This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast that was painted in the Freiherren diploma that was issued in 1790 (source: «Freiherren-Diploma Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast 1790, Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, königlich-bayerisches Heroldsamt, Bd. 20-1 nr. 26»). This coat of arms has been emblazoned by me because the family needed a modern version that can be used digitally. It should be borne in mind that in heraldry there is no fixed or inherent symbolic meaning attached to charges; any symbolic value, where it exists, derives from the intention of the original bearer or the creator of the arms. Nevertheless, heraldic tradition has preserved historical explanations for the origin of certain charges. In this respect, [Wade, W. C.; 1898; pages 115-116] notes that the lady’s sleeve, of very ancient form, entered heraldry through the custom of knights attending tournaments wearing their ladies’ sleeves as «gages d’amour», and that, in adopting this charge, the knight could symbolically declare: «por el honor de mi dama».

This is the coat of arms of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast that was painted in the Freiherren diploma that was issued in 1790. I have written the text of the blazon for this coat of arms in English and in Castilian in a structured way, to highlight the parallelism between both forms.

Coat of arms of the Infante Manuel of Castile, 1234–1283, 7^th son of the King Ferdinand III of Castile, 1199-1252, and the Queen Beatrice of Swabia, 1205–1235. They are canting arms of «Manuel» ~ «manu–el» ~ «mano–ala» ~ «hand–wing». For this reason, I describe it as a hand with a wing and not as a wing with a hand. Another theory suggests that, since his maternal grandmother was Irene Ángelo, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos, the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters derive from this lineage. However, this Byzantine emperor did not have a coat of arms in the Western heraldic sense, let alone one featuring an angel's wing wielding a sword. A synthetic theory could be proposed, combining the concept of canting arms with angelic symbolism, referencing his descent from the emperors of Byzantium, something that was undoubtedly of great importance to him. There are explanations about this in [Menéndez Pidal de Navascués, F.; 1982, pages 98-100]. And what's more important, they are not a quartering by inheritance; quarters 2^nd and 3^rd are inherited, but quarters 1^st and 4^th are conceptually invented, which opens up the creative field.
