Design rationale

The Dürer family coat of arms is an example of canting arms. Their family origin traces back to Ajtós, Hungary, a name which means «door» or «doorman» in Hungarian. Upon settling in Nuremberg, the family Germanized their surname to «Türer», derived from «Tür», meaning «door», and later to Dürer. This is the reason of the main charge of these arms.

It was founded by Count Henry of Burgundy as a military and religious order, in the year 1093, in Beira Alta, Portugal, near the river Côa with the initial name of «Ordem de São Julião do Pereiro» ~ Order of Saint Julian of Pereiro.

In the year 1214, the defense of the city of Alcantara after its conquest was entrusted to the Order of Calatrava, but in 1218 the Calatravans relinquished it due to Alcantara being far from Calatrava.

To defend Alcantara, King Alfonso IX of León entrusted it to the new Order of the Knights of Saint Julian of Pereiro, requesting in return a certain level of dependency on the Order of Calatrava, which led the Knights of Saint Julian to adopt the Cistercian rule.

Once established in Alcantara, their original name referring to Saint Julian fell into disuse, and by 1253 there were already references to the «masters of the Order of Alcantara», with Saint Julian of Pereiro becoming the foundational center and a secondary commandery of the order.

On the origin and antiquity of the Military Order of Alcantara, and the form of its Commandery

[Avilés, J.; 1780b; treatise IV, chapter V, page 339] describes it as follows: «The Military Order, which we now call of Alcantara, was formerly that of Saint Julian of Pereiro, so named after the place where it was based, along the banks of the river Côa, in the Bishopric of Ciudad-Rodrigo, established in the year 1176 by King Ferdinand II of León, and confirmed in 1177 by Pope Alexander III. And the reason for changing its first name to the second, was because after the Knights of Calatrava had taken the City of Alcantara from the Moors and defended it bravely thereafter, they found it would be difficult to keep it, as their main house was very distant, from which the other Knights and reinforcements could not come whenever needed.».

[Avilés, J.; 1780b; treatise IV, chapter V, page 340] continues by telling us «They discussed this inconvenience with others they had at the time with the King of León, Don Alfonso IX, and it was resolved that the Master of Calatrava would give that town to the Knights of Pereiro so that they might defend it, as they did, under certain conditions in the year 1218, later performing marvels in its defense, earning through their fame and distinguished feats new graces from the Kings; and seeing how essential their residence was, the Knights of Pereiro moved to the town of Alcantara, establishing their Convent there, and thus transformed into Knights of Alcantara, who were previously Knights of Saint Julian of Pereiro».

The order of the quarters is first the castle of his grandmother, Queen Berenguela of Castile, and second the lion of his grandfather, King Alfonso IX of León; however, the other day I discovered that on the map by [Martineau du Plessis, D.; 1700; volume II, illustration 30, page 126], in the shield framed between parallels 37 and 36 and meridians 21 and 22, the lion occupies the 1^st quarter and the castle the 2^nd quarter; that is, their order appears reversed.

Armories of the Wise King of Castile interpreted by me with the following characteristics: the external shape of the coat of arms ends in an ogee arch; the field, the 2 castles, and the 2 lions are outlined and enameled in flat colors; and the texture seems fabric.

This coat of arms, but with a pointed external shape, can be seen in the 2^nd part of the so-called armorial [Wijnbergen; 1265; cuat of arms number 1,289], with the title «Le roy Despaingne», which in this context is understood to refer to Castilla y León.

The 2^nd part of this armorial was made between 1270 and 1285 and, being Alphonse X king of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284, it is to Him that the title «Le roy Despaingne» seems to refer.

For its better identification, I have painted the millstone with the ring that fixes it to its axis. This ring is called a millrind, it is made of iron, and usually has 4 arms to better fix the millstone. Millrinds may appear on coats of arms independently of millstones. Another heraldic element related to the previous ones is the millwheel, which is a toothed gear that is part of the mill mechanism but should not be confused with the millstone that grinds the grain.

Regarding the external ornaments, I note that the shield is surmounted by a count’s coronet, while a marquis’s coronet appears above the helm. This arrangement is consistent with Italian heraldic practice, in which the coronet above the shield denotes the personal title of the bearer, in this case a count, whereas the one above the helm may represent the higher or historical rank of the family, in this case Marquis Prato di Arnesano, although this was the situation at the time the arms were designed, the bearer now holds that marquisate.

