Regarding the external ornaments, I note that the shield is surmounted by a count’s coronet, while a marquis’s coronet appears above the helm. This arrangement is consistent with Italian heraldic practice, in which the coronet above the shield denotes the personal title of the bearer, in this case a count, whereas the one above the helm may represent the higher or historical rank of the family, in this case Marquis Prato di Arnesano, although this was the situation at the time the arms were designed, the bearer now holds that marquisate.

Pietragavina is the modern consolidated form and the current toponym; the older form is Pietra Gavina, written as two words, which we use in historical expressions such as Lords of Pietra Gavina. Pietragavina is a locality within the municipality of Varzi, in the province of Pavia, region of Lombardy.

This is the traditional coat of arms of the Royal Abahinda Clan of the Ankore Kingdom (1478), Uganda, renewed by them under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and emblazoned by me. The motto over the coat of arms, «Oruganda Rw'Abahinda», means "Clan of Abahinda", and the motto below, «Abazira Nkyende», states that their totemic animal is the monkey. This coat of arms was renewed by the Clan under the supervision of Crowned Prince Tugume Salim, and I have had the honour of refining and rendering its design. Harmonising the European rules of heraldry with African expressiveness is no easy task, yet it can yield great results.
