Arms of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, emblazoned by me. The decision to depict both Pillars of Hercules in Argent arises from a strictly technical and artistic process. My objective was to paint the commander’s badge of the Imperial Hispanic Order of Charles V, a piece that is entirely made of Argent. Working directly on a fully Argent surface made the visual reading of the whole difficult, so I decided, as a preliminary step, to paint the coat of arms in its proper tinctures and, once the chromatic composition was resolved, to convert it into Argent. The commander’s badge of this order is based on its coat of arms and emblem as interpreted and painted by the heraldist and heraldic artist Fernando Martínez Larrañaga. In that interpretation, Fernando represented the Pillars of Hercules entirely in Argent. For the sake of coherence with this model, which is the direct reference for the badge, I followed the same solution and painted the pillars in Argent. I have also painted this same coat of arms with the pillars having Argent shafts and Or bases and capitals.

Design rationale

Per pale Vert and Azure represents the fields of Galicia facing the sea, with its «horreo» ~ granary and the oak leaves as symbols of Galician nature and of the values of strength and nobility of the bearer. The escallop symbolises the Holy Catholic Faith and traditional and conservative values. The sword represents Justice and the bearer’s studies in Law, as well as strength and worth. The bearer’s motto, «Nolite conformari huic saeculo» ~ «Be not conformed to this world», taken from the Epistle of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, expresses his personal view of life. The falcon that surmounts the helm as a crest represents sharpness and vigilance.

G0076, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta's grant for the arms of Claes Zangenberg's arms, whose full achievement has been emblazoned by me for such grant. This full achievement includes a crown of Baron, it is essential to emphasize that the inclusion of these ornaments does not constitute legal recognition of titles of nobility by the Republic of Malta; rather, it reflects the Office's mandate to preserve and document the cultural and heraldic heritage of the petitioners. The current Chief Herald of Arms of Malta has clarified in various interviews and lectures that, as the Constitution of Malta has not recognized titles of nobility since 1975, the legal framework allowing the Republic of Malta to register a coat of arms featuring coronets is to treat it as historical and cultural evidence of a lineage. This approach is detailed in the book [Gauci, C. A.; 2023; 145], «The Way Forward»: «Thus, although the State recognizes the coat of arms of an individual as granted/registered by the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, this does not mean that the Chief Herald or indeed the Republic of Malta are also automatically recognizing any title of nobility used by the individual in question. The Arms are simply the reflection, verbal and pictorial of any honours mentioned in the Letters Patent or Document of Registration». It is under this premise of cultural heritage that the Office of the Chief Herald is integrated into Heritage Malta, the Maltese national agency for museums and the conservation of cultural heritage, established by the Cultural Heritage Act enacted in 2002. Annulet

The circular crown when it is large and in the middle of the shield [Cadenas y Vicent, V. de; 1975] is called an annulet. [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 296 and 297] calls it annulet or small annulet depending on its size, if it is large an annulet and if it is small a small annulet. In English and French heraldry it is called «cyclamor» and hence the expression «cyclamor annulet» can also be found.

This annulet is my aesthetic contribution to this imaginary coat of arms as it is normally not represented with this annulet.

Bordure and Orle

In other interpretations the words «non est» go on a bordure or on an orle, the latter being the case blazoned, for example, [Husenbeth, F. C.; 1882; 2^nd appendix] in the following way: «Gules, an orle and pall Argent, conjoined and surmounted of four plates, occupying the dexter and sinister chief and the base and fess points respectively; the first inscribed Pater, the second Filius, and the third Spiritus Sanctus, the centre Deus; the connecting portions of the orle between them having the words non est, and those of the pall est».

Canting arms of Jan Bobor, Slovakia, emblazoned under his directions. In heraldry, the word embattled is usually enough, and even more precise terms such as Ghibelline or swallow-tail crenellations already convey a distinctive image. Yet, in this case, what matters most is not the general heraldic convention, but the particular wish of the armiger. For him, the form of the crenellations is essential because it alludes directly to a specific historical castle: Zvolen Castle in central Slovakia, with its alternating swallow-tails and arched voids. To reflect that connection faithfully, the blazon could indeed be refined to read «a chief embattled of Ghibelline crenellations», or even more precisely, «…of alternating swallow-tails and arched voids».

The way to elaborate a label can be found in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 248] who writes that «it is made of a fillet, which is the ninth part of the latitude of the Chief with three points in the form of a Carpenter's wedge, or of badly formed triangles, which united to it without separation of lines, fall twice as much, as the fillet is wide, the two being placed at its ends, and one in its middle, its ordinary situation being in the middle of the length of the Chief itself, without reaching the edges of the Shield».

In [Avilés, J.; 1780a; pages 248 and 249] it is said that «the simple Label is always of three points», as is the case at hand, «but having 4, 5, or 6, which is the greatest number found, it is necessary to specify it», although in [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 114] he seems to consider that the maximum is five as he writes «Points, it is said of three, four and up to five points of the Labels».