A mug featuring the coat of arms and motto of Bárbaro Jonathan López Linares, Cuba, designed by him and emblazoned by me. My emblazonment was used to personalize this mug. The criterion is that the tinctures must remain consistent within the same interpretation of the arms. If I paint a version of this shield, I will use a single azure for the field and for the mantling, should I depict it; the same or for the three monstrances; and the same argent for the wolf and for the sacred hosts. But in a different interpretation, another azure may be used, provided that it is azure, as well as another or and another argent. The azure used by one artist does not bind the next; that is why we use terms such as azure, which means any blue except sky blue. If we were forced to use exactly the same azure in every interpretation of the same arms, we would have to blazon them, for example, with Pantone codes or RGB specifications, and that is not what we do. The bendlet is a diminutive of the bend. It is a diminished bend, narrower, and typically reduced to 1/2 (as in this case) or to 1/3 of the width of a normal bend. This piece is called «cotiza» in Castilian, «cotice» in French, and «cotissa» in Italian. Remember that the width of the bend is usually 1/3 of the width of the coat of arms, therefore the width of the bendlet is between 1/3 * 1/2 = 1/6 and 1/3 * 1/3 = 1/9 of the width of the coat of arm.

Stephen Tvrtko I of Bosnia, from the House of Kotromanic, was a vassal of Louis I of Hungary. In Castilian, a «copa» has a lid and is referred to as a «covered cup» in English. When it doesn't have a lid, it's called a «cup» in English and a «cáliz» or «copón» in Castilian, the latter being a less preferred term for me. In English, the term «chalice» is also used, especially if it's adorned with gemstones, although that's more of an artistic license.

Naipes Heraclio Fournier is a renowned Spanish playing card manufacturer based in Villareal de Álava. The countless hours I have spent holding its cards in my hands are incalculable, whether playing with friends, opponents, or performing magic tricks. Its influence on my heraldic artwork is significant. For instance, in this covered cup.

The visible drawing corresponds to the final version, while a first earlier version can be seen beneath it through the translucent paper. This reflects my usual working method: I draw directly in ink, without a preliminary pencil sketch, using long continuous strokes and lifting the pen as little as possible. I work on successive sheets of tracing paper, one laid over another, refining the drawing from one version to the next until I reach a result that satisfies me. The first attempt is rarely successful; the stronger drawings usually emerge in the second or third version, sometimes the fourth, and occasionally after more iterations.

The Order of Chivalry of Calatrava is both military and religious, founded in the Kingdom of Castile during the 12th century by Abbot Raymond of Fitero.

The purpose of its foundation was the protection of the town of Calatrava la Vieja, which currently belongs to the municipality of Carrión de Calatrava in Ciudad Real. [Avilés, J.; 1780b; treatise IV, chapter IV, pages 334] writes «The Military Order of Calatrava was instituted by Don Sancho III, King of Castile (called the Desired), in the year 1158, while he was visiting his Kingdom; and being in Toledo with news of the great army that the Moors were gathering to besiege Calatrava la Vieja (which is called so today to distinguish it from the new one, which was founded later); and as the Templars, to whom this Fortress belonged, did not have sufficient power to resist such a large multitude, they handed it over to King Don Sancho himself so that he could take charge of it, as he did».

[Avilés, J.; 1780b; treatise IV, chapter IV, page 335] continues by telling us «The Abbot of Santa María de Fitero», near the river Pisuerga as he will indicate next, «of the Congregation of Cistercian, in the Bishopric of Palencia (which is a Monastery of St. Bernard, located on the river Pisuerga), named Don Raymond, and Friar Diego Velazquez, his subject Monk, who followed the Court, despite the difficulty of the enterprise, requested it from the King to defend it, which was granted, trusting in the virtue of the Abbot, and the strength of the Monk, who had previously been a great Knight in deeds of Arms, and very practiced in war».

[Avilés, J.; 1780b; treatise IV, chapter IV, page 336] continues «Seeing themselves in such an obligation, and that by themselves they could not fulfill it, they turned to Archbishop Don Juan (who was the fourth of Toledo) for help; and he, granting many indulgences in all his Archbishopric to those who, for themselves and for others, supplied the Place with provisions, in the same way as those who, unable to go due to old age or illness, helped with weapons, horses, and men; and having spread this news, so much help came to them, that when the Moors learned that the number of people exceeded twenty thousand men, they abandoned the conquest, returning to their homes: for this reason, the King ceded the Town of Calatrava to the Abbot of Fitero, and his successors, to defend it from the Moors from then on, confirmed later by King Alfonso IX, his son».

Design rationale

The hurt represents what is known as the Good Raft, a symbol of the town and its people, it is a circular cistern of 40 meters in diameter of Roman origin, and the Maltese cross is a symbol of its connection since 1188 to the Royal Monastery of Sijena of Hospitaller nuns of the Order Malta.

