This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. The arms are traditionally associated with the Lobo family of Alvito and are documented in Castilian and Portuguese heraldic and genealogical sources. These arms were equally used by other members of the House of Alvito, such as Ruy Dias Lobo and his descendants. I have emblazoned this coat of arms at the request of Fernando Durán Cabral de Mello d’Alpoim, as he counts the Lobo lineage of Alvito among his ancestors. The coat of arms of Jean-Christophe Loubet del Bayle emblazoned by me. This wolf, being depicted in gules, might have been blazoned as «flayed». In this regard, [Fox-Davies, A. C.; 1909; page 187] writes: «A curious term, of the use of which I know only one example, is fleshed or flayed. This, as doubtless will be readily surmised, means that the skin is removed, leaving the flesh gules». Accordingly, it might have been described as «a wolf passant flayed» ~ «un lobo pasante escorchado». [Royal Spanish Academy; 2014] defines the heraldic expression «lobo escorchado» as «lobo de color de gules, que es el que se da a este animal cuando se representa como si estuviera desollado». This tartan has more black and yellow because these are the color Sable-black and metal Or-yellow of my coat of arms. Also, it has the other two colors Gules-red and Azure-blue, and one metal Argent-grey of my crest.
Over the black background, its main visual structure is a thin red line, a thick yellow line, and a thin red line because of the flag of Spain.
It is mostly symmetrical tartan because I am a heraldic artist and I love the symmetry and geometry. But there is a bit of asymmetry, two thin lines grey and blue, to break the uniformity.
It is based in the 5 first terms (1, 2, 3, 5, 8) of the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...). This sequence is intimately connected with the golden ratio, 1.61803... that I use frequently in my designs. But for the thread count, I multiple the Fibonacci sequence by 6 to obtain more than 5 inches, then I use the numbers 6=(1x6), 12=(2x6), 18=(3x6), 30=(5x6), and 48=(8x6).
