Purple lion of the Kingdom of León

In the following image, I show a miniature from the Tumbo A of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, from the 13th century, with the heading reading «Inclitus:Adeffonsus:Rex:Legionensium:et Gallecie:», combined with my interpretation of his coat of arms. The lion of the Kingdom of León can be found depicted in both purple and gules, but images like this confirm that it is purple, and I particularly favor the purple, as it makes it historically unique.

In [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009a; page 1] the author specifies the main characteristics of the «Castilian royal castle», which can be summarized as: «with three towers, the middle one taller, and the two flanking it identical», «each tower crowned with three battlements», «one to three doors and one or two pointed windows on each tower», and «masoned and battlemented», as also noted by the same author in [Valero de Bernabé, L.; 2009b; page 33].

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

Globus cruciger ~ Orb

It is called orb ~ «globus cruciger», the first in Spanish and the second in Latin, referring to the part of the royal crown, a jewel, or a jewel itself that recreates the shape of the globe topped with a cross.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. In English, the shaft of the column is treated as the primary element, and the tinctures of the base and capital are then specified. In Spanish, the approach is the reverse: the column is described as a whole, stating its main tincture first, and then specifying that it is shafted in another metal. For example in this case: «Supporters: two columns Argent, capital and base Or» ~ «Sostenes: dos columnas de oro, fustadas de plata».

Colour tests are printed at a reduced size to check the colours before the final giclée. They are printed on Hahnemühle Torchon paper, from a mill founded in 1584, 285 gsm, 100% cotton, using natural pigment inks. The final giclée is printed on DIN A3+ paper, slightly larger than DIN A3, sealed, dated, and signed by me.

Note how in the Spanish certification of arms, by the Chronicler of Arms of Castile and León, this unnecessary nombril specification as the origin point of the branch is omitted.

The nombril is the exact crossing point of the vertical axis of symmetry of the shield with the lower edge of the bend.

Design rationale

The fox refers to the clever and resourceful character attributed to the armiger’s family. The federschwert evokes his dedication to Historical European Martial Arts, in particular the German school of Liechtenauer and the long sword. The oak leaves have a double meaning: they symbolize nature and spirituality, linked to his belonging to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and being nine in number they allude to his Irish heritage and the legendary figure of Niall of the Nine Hostages. His ancestry includes Irish, English and German roots, the latter once again connected to the sword. The motto translates as «Clever, Caring, Witty».

Design rationale

The arms symbolise the dawn of a new life. The field is tierced per fess to evoke the sky in 3 stages: Sable for the darkness of night, Azure for the horizon at first light, and Sanguine for the rising sun. The 7 stars of Ursa Major, in their traditional arrangement, evoke guidance, constancy, and a Dantesque reference, as the constellation appears in the Divine Comedy. The demi-sun in base, gold upon sanguine, marks the moment of emotional awakening, the dawn of love. The scroll motto «Incipit Vita Nova», the first line of Dante’s Vita Nuova, reflects a personal spiritual transformation. The Azure speaks of eternal loyalty, and the silver stars of purity. The choice of Sanguine, both for the sunlit sky and for the scroll and mantling, is also an homage to Beatrice’s dress as described by Dante at their first encounter. All of the above holds a parallel with the bearer’s personal life, which gives this composition a dual significance, both literary and deeply intimate. The raven as crest, a symbol of memory and intelligence, represents the collector’s spirit and a deep inner life.

Per fess is the horizontal division into two parts, and per pale is the vertical division into two; therefore, per fess and per pale in base means that the shield is first divided horizontally, with the upper part as the first quarter, and the lower part is then divided vertically into two, forming the second and third quarters. The heraldic crescent is a moon with its horns pointing upward (to chief); to distinguish it from the natural crescent moon, in Spanish heraldry it is called «creciente tornado», while in English the equivalent term is increscent. The coat of arms of Castilla-La Mancha was adopted in 1983, it is a recent design. This coat of arms is equal to the flag of Castilla-La Mancha officially approved in 1980 and designed by Ramón José Maldonado y Cocat. The 1^st quarter represents Castilla and the 2^nd quarter the great plane of La Mancha.

Design rationale

The arms of Castilla-La Mancha and many of its towns are party per pale; the 1^st quarter is a canting elm = olmo = Casas del Olmo; the 2^nd quarter symbolizes that historically, until 1861, this village belonged to Alarcón town whose castle, of Muslim origin, has a single tower; this area was owned for centuries by the Marquis of Villena and hence the crown of Marquis. My heraldic artwork has been supervised by the Casas del Olmo Residents Association.

The coat of arms of family of Lucas Cruz (UK, Puerto Rico, Belarus, US Army) designed by him and me and emblazoned by me. This photograph shows my hand-drawn lynx couchant alongside the coat of arms in which it is used as a crest. The lynx couchant was drawn directly in ink on tracing paper using a fine technical pen and long, continuous strokes, without any preliminary pencil sketch, repeating the design as many times as necessary until the desired result was achieved. The image shows an initial tracing on tracing paper with a second, more refined tracing superimposed over it; this version was later refined a third time digitally, as can be seen in the final rendering of the coat of arms.

A symbolic image representing, through 3 coats of arms, the creation of the coat of arms of the King Ferdinand III the Saint from the arms of Alfonso IX, King of León, and Berenguela, Queen of Castile. The shapes of all three shields are rounded; all their components are illuminated; and the whole composition features a watercolor finish.

Ferdinand III the Saint was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. During his reign, the crowns of Castile and León were united forever. When, in 1230, Ferdinand III succeeded his father, he adopted a quarterly coat of arms, placing his mother's arms, the castle, in the 1^st and 4^th quarters, and his father's arms, the lion, in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters. His goal was likely to achieve balance between the two kingdoms and to give his coat of arms a greater sense of continuity over time compared to impaled arms. The coat of arms of Ferdinand III the Saint was the first quarterly shield in history, and the idea spread into the heraldry of Spain and other kingdoms, such as Aragon-Sicily, Brabant, England, Navarre, and Bohemia.

R0047, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Olivia Zangenberg's arms, United Kindom, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such register. In the practice of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, whose grants and registrations are officially published in the Government Gazette, a double coronation is occasionally observed within the armorial achievements. In this case, the coronet resting directly upon the shield represents the personal rank of the armiger (in this case, a coronet of noble as the daughter of a baron), while the superior coronet identifies the dignity of the family to which she or he belongs. The Office's policy is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «In the British tradition, coronets of rank are normally borne immediately above the shield, but in other countries e.g., Spain, Portugal, France the coronet of rank may be borne above the helm, not unlike a crest coronet. In Malta some title-holders display their coronet above the shield while others display it above the helm. The Royal Association of Hidalgos of Spain was founded under the name «Asociación de Hidalgos, Infanzones y Noblezas a Fuero de España» by Vicente and Francisco de Cadenas y Vicent, the Marquises of Siete Iglesias and of Zayas, and also by Valentín Dávila Jalón, Marquis of Dávila.

This association brings together nobles of Spanish lineages with the aim of maintaining and promoting the traditional values of the hidalguía and is inspired by the principles of Christian humanism. It depicts a raven's head sable charged with three drops and holding a ring in its beak, together with the coat of arms painted in flat tinctures, of which this raven is the crest. The complete achievement is also shown, consisting of the shield surmounted by the raven as a crest upon a torse, painted with highlights and shading to give volume and depth.