The heraldic colors Gules, Azure, Vert, Sable, and Purpure can be divided into two sets:

• the energetic colors Gules, Azure, and Vert, and
• the neutral colors Sable and Purpure.

Therefore, the Sable-Purpure combination is not the most vibrant.

I use both Sable and Purpure in this design because it incorporates all five colors and both metals, Or and Argent, representing different heraldic disciplines. Note that I have placed Purpure and Sable far apart, precisely due to the initial explanation.

The Alcantara Regiment executed nine successive cavalry charges to protect the infantry's retreat, nine charges until they broke the enemy lines, outnumbering them. The last charge was on foot because all their horses were dead or exhausted. These heroic riders of Alcantara had fulfilled their duty of protecting the wounded infantry in their retreat to El Batel, but the price was appalling: of 691 riders, only 67 survived, and three months were necessary to recover hundreds of corpses.

For this reason, in 2012, the Alcántara Regiment was collectively awarded the Grand Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Two lances behind the shield

Since 1987, the coat of arms of the cavalry regiments of the Spanish Army must carry two crossed lances accolade behind the shield. And indeed, this coat of arms of the Alcántara Cavalry Regiment has two lances behind the shield, but in my artistic heraldic interpretation, I did not paint them to avoid detracting from the prominence of the Laureate Cross.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in the 14^th century, is Great Britain's oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry. It symbolises honour and loyalty, and its members are chosen by the Sovereign in recognition of their exceptional public service. Its distinctive emblem, a dark blue garter bearing the motto «Honi soit qui mal y pense» ~ «Shame on him who thinks evil of it». Starting in 1376, the field sown with fleurs-de-lis was replaced by only three fleurs-de-lis. This change took place during the reign of Charles V of France (1338–1380, King of France from 1364 to 1380).

Edward III Plantagenet (1312–1377, King of England from 1327 to 1377) had incorporated the semé of fleurs-de-lis into his arms as a sign of his claim to the French throne, and Henry IV of England (1367–1413, King of England from 1399 to 1413) again changed the semé into three fleurs-de-lis in his own arms.

These three fleurs-de-lis remained in the royal arms of England until George II (1683–1760, King from 1727 to 1760).

They remained in the royal arms of the French kings until their prohibition during the so-called «Hundred Days», that is, from March 20, 1815, the date of Napoleon’s return to Paris from his exile in Elba, until June 28, 1815, the date of the Second Restoration of Louis XVIII as King of France, when they were reinstated. Finally, after the Revolution of 1830, Louis Philippe I of Orléans decreed their abolition by Order of February 10, 1831.

This banner is a recreation of the one appearing in the armorial [Edward IV of England; 1461; row 23, column 2], although in that armorial the banner seems to be associated with Louis IX of France, perhaps because of the prestige of the saintly King of France, whose arms bore a semé of fleurs-de-lis rather than three.

Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. In English heraldry, the term supporters is used in a general sense, whether the supporters are animals, inanimate objects, plants or human figures. There is no strict terminological distinction based on the nature of the supporting figures. In Castilian heraldic tradition, by contrast, a more precise terminology is employed. The term «soportes» is used when the supporters are animals, «sostenes» when they are objects (such as columns or weapons) or plants (such trees), and «tenantes» when the figures supporting the coat of arms are human in form. In addition, inanimate supporters are relatively common in Castilian heraldry, whereas they are much rarer in English heraldry. There is also a difference in blazoning practice in the case of columns. Design rationale

She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She studied Marine Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao (1991–1995), and the marine motifs reflect both her academic training and career. The dolphin on the shield refers to her Puerto Rican heritage, her birthplace in Fajardo, and her personal value of honor. At her request, the shield ends in a semi-circular arch, in keeping with Hispanic heraldic tradition. The three escallops symbolize her family and her compassion. She currently resides in Houston, Texas, which is why the owl in her crest holds a bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), the state flower of Texas since 1901. The owl represents her profession and her wisdom. A small gold heart on the chain pendant indicates her cadency as first daughter.

Saint Edward Crown, the fundamental piece used in the anointing ceremony of British monarchs, was reconstructed in 1661 after the Restoration. This crown is distinguished by its four depressed or downward-curving arches, three visible, which rise from a circular base decorated with four cross patty, three visible, alternating with four fleurs de lis, two visible. Like the Tudor, its arches, adorned with pearls, converge at the center to support an orb, a cross on a world. The crown's base is lined with ermine, and the cap or inner lining is traditionally represented in Purpure. It is the heaviest piece among the Crown Jewels and its use is reserved exclusively for the culminating moment of the coronation. The main visual difference between Saint Edward Crown and the Tudor Crown lies in their arches: Saint Edward Crown features depressed arches or downward curves, and its inner cap is typically represented in Purpure. Historical origin

The coat of arms of Jean-Philippe Sendat reflects his lineage, tradition, and family symbolism, as described below.

