The English term «debruised» is written in Castilian as «resaltado»; I usually write it as «debruised by» ~ «resaltado de», where the charge below is debruised by the one above. It is analogous to «charged by» ~ «cargado de», except that the upper charge projects beyond the surface of the lower one; in this case, parts of the stag project beyond the surface of the sun and the clouds. In English, «stag» corresponds to the Castilian «ciervo», although «deer» is occasionally found instead. When a stag's antlers are of a different tincture from its body, the English term is «attired»; in Castilian I prefer «ramado» to «arcornado». When the animal issues from the wreath, rather than standing upon it, I write «demi» in English and «saliente» in Castilian; «demi» is reminiscent of the Castilian prefix «semi». When the animal is «demi», the animal's default attitude is «rampant» ~ «rampante» unless otherwise specified.

Design rationale

Promet Restoration is company devoted to the preservation and restoration of fine pianos, antique furniture, and historic wooden artefacts, prometrestoration.com. Founded in San Francisco in 1989 by Tynis Promet, and later established in Seattle, the company continues a family tradition that began in 1983 at the National Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, under the mentorship of Ülo Ots, son of the renowned opera singer Georg Ots. Over the decades, Promet Restoration has restored more than four hundred Steinway pianos and countless heirloom pieces, upholding the mission «To preserve the heirlooms for generations to come». The arms of the company derive from those of the Promet family, simplified and adapted for corporate use. They retain the Estonian heraldic inspiration and the distinctive dovetailed base, a reference to the woodworking joint symbolising precision, craftsmanship, and enduring quality, the very principles upon which the company was founded. The family motto «Per Aspera ad Astra» gives way here to the corporate motto «Quality & Integrity · Est. 1989», expressing the firm’s professional ethos and artistic dedication.

Design rationale

Sister Esperanza's arms symbolizes 2 essential aspects of her life. The central figure is Our Lady of Mercy, bearing the arms of the Order of Mercy upon her breast, in remembrance of Sister Esperanza's membership of the Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz. The broken chain she holds recalls the original Mercedarian mission of the redemption of captives and, by extension, the liberating vocation and service to those most in need that, as a Mercedarian, characterized Sister Esperanza's life. The 2 great palm branches protecting the Virgin also evoke the port of San Blas and the Mexican roots that accompanied Esperanza throughout her long missionary life in Asia. 2 symbolic arrangements of the palms were tried: pilewise beneath the Virgin, perhaps a somewhat conventional composition; and the arrangement chosen, pile reversed, protecting and framing the Virgin.
