Design rationale

These arms were created for Christopher Edwards from New South Wales, Australia, drawing elements from the coat of arms of the Irish Richard Edwards of Old Court (Ess.). The lower field inherits the vert and the stag or armed argent from the ancestral lineage, which in this version evolves into a stag's massacre or. The three eagles in the chief of the original Edwards arms transform into two ravens representing his German and Danish mother, also his favourite birds. The ravens flank the acorn, a symbol of growth and prosperity. The stag's massacre in base references the Edwards lineage and represents defence and noble blood. The crest features comedy and tragedy masks conjoined, reflecting the inseparable duality of life. The mantling displays bunches of grapes derived from Christopher's nickname «Grapes», symbolizing a personal identity woven throughout the coat of arms; these same bunches later serve as the base for the cat supporters, argent and sable, embodying balance through contrast. Green, Christopher's favourite colour and the colour of his eyes, also appears in the ancestral Edwards arms; its presence runs throughout the design as a tribute to his time in the military. The motto «Si non rides, flebis» ~ «If you do not laugh, you will cry» reflects a philosophy of choosing joy over sorrow.

Hufflepuff at Hogwarts

Party per pale: 1 Or, a badger rampant Sable; 2 Sable, a badger rampant, regardant Or.

Party per pale: 1 Or, a badger rampant Sable; 2 Sable, a badger rampant, regardant Or.

Escudo partido: 1o de oro, un tejón rampante de sable; 2o de sable, un tejón rampante, contornado de oro.

Imaginary arms of the student House Hufflepuff at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, made with the following differential characteristics compared to other representations: the mouth of the coat of arms is rounded; the shield is party per pale; the field and the badgers are enameled in flat tinctures of Sable and Or; the badgers, facing Dexter and Sinister, are outlined by the field; and the whole is finished with a raised-stroke effect.

This imaginary coat of arms of the Hufflepuff House at Hogwarts has been interpreted without taking much into account other of the multiple realizations that have been produced and disseminated.

Hufflepuff House with 2 badgers

Party per pale: 1 Or, a badger rampant Sable; 2 Sable, a badger rampant, regardant Or.

You might belong in Hufflepuff where they are just and loyal. In Hufflepuff they are very patient and unafraid of hard work.

Party per pale: 1 Or, a badger rampant Sable; 2 Sable, a badger rampant, regardant Or.

Escudo partido: 1o de oro, un tejón rampante de sable; 2o de sable, un tejón rampante, contornado de oro.

Imaginary arms of Hufflepuff realized in the following way: the mouth of the coat of arms is rounded; the field is illuminated and has a marble finish; and the badgers, each facing one side, are illuminated, outlined by the field, and finished with a hammered metal effect.

The initial quote, next to the Hufflepuff coat of arms, is taken from [Rowling, J. K.; 1997] and corresponds to «You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, And unafraid of toil».

When blazoning the 2nd badger, it must be taken into account that its head is regardant, which is what «is said of animals, or their heads, turned toward the sinister side of the shield» [Avilés, J.; 1725a; page 55] and [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 61].

Kimon Andreou, his gentilitian coat of arms and his motto in Greek

Kimon Andreou edits, from November 2008 to July 2015, his interesting idtg.org on heraldry, genealogy, history and other related topics.

The name and domain of this blog idtg.org are the acronyms of Kimon Andreou's own Greek motto which says:

  • «Ischys Dia Tis Gnoseos»,
  • in Greek «ΙΣΧΥΣ ΔΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΓΝΩΣΕΩΣ»,
  • which could be translated into Castilian as «el poder del conocimiento».

This motto has led him to seek knowledge since he was young and he offers it to us with his enjoyable posts about biographies, books on heraldry, coats of arms that generate controversy, on how to design your own coat of arms (gentilitian), heraldic artists, nobility, orders of chivalry and merit, orthodox orders and many other topics that I recommend.

Party per fess: 1 Azure, a Athenian owl Argent, contourné, in chief; 2 Argent, an oak Azure, eradicated, in base; overall a saltire counterchanged.

Escudo cortado: 1o de azur, una lechuza al estilo ateniense, contornada de plata, en jefe; 2o de plata, un roble de azur, arrancado, en punta; brochante sobre el todo un sotuer del uno al otro.

Existing coat of arms which I have interpreted in the following way: the semicircular (round) base; the fields enameled in Azur color and Argent metal flat; the saltire reduced to 2/3 of its traditional width, that is, to 2/9 of the width of the shield, to leave more space for the figures, but without becoming a flanque of 1/9 of the width of the shield; the figures illuminated in Argent and Azure and outlined in the field; and with a watercolor finish.

Eradicated ~ Arrancado

For the tree, in this case an oak with its acorns and sinuous-edged leaves, whose roots are visible, I use the term arrancado following [Avilés, J.; 1780a; page 28 and figure 12] when blazoning Vernade in France which says that «trae de gules, y un Árbol arrancado de oro, acostado de dos Estrellas de lo mismo».

In English, the equivalent term for arrancado is «eradicated», from the French «arraché».