His family coat of arms dates back to 1667 and is associated with the former Barony of Sendat. This coat of arms includes lions quartered in the style of Castile and León, and, as a crest, a lion.

The 6 scallop shells, pilgrim's shells, represent the connection to the Camino de Santiago, as pilgrims were hosted in the family castle.

Jean-Philippe Sendat, as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, is granted the privilege of adorning his coat of arms with a Count Palatine crown.

Design ideas

The heraldic art often involves resolving design challenges while maintaining both aesthetic balance and adherence to tradition. The coat of arms illustrated here draws inspiration from the Dethick-Dethicke family arms of Derbyshire, though it features distinct differences. This design explores the placement of water-bougets, a medieval water vessel, in a 2+2 arrangement, with a fess vair.

One key consideration when arranging charges in heraldry is proportionality. In this case, the fess occupies 1/3 of the coat of arms's width and is positioned 1/3 of the height from the chief, rather than at the exact center, allowing the charges to balance harmoniously. The shape of the shield itself also plays a role: rounded shields can accommodate a 2+2 arrangement more comfortably than shields with a pointed base, which are better suited to 2+1 arrangements, this is de case of Dethick's arms.

Another challenge in heraldic design is asymmetry. To address the natural curves of the shield, the water-bougets may vary slightly in size or placement. This intentional asymmetry can help create a visually appealing composition that respects both tradition and the unique constraints of each design, because, heraldry is not only about rules but also about creativity.

Water-bouget

In German, they are called «Wasserschlauch» in English «water-bougets» or «oges», and in French «bouses» or «chantepleures».

There is no specific heraldic term for them in Castilian. Based on «chantepleures», one could use «cantimploras», which are metallic or at least rigid. On the other hand, «oges» could translate as «odres», as they are typically made of leather as in this case. Additionally, since «water-bouget» are designed as a pair to be carried by a donkey or other animal, I have decided to use «par de odres» to convey the idea of one on each side of the animal.

In English, when there is a single charge, that is, a pair of water vessels, it is written in singular as «water-bouget», as can be seen in [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; figure 551]. [Friar, S.; 1987; page 68] defines «bouget» as «...a stylized representation of a yoke supporting two leather waterbags».

Jessed means with jesses, the thongs by which bells are fastened to the legs of a falcon.

The falcon use to be belled and jessed, with bells and leather strips on the legs. The attributes used to be citted in the blazon when its tincture is different that the main element to which it belongs. In this case, its leather strips are Or, the same tincture than the falcon Or, but I decided to blazoned it «a falcon displayed and jessed Or» to denote jessed but not belled.

He was the second son of King Henry III of England, and took part in the Ninth Crusade, hence the epithet «Cross on the back».

In 1253 he was appointed Earl of Chester, holding dominion, among others, over the county of Cheshire, but the following year Pope Innocent IV granted him the crown of Sicily, so he ceded his earldom to his elder brother Edward I of England, however, he never came to occupy the throne of Sicily.

The label is an honourable ordinary and also «a kind of mark of cadency, and the most noble of all those used to differentiate the Arms of the younger sons of a House» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248] and it can likewise be used by the eldest son while his father's arms are still in use, ceasing to bear the label when he inherits his father’s coat. When both the eldest and the second son bear a label, the latter’s label then has more points or is charged with figures to distinguish it.

The label is constructed with «a fillet, which is one-ninth of the width of the chief, with three pendants in the form of carpentry wedges or ill-shaped triangles, joined to it without any line of separation, falling twice as far as the fillet is wide, two placed at the ends and one in the middle, its usual position being in the centre of the chief’s length, without reaching the edges of the shield» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 248].

Nogueira Gonçalves, or «Armaria Portuguesa» that describes it in Portuguese «De azul, cinco flores de lis de oiro. T.: ... o grito Nostre Dame de Puy» and also in French «D'azur à cinq fleurs-de-lis d'or. C.: ... le cri, Nostre Dame de Puy, en lettres d'or». In this version, the text of the cry «:Notra:Dama:Dallpoy:» is based on a d’Alpoim's armorial stone and represents a Portuguese evolution of the original French cry «Notre Dame du Puy», which is the name of the Cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay, France.