Design rationale

This coat of arms is a distillation of personal heritage and regional identity. The lion passant and the tinctures Gules and Argent are inspired by the Nolan arms; he is married to Dymphna, née Nolan. The oak leaves on the mural crown are derived from the Durkan arms. The Gules represents the ancient bloodline of the Durkan family in this part of Connacht. The colours Gules and Vert reflect the colours of County Mayo, where he was born. Argent, present in both the Durkan and Nolan arms, also evokes the swans on the lakes near the family homestead in County Mayo. The Celtic cross refers to Mayo Abbey, a nearby 7^th-century monastic site traditionally linked to St. Colmán, close to Rathnacreeva. The circular stone structure of the mural crown represents Rathnacreeva, a ringfort, he was born in County Mayo to Bob Durkan and Bernie Flynn of Rathnacreeva. They are 5 brothers, the mural crown bears 5 oak leaves joined at their base through the stones of the crown, symbolising the 5 brothers and their connection. The mural crown symbolises civic authority and recalls both Dublin Castle, the former headquarters of An Garda Síochána, where the armiger served as a Garda, and also the dry-stone walls of the west of Ireland. The motto «Protect with Honour and Integrity» encapsulates the ideas of governance, duty, and moral authority.

Arms of the Kingdom of Spain. This image combines three photographs of this coat of arms on the façade of the Ministry of Defence building on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, just a few metres from my office, together with my own artistic interpretation of the same arms. In the version on the façade of the Ministry of Defence, the crowns above the columns do not touch the columns, which I believe is the correct way to depict them, although the central crown does appear to rest upon the shield of Spain. There are more interpretations that place the crowns resting on the columns than those that do not, and I photographed this particular version from the Ministry of Defence because it is especially relevant due to its size and institutional significance. On the arrangement of the crowns: a) Royal Decree 1511/1977, of 21 January, enacted during the so-called Transition and approving the Regulations on Flags and Standards, Guidons, Insignia and Distinctive Signs, states: «Rule No. 2. Coat of Arms of Spain… Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one…». b) The subsequent Law 33/1981, of 5 October, regulating the current coat of arms of Spain, likewise states: «…Accompanied by two columns Argent, with base and capital Or, set upon waves Azure or blue and Argent», «superado» «by an imperial crown on the dexter one and by a royal crown on the sinister one». c) The term «superado» in the heraldic dictionaries in which it appears refers, as a synonym, to «surmontado». d) The definitions of «surmontado» include: «a charge which, at its upper part, has another above it but without touching it», «also said of superado», and «a figure that bears another above it, but without touching it». In light of a), b), c) and d), the two crowns should therefore be painted not touching the columns. However, in the illustrative drawing contained in Royal Decree 1511/1977 the crowns do touch the columns, contradicting its own wording, although in heraldry, when in doubt, the written blazon always prevails; and in most official representations the crowns do indeed touch the columns. Nevertheless, this personal interpretation of both the coat of arms of Spain and of the proper way to write its blazon, where the lateral crowns do not touch the columns, and then I decide that, following the same criterion, the central crown should not touch the shield either, so the result differs from the official version.

In Castilian heraldic tradition, the «adiestrado» ~ «tierce» used in this coat of arms and its symmetrical «siniestrado» ~ «tierce sinister» are «irregular divisions of the field by one line» ~ «particiones irregulares». That is why I use «tierce» and «tierce sinister» in English. There is another possibility, which is to call the «adiestrado» ~ «pale in dexter flank» and the «siniestrado» ~ «pale in sinister flank», thus ceasing to be a type of «divisions of the field» ~ «particiones» and becoming «ordinaries» ~ «piezas fundamentales». This has implications, as the rule of tinctures would apply if it were considered a «pale» ~ «palo». In any case, I will write the blazon in both ways. Design rationale

These are canting arms because her surname is «Peregrina» ~ «pilgrim», and her coat of arms depicts the arm of a pilgrim, as she is one herself, with her staff and her gourd for carrying water, advancing towards the dexter, in order to reach the destination of her three most important life pilgrimages: Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Jerusalem. Following [Petra Sancta, S.; 1634; pages 417–418], in seventeenth-century academic emblematics the staff symbolizes the road understood as an intellectual journey, proper to a traveller who appears humble yet is rich in knowledge, while the gourd, which may seem empty, represents the wisdom preserved within it and from which learning ultimately emerges.

Emblem interpreted as follows: oval in shape and more rounded than the original; the field illuminated in Azure; its charges illuminated in Gules, Vert, Argent, and Or, and outlined in Sable; the emerald represented by an enameled area Vert; and the whole emblem has a parchment-like finish.

The archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are angels; therefore, I classify this emblem both under the category archangel and under angel, while Saint Michael himself is represented in it as a male figure.

Saint Michael the Archangel, in this representation, bears a shield which, at first, I blazon as the current coat of arms of Navarre, chains of gold, the original arms of Navarre being as blazoned in the armorial [Urfé; 15^th century; folio 142]: «Gules, a carbuncle Or pommelly, illuminated Vert in the centre in the manner of an emerald». This description does not suggest the presence of chains, but rather the rays of a carbuncle, nor an actual emerald, since what corresponds to the central umbo from which the rays of the carbuncle emerge is enameled Vert.

Due to my way of painting the arms of Navarre in profile, it stands halfway between a carbuncle and chains, with the outer links round like those of a chain, the central ones long like the rays of a carbuncle, and in the centre I have not drawn an emerald, but an enameled area Vert «in the manner of an emerald».
