with the Order of Calatrava, whose emblem is a cross flory Gules. However, he retained the metal Argent field in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters and the lion's purpure color, suggesting this was more of a conceptual change than a quartering by alliance with the Order of Calatrava.
