Nine of my interpretations of the coat of arms of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, together with three constructive diagrams illustrating my execution of this coat of arms, were documented, edited, and printed in book form. Two unique copies were hand-bound in leather, with the cover engraved with this coat of arms. One of them was delivered to the Household of His Majesty, and I received a letter conveying His Majesty the King’s gratitude for my heraldic interpretation of his coat of arms based on the golden ratio.

The illustration brings together two different aspects. On the one hand, the photograph captures the moment in which I explain the coat of arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, during one of my heraldic art exhibitions, pointing directly to its components while the audience observes. On the other hand, it shows the coat of arms of Charles V as painted by me. All the works visible in the image have been created by me. In this exhibition, I combined the presentation of my coats of arms with a live music concert featuring works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Komitas, and Carlos Gardel.

This augmentation of the grant G0042 has been published in the Government Gazette of Malta, Volume 2, No. 20,240, dated 14^th February 2023, on pages 1265–1266, in both Maltese and English. Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

Coat of arms of the Lord of South Clifton. The image combines a photograph of a drawing of a tyger rampant with the final version of his coat of arms, both created by me. From my original hand-drawn sketch to its final heraldic embodiment, this tyger has lost the stripes on its back because the heraldic tyger should not have them, unlike a natural tiger. The image also shows how the mane evolved from the original hand-drawn sketch to the final heraldic version, ensuring the tyger's mane is distinctly different from a lion's.

There are identification processes that take years or months, and others in which, almost immediately, the elements fall into place. In this specific case, the identification was surprisingly rapid, largely thanks to the exceptional quality of the photographic material.

When Dr. Germán Corcho Sánchez consulted me about the small coats of arms that appear repeatedly on the image of the Virgin of the Sagrario in the Cathedral of Plasencia, a work from the second half of the thirteenth century, covered with gilded silver, the visual documentation he provided proved decisive. His photographs, of extraordinary sharpness and detail, made it possible to clearly observe shields barely a centimetre and a half wide, punched and retouched with repoussé engraving tools.

Two of the shields raised no doubts for anyone in Plasencia: the castle of Castile and the lion of León. The third had been attributed either to Plasencia or to Segovia, the latter, I understand, because the shield may appear to depict the arches of an aqueduct. And it was this one, the third, about which Dr. Germán Corcho Sánchez was asking me.

My proposal was to interpret it as a vair fur, and in this case, that of the Monroy vair, whose ancestral seat is located in the municipality of Monroy.

My reasoning was that the arms of Castile functioned as the common element linking the quartered arms of Castile and León and the quartered arms of Castile and the Monroy vair, hence the sequence visible in the photographs: vair, castle, lion, vair, Castile, León,... as shown in the following visual composition, in which I combine the arms of Castile and León and those of the Monroy lineage with the excellent photographs by Dr. Germán Corcho Sánchez of the Virgin of the Sagrario of Plasencia.

On the other hand, the influence of the Monroy in Plasencia was such that the presence of their coat of arms on the Virgin’s mantle is coherent and perfectly contextualisable within medieval Plasencia. But sometimes I think that the speed with which the pieces fell into place may not be due solely to that, but rather to the fact that, as a child, from a pastureland near the Tagus, the silhouette of the castle of Belvís de Monroy formed a habitual part of my horizon.
